This team has mentally drained me today. And Colin Rea going tomorrow doesn't inspire confidence.

I feel like the whole game changed on that Yelich AB and him not getting one of those three borderline calls. Not trying to blame the umps but it has been wildly inconsistent today

Seems like I say this after every Jameson Taillon start, today Boyd gets it "It's okay he gave up 4 runs and blew the lead, he showed grit by hanging in there and getting us through 6"

So Bubic is injured for the rest of the year, the Royals also extended Lugo and Clase under investigation.. can't help but thinking that the price tag on the remaining guys has gone up significantly. Way too many buyers and not enough sellers..

That's fair. This is just a gut feeling more than anything else, but I think his best days are in front of him. Whether it's a different delivery or arm angle, or even learning a new pitch.. It's hard not to watch guys like Palencia and PCA take such massive steps forward this year, and think that a guy like Assad wasn't primed to do the same thing if not for his injuries. Also agree that the Cubs absolutely have to find a TORP this deadline. Anything less than a major trade would be malpractice.

What makes Taillon better? Assad has a higher average WAR, ERA, ERA+, and a slightly better FIP in their Cubs careers. Taillon is the definition of average, and years like this, that is even being generous. I also think Assad has way more upside as a 27 year old. I don't want Assad pitching a game 3 either, but I'd much rather see him throw some meaningful playoff innings than Taillon or Rea.

But we've been saying that for 3 years with him. I agree that some regression might be on the surface.. but I also think there is a real chance that this is just who he is. Someone who minimizes damage because he keeps the ball in the park at a (usually) above average level.

Assad is criminally underrated by the board.. every year he's been here he's had an ERA under 4, outpacing his FIP by a decent amount every year. This is also the best defense he'll get to play in front of. Now, is he ready to handle a starter's workload after such a long layaway. Probably not, but that's a different question. He's a good player. He's not only better than Rea, he's better than Taillon
