  1. I was thinking Suzuki as well. Which opens up the Phillies as a possibility. Also allows the Cubs to take on a higher contract back. I would be shocked if Taillon is used in a trade. Gives them even less pitching and makes no sense. But is the offense better with Bregman for Suzuki? No! So they better improve the staff.
  2. Are they good posts? 🤷
  3. If the Cubs could do a 1 for 1 Hoerner for Schmidt I would be all in on it. Cubs are also saving around $7M on the trade. Which they may need to do.
  4. I think the Cubs would have to add to Nico for Schmidt. But I do like that idea. .
  5. Maybe if they moved Bohm, like they appear to want to do. 🤷
  6. But they don’t want to add payroll and Cubs can’t. And he isn’t a fit for either Kirby or Gilbert. Cubs would have to add a high end prospect.
  7. If the Cubs got Gil or Schmidt there wouldn’t be a prospect coming from the Yankees. I don’t mind Nico for Schmidt, however. I don’t want to lose Nico but a team with Bregman in the line up and Schmidt in the rotation is better than Nico and Rea.
  8. How often is a guy in his last year traded where the team taking him in a trade already has an extension worked out for him? I would like that to be the case as well, but it isn’t reality.
  9. The only reason I say 2 is close is because they can do that and still then sign Tucker after the year. And 2 would give them the best team this year. That said, getting Tucker, long term now, is still most appealing to me.
  10. There are 3 outcomes I can be ok with for the rest of the off season. 1. sign Bregman and be under then LT without trading Hoeener 2. Sign a bench bat (Cahna) and trade Assad and Cassie for Cease or King(Any pitcher who slots ahead of Tailon) 3. use the money saved to sign Tucker to an extension now. Sign Cahna. if all were available and Jed had to choose one direction, which would be the choice? I would choose 3. 2 is a close second. I would rather lock up Tucker now, worry about adding a pitcher at the trade deadline. My least favorite choice is trading for Bregman. But I like these 3 better than signing Bregman and trading Hoerner, or only signing Cahna (or no one) and keeping $30M for potential trades at the deadline.
  11. I, too am on the fence with Bregman. What would put me clear on the side of not doing it is if doing it, they have to trade Nico. If that is the case, I would rather sign a solid bench bad and save money for the deadline or to sign an extension for Tucker and/or PCA.
  12. No, Pecota still over 90. Fangraphs has them at 84.
  13. Couldn’t have said it better myself. I think they can use the money better, but then the fan side of me gets excited for this season. If I trusted they would use the money for either a trade for Cease or someone like that, or if they really were able to sign Tucker to an extension and start it this year, so they extension takes up most of the money, IMO,’that would be better use. But I am not sure they can accomplish either of those things.
  14. I would think the only way that would happen is if they traded a bat for a pitcher. Kind of like the Lester for Cespedes deal back in 2014. Either Suzuki, Happ or Hoerner would have to be moved for a pitcher of equal salary. So most likely one of the corner outfielders would be moved and Shaw or another young guy would fill the spot in the line up.
  15. Isn’t that rhe same with any higher end contract. What if Tucker is signed to a long term contract and at 31 he slips significantly? Aren’t the Cubs on the hook for several years of a bad contract? Bregman had a bad first half, but was very good in the seasons half. I think he will be fine.
  16. I like this. I think if they can get Bregman and still be far enough under the LT line they need to do it and worry about what happens in ‘26 aftee this year. The issue is can they stay under? As you said, they can always dump salary next year if he stays. They have plenty of guys they can move. And he may not stay. So why worry about that now?
  17. Would the cost of either Cease or King go down if they took Cronenworth too? He would be someone who could play all over the infield. With him the Cubs would still be well under the LT line. He also makes moving Nico next year easier because he would just then play 2nd. If Assad/Cassie/ Canario and a lower end 4th piece could get that done, would that be worth it?
  18. I am sure he is working every angle. And, TBH, if Peller is reasonable, I would rather a trade for Cease. Gives them a lot of money, still, if they need to do anything else. The problem is you can’t make a team trade with you if they don’t like the return.
  19. The Tucker extension is an interesting twist. Yes, if they did it to include this year his salary for LT purposes that woukd be over $30M. But that would lower his LT implications the entire contract, by a little. That would be interesting. Maybe even a PCA extension. Guess there are ways to use the money.
  20. Very possible. And the deal, on it’s own, is a good move by Jed. Why pay $10M+ for Robertson when you can get another guy for much less that you like.
  21. Yep, and then he could be signed at league minimum by someone and that would have come off the Dodgers $4.5M. I think claiming a guy released goes by order of worse record to best. So Cubs may not have been able to get him. Good move my Jed, IMO.
  22. Actually I agree with you in this. I am just saying if it doesn’t pan out it sucks. I don’t think Hoyer messed this up, at all. He has put the Cubs in a good spot for adding a bigger piece by doing what he did. If it ends up in Ricketts pocket I completely agree this is all on Ricketts. Jed is allowing the Cubs some flexibility here. Besides Bregman, maybe the Padres come to their senses on what they want for Cease. He can still do that. Maybe the Cubs take Crononworth too? They can fit those two in. Honestly there are a lot of options. Castillo, Lopez, and any other higher priced pitcher on a team looking to save money may be available. If they don’t get Bregman they have the ability to take advantage of any situation that may come, provided this was not all done so Tom can save money.
  23. I not sure he will be signed by the Cubs. But I am sure Hoyer has done more than just made a one year offer to him and is, in fact, aggressively going after him. Maybe they won’t need to trade Nico. Maybe they defer some money and while the deal looks like 4/$116 because of deferred money the Cubs only show $23M towards the LT payroll. 🤷 Seems every move Jed makes he is banking money. Hopefully to spend elsewhere. And right now, elsewhere is Bregman.
