  1. this is like the chaos theory of baseball. maybe if the cubs don't add kevin hart to the roster early in the season, someone else is there who would have told bob howry how to get people out later in the season. it's turtles all the way down.
  2. i think it's just as likely that edmonds tells soto his butt looks big in his pants and geo gets sad and grounds out. i mean, all this stuff is just completely arbitrary. even if it has the tiniest of impacts, there's absolutely no way to project of even reasonable speculate who is doing what and to what effect. in short, it's not worth talking about.
  3. CLUTCHMEN aramis soriano johnson derosa fontenot LADYGIRLS fukudome
  4. Is it possible that once Ramirez started to struggle he pressed even harder and thus struggled even more? Why is it so hard for the analytical to accept this possibility? The Cub players have a lot of pressure on them and I've read comments where they said they didn't want to disappoint the city or really want to break the jinx and possibly struggle a little more than usual because of it? Or, are you just going to come up with another lame joke? is it possible that he just had 11 bad at bats or whatever? (yes. yes it is.)
  5. that's what i was going to say, two ptbnl's in a trade like this one just smacks of waiting to send them the decent prospects when allowed to do so.
  6. For the love of... I have never seen this board put on blinders the way it has with Fukudome. He's not "just in a slump." HE'S JUST NOT THAT GOOD. This is insane, it's like last year when the casual fan message boards wouldn't accept anything bad about Theriot. I'm sick of the excuses. Will someone please just give a date when you guys will FINALLY stop using the "Blah blah blah new country blah blah slump blah blah blah he'll figure it out" stuff, because I've heard it long enough and I'm sick of that crutch. Look, it's simple. He's like Akinori Iwamura. Neither are good producers. That's the end of it. The Cubs made a bad decision but I don't blame them, it seems like Japanese players have been overhyped ever since Ichiro. I feel sorry for the team that pays a $100 million posting fee for Darvish. Get Kosuke the hell out of the #2 spot. #7. did you read this thread, or did you just come here looking for a post like that you could rip to shreds? because if you had read the thread, you would have seen that cynosure was basically alone in proclaiming kosuke fine. why you feel the need to criticize "this board" over the posts of one guy, i have no idea.
  7. that's going to be awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwful. i can see it now. wood collapses and blows three saves in the nlcs, everyone learns the value of the closer, cubs have no choice but to get a good one.
  8. hopefully we're leaning towards fontenot at 2b and derosa at rf, and not edmonds and johnson playing at the same time.
  9. will he sign for next to nothing? will we be willing to cut him loose without thinking twice? say yes to both of those and i'm all for it. i'd be surprised to satisfy either of those requirements, though.
  10. the arguments in favor of marquis here are generally valid, but they apply to every player in the major leagues. if you are defending him and saying it's just a bad contract, then you shouldn't dislike ANY player, unless he's intentionally screwing up. yes, marquis is trying and it's not his fault he's bad. that doesn't mean i'm going to like him.
  11. warp3 really isn't a very good metric, unless you're dumb and you like bp's defensive statistics.
  12. it would be really convenient if kosuke decided to do the "second year japanese power surge thing" and hit 20 home runs next year.
  13. well i'm going to tell you i'm getting an edmonds and then it will be up to you to decide whether that's true.
  14. That makes some sense. I'd still like to know how it wandered into baseball terminology, and if Brenly is the only person who uses it that way. he could use it to refer a starting pitcher who's throwing harder in the ninth inning, seemingly getting stronger. or a starter who is gassed but knows he is facing his last hitter.
  15. ssr, are you getting an edmonds or a harden? i'm getting one of those too, and i don't want to get the same as you.
  16. how about a piece on cubs home/away numbers and whether we've reached the point where we should start reading something to them, and, if not, what that point would be?
  17. i still really read this as a good time to play "what is more likely," but maybe we're nearing the point where we should have meph do an article on this subject or something.
  18. i just hope we can win a game
  19. i agree, when our best hitters struggle, our offensive production declines. if you guys want i can make you a chart
  20. i'm concerned. i got online hoping to hear people say they were watching the az broadcast and seeing 94's.
  21. this is what i was going to say. you've talked about him briefly in the past, and i'd be very interested to read a more fleshed-out analysis.
  22. i was intrigued when i saw the thread title, because i thought maybe it was something like what they're doing with their minor leaguers. this is just dumb as hell.
  23. how can we play a game at night what if the lights break
  24. catchers don't usually wait to hear the call, they often just throw on down to the base, perhaps in part to help sell the pitch as a strike. also, there's no reason you couldn't still have an umpire standing behind home plate if a computer is calling balls and strikes. he needs to be there anyway to make safe/out calls, and you just put a little bug in his ear that tells him to say ball or strike. you wouldn't even know that a computer was involved.
  25. 2007: fastball - 52.5% slider 37.3% 2008: fastball - 62.5% slider 32.4% he's throwing his fastball more often than last year for sure. he's lost a minor amount of velo on both but gained movement, which might contribute to lessened control. he's starting out hitters with FB 59% slider 31% was 73/27 last year so maybe the fastball % is up because he's always behind in the count because he doesn't throw it to start off the hitters enough?
