  1. Murton sits so we can get Macias' stellar glove into CF. Makes sense to me.
  2. There's no way Nomar should be a bench player. Neifi produced a .560 OPS in June and a .575 in July, and those numbers are in line with what we can expect for the rest of the season. Nomar can't possibly do much worse than that, and of course he could potentially do a LOT better.
  3. I am confused by the decision to leave Cedeno on the roster with a healthy Nomar and Neifi.
  4. If Grissom produces even semi-decent results it is a metaphysical certainty that Baker will lobby to keep him for 2006. Baker said he actually asked Hendry to keep Simon and Karros for 2004, and of course we know he wanted Neifi, Holla, and Macias back for 2005.
  5. 2003 - Randall Simon 2004 - Neifi Perez 2005 - Marquis Grissom(?)
  6. Looks like Hendry will try to pull his annual lightning in a bottle act. http://www.suntimes.com/output/cubs/cst-spt-kiley06.html
  7. Why do people persist in saying this? Are the Cubs the only team that is paying off a bad contract?
  8. I like the Rotoworld writers. http://fantasybaseball.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.asp?sport=MLB&leaguenum=&id=6219
  9. That's my question too. So Burnitz is not an ideal defensive CF, but Macias is hardly a gold glove outfielder either.
  10. Actually I do feel sorry for Ronny. The Cubs are doing their best to screw up his career.
  11. Counting tonight's game Cedeno has been on the big league roster for 57 games and has 10 starts. He couldn't get starts even with Nomar gone, so now that Nomar is back it's just baffling that he is still here.
  12. They didn't send him down? I just assumed he was leaving for Iowa tonight.
  13. Yeah, barring injuries I think Murton's season is pretty much over. Damn shame.
  14. Burnitz is cold and the Mets have a lefty on the mound. It'd be a good time to sit Burnitz and let Murton play
  15. I really wish we didn't have 11 more games vs. the Cards. The Astros only have 5.
  16. Alfonseca, Borowski, Hawkins, Remlinger. It seems whenever Hendry commits big dollars to a reliever the story ends badly. At least we got Williams for Hawkins.
  17. Sheffield in Chicago would be another Sosa situation. I doubt Hendry will pursue Sheffield in the offseason after reading his words, but I don't doubt that Sheffield will be shopped around and someone will take him.
  18. What really discourages me is that the Astros play a much softer schedule than the Cubs from here on out. I don't think we're out of the race yet but the situation is pretty bad. If the Astros go up by 8 games we're almost certainly finished.
  19. Do we really need yet another lefty-swinging outfielder? The guy we need to use is a red-haired dude who is already on the team. murton can play CF? where was he today? macias did play OK, though. No, stick Burnitz in CF and Murton on a corner. Burnitz is not the ideal defensive CF but we need to put the best lineup in the game so it's worth taking a chance.

  21. I don't know why the Cubs would believe Corey has turned a corner. If anything his minor league performance makes his problems look even worse.
  22. I would. But you can consider Rothschild as good as gone at the end of the year. Gotta have a scapegoat and it ain't gonna be one of Baker's boys (Pole, Matthews, Clines, Speier). Speier is one of Hendry's picks..not Dustys. I agree that Baker probably won't lose his job this year but, if Hendry has given Baker the guys he has wanted and Baker/Cubs struggles for the rest of 2005, it may be possible it is his last year....slight as it is but possible if it went that way. I'd be surprised if Baker didn't finish out his contract.
  23.          100 million payroll. That's so cheap. It's an 87 million dollar payroll. Calling it a 100 million payroll is another copout by the Trib. Nope. Paying off contracts of underachieving players is part of the cost of doing business. Some contracts work out swell, some don't. The dollar cost is the same. When players overachieve relative to their salaries nobody adds imaginary dollars to payroll quotes.
  24. We're only 1 game ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers. Not good.
