  1. Yes. The value his bat adds is being lost by his defense. That’s why he’s a 1 fWAR player. Being a DH, he doesn’t lose the value he’d lose by playing the field. I don’t know if he won a GG or not, but this year at 1B he was -6 DRS and -13 OAA.
  2. I would give up a top 10 prospect if Vlad is going to DH. If you tell me we also sign Ohtani and we can get Vlad, but he has to play 1B, then I would find it hard to give up a top 10 prospect for a 1 fWAR first baseman. Agree on the bat… it’s awesome.
  3. Take the name off the back of his jersey, and Vladdy isn’t all that appealing. He’s also approaching DH only territory as he’s an awful first baseman. Would I want him in a trade? Yes. Would I give up any prospect in our top 10 for him? Probably not. Bichette > Vlad all day everyday.
  4. Heyman saying Padres want 2 top 100 prospects for Soto. Side note: These comments never make sense to me. That theoretically could mean the #92 and #93 prospect while somebody else could offer the #26 and #39 prospect. Every org is going to have their own rankings anyways. Do the Padres want near ready bats? Near ready arms? Best player available regardless of how far away they are from the bigs? So again, 2 top 100 prospects tells me nothing… or tells me Heyman doesn’t know anything.
  5. I don’t know his arm strength at 3rd since obviously there’s no data on him throwing from there, but plenty of notable guys have relatively weak arms from 3B. I’m sure he would be fine there. I mean Ke’Bryan Hayes only averages 81 mph at 3rd and he’s elite defensively. Bichette had a max of 91 MPH from SS this year, so he obviously has enough juice to let it go a bit if he needs to. It’s not good by any means, but I wouldn’t be too worried about it.
  6. Morel and PCA probably get it done… or very close to it. That also depends on what the Blue Jays want. Maybe they want Horton instead of PCA. Or PCA and Brown. We just don’t know.
  7. I would do Morel and PCA in a heartbeat for Bichette.
  8. Maybe we laughed at the random guy on Twitter too quickly. This seems real
  9. Poor wording on my part. I know what I wrote but didn’t mean it that way. Y’all have still blown this way out of proportion. This has gotten annoyingly old quick though. Y’all can keep beating a dead horse if you’d like… over a nothing comment. I’d rather use the thread for actual Ohtani updates now.
  10. Same. We’ve gotten a few rumblings, but for the most part it’s been really quiet.
  11. Right. That’s all I was trying to say. Wasn’t trying to get into an argument with somebody about it. Sometimes teams add money to the contract to somewhat offset that issue and sometimes we never hear about that. It’s likely a very marginal thing and hardly ever a deciding factor, but I’m sure it’s a part of negotiations a lot, meaning it is something. Losing millions of dollars is never a “nothing burger.” Not even to millionaires.
  12. “As his agent, Scott Boras noted, it didn’t hurt Philadelphia’s chances that its highest marginal tax rate was about 10 percent less than the 13.3 rate Harper would have faced in California.” Jesus man. Nobody is saying Cali state taxes is the deciding factor EVER. I made one little comment that said “it’s not nothing.” It doesn’t matter. It was a tongue in cheek comment. I literally just gave you an example of a super star player whose agent mentioned it.
  13. https://x.com/bnightengale/status/1726278758615965723?s=46&t=iRdezfuJVGBU0wPvMftX0w
  14. Also it wasn’t a nothing burger for Bryce Harper. He didn’t sign with the Giants due to California state taxes.
  15. Sure stars still go to Cali. I never said they didn’t. But plenty have chosen not to, or to leave at first opportunity. In golf, Tiger and Mickleson both left Cali due to state taxes. When the 49ers drafted Trey Lance, his rookie deal / signing bonus was $34M… after paying $18M in taxes, he only walked away with $16M. I never said it was a deciding factor regarding Ohtani. All I said was it’s a negative. And it is. Losing money is a negative. Whether you’re an athlete making hundreds of millions, or an average person making 100k a year.
  16. So apparently Ohtani just brought in $100M in revenue for the Angels last year. In one year. I mean wow. This is right up Ricketts ally. It’s a win-win for them. No matter what Ohtani gets, Ricketts still makes money on this deal and he gets to keep hundreds of thousands of fans happy by signing off on getting them the best player in baseball. I see why we are all in on Ohtani. He’s going to bring in WAY more money than his contract. I mean we already knew Ohtani would bring in crazy money in revenue, but I didn’t think $100M ANNUALLY. That number might be even higher if he’s a Cub. All the Japanese that will buy Marquee with him and Suzuki on the team. All the jersey sales. It’s a no brainer for Tom. Here’s the article:
  17. Plus those California state tax <<<< that’s not nothing
  18. I mean… if that’s true, that’s major news. Not really something to scoff at.
  19. Yeah, it’s going to be tricky to decide which info to trust and not trust regarding Ohtani. I know he wants it quiet, but I do think there will still be info that gets out. For example, insiders will still be able to get info from the FO of teams that are out on Ohtani. So for instance, I can buy into what you posted here as having some meaning. Like yesterday it came out that Seattle was out. Somebody inside their FO telling Levine or name your insider, that they are out, but Chicago and LA are the most aggressive in their pursuit can and will definitely happen. Now the teams that are really in it aren’t going to talk. Jed will never admit or leak to an insider any details about their pursuit of Ohtani as long as they are still in it.
  20. I agree, but I think it’s been proven that you don’t have to be the Dodgers winning 100+ games and the division each year to be a WS contender. You just have to be a good team that gets hot at the right time. We just watched a WS with 2 wild card teams in it… not the Dodgers, Braves, or Astros. The Phillies went to the WS last year as a Wild Card team. The Nats won it a few years ago as a Wild Card team. Don’t get me wrong, you’d rather be the Dodgers than the Giants or Dbacks hoping to just sneak in the WC and do it that way, but what’s important at the end of the day is just being good enough to get in. I do think we can sell Ohtani that we are set up to run this division for the foreseeable future. The Brewers are about to take a massive step back. The Pirates aren’t anywhere close. The Cardinals aren’t good right now. The Reds have a few nice young players, but they aren’t a threat. The Cubs however have a solid MLB team as it is, plus a top 3 farm system in baseball, & money to spend. We are far and away in the best position of anybody in the division.
  21. Yep. That’s why when Heyman did that interview yesterday and he was saying “LA this” and “blah blah blah” I knew he was just babbling. If you name the Dodgers, Yankees, Mets, Cubs, Padres, and half the league, like he did, odds are you name the team he will choose. Luckiky though, it doesn’t sound like Ohtani wants this to go much past the winter meetings if at all. So we shouldn’t have to wait too terribly long.
  22. Yeah I don’t think anybody is saying “punt 3B until June because Shaw might be ready then.” I assumed it was understood that if we go land some combo of Ohtani, Soto, Alonso, Hoskins, Bellinger, etc, that maybe we’d be okay just treading water at 3B while we figure out if Shaw will be ready this year and get another year of data on him, especially since it seems they want to move him along quickly as long as he can handle it. Re-assess next offseason about 3B. Nobody is saying “Shaw will step in at 3B in July, so don’t waste any money there.” If we do enough other things, we can probably slide by at 3B with Madrigal/Wisdom/prospects/cheap FA’s/maybe a Tim Anderson type flier.
  23. I guess if the bat is good enough, you could always move Hoerner over there. I have no doubt he can play well over there (I just watched Madrigal play well defensively there). I’m sure that’s not ideal, but those things always seem to work themselves out.
  24. How is there not a pivot?
  25. We could always take a shot on Tim Anderson or Yoan Moncada. I feel like the consensus is Matt Shaw will be ready sooner rather than later. Obviously you don’t bank on that, but you do keep it in the back of your mind that maybe if you can tread water at 3B for a little while until Shaw is ready and you see if he’s the guy or not.
