  1. Why would the Cubs open on a Saturday? the 2nd is a Friday, the 1st is a Thursday , I can't think of any other reason (other than the opening of their park) that the Nats have been on ESPN, ever. Is Strasburg even going to be ready to pitch by opening day?
  2. http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/09/cubs-ramirez-still-undecided-about-escape-clause.html Seriously? Mr. "I didn't show up for most of the season but now I'm hitting so it's cool." I'm not one to say that a player owes a team anything. However, after this year, I will actively root against Ramirez if he opts out using that excuse. He certainly didn't have a problem with the players on the team when he signed his big contract in 06.
  3. Do the Yankees have anyone in their system that could eventually replace Jeter? I agree that he'll get some ridiculous contract, but am wondering if the Yankees have any leverage to make it less ridiculous.
  4. Knowing the Cubs, they've taken the opposite route and have given Jim another five-year extension to avoid his hurt feelings.
  5. Anybody have thoughts on Tony Pena? He seemed to catch a bad break with the Royals just being an awful team, but still was part of the only winning season they've had since the dawn of time.
  6. Actually he debuted with the Giants. We traded Hawkins for him and Jerome Williams. Now there's a name I completely and utterly forgot... what happened to Jerome Williams? Doesn't look to be playing this year, did he get cut? He got cut a couple years ago by the A's, although he hasn't pitched in the majors since Washington in 2007. I think it was conditioning and attitude that did him in.
  7. And, why don't we help them out by sending Soriano and his contract for Rasmus. Larussa gets the lead-off guy he desperately needs. :)
  8. No to Greinke. As great a pitcher as he is, he would mentally implode with the pressure of playing on the Cubs. Garza or Hudson would be my picks for pitching.
  9. Do you mean like current manager and heir apparent in the same dugout? If so, I'd say Torre/Girardi and Torre/Mattingley that I can think of off the top of my head.
  10. My only concern is that because of Hendry's positive relationship with Dunn, he'll get a huge five-year deal with a no-trade clause. Hendry isn't exactly known for reasonable deals.
  11. True, but you could probably still make the argument that they are in the evaluation stage until this offseason. If their plan was to have a mostly hands off approach for one season to observe and evaluate where the Cubs are at and what needs to be improved, then it would make sense that they've been so out of the spotlight. But yeah I did expect to see more involvement at this point, although I personally can't think of many instances where their involvement would have changed things all that much. I don't think we can put them in the evaluation stage any more. They had their hands on the Cubs' books as part of the purchasing process so they knew what they were getting into financially. They supposedly raised revenue with the Toyota sign and Kraft Mac and Cheese sculpture outside the park, but what we're seeing is salary dump along with the expectation of decreased payroll in 2011. Does this mean that they're going on the cheap? Not necessarily as there isn't a player or prospect worth throwing money at this year to save the team. The true test will be this off-season. Will they be willing to pay for Adam Dunn/Cliff Lee-type players to contend while build the farm system or are we in full salary dump and rebuild mode?
  12. Fine, but what a thread like this tells me more than anything is that there's a growing feeling out there that Ricketts isn't particularly engaged, when we hoped he would be. I'll still withhold final judgement, but I agree a raised eyebrow or two is appropriate at this juncture. Maybe not engaged, but certainly not the hands-on type of owners they presented themselves to be when they first bought the team. I think on a scale of Moreno to Loria, they're not distinguishing themselves as anything but middle of the road so far.
  13. Looks like someone is auditioning to be the new Mariotti.
  14. Did it say somewhere that they thought they could recall Hoff? Sullivan reported that Hoff was on his way to the airport and had to be called back. The level of incompetency in this organization has reached a new level.
  15. How is it management did not realize that? This seems a pretty entry-level error.
  16. He already gave up $30 million when he was a free agent to resign with the Cubs. You expect him to give up another $30 million to a) play for a team that may or may not make the playoffs and b) enter a depressed free agent market with no guarantee of a multiyear deal? Especially considering his injury history. He'll sign on for next year using his player option and hopefully we'll get a "free agency" type year out of him.
  17. It boggles my mind that Selig can keep his head in the sand on this issue. Empirical and anecdotal evidence keeps pointing to expanded replay, but he claims that there isn't enough support for it. I just don't see how that's possible. Every team with a game on the line would probably want some recourse for a questionable call. There's just no reason for this to still be debated. Just do it already!
  18. All because of Brandon Phillips. If only motivation were so easy for all of us.
  19. Frankly, both the Reds and St. Louis can kiss my keister. Phillips hates the Cubs too as he said in his statement. Here's to Houston pulling a stunning comeback and winning the division. :beee:
  20. My favorite position player as pitcher was Mark Grace when he played for the DBacks and did his best Mike Fetters impersonation.
  21. I'm sure that no other team will emply the old "get him" strategy. ;) Well, the only two teams that get a say before the Cubs are Pittsburgh and Arizona, and I can't really see either of them putting in a claim. Then again, I don't see the Cubs putting in a claim either. I do think the Giants should jump all over this if no one claims Dunn before them. My point really wasn't about waiver order. The Nats aren't just letting Dunn go...they're going to want something for him. Exactly. Better to trade any over-valued prospects we have than losing draft picks by signing him in the off-season. I'm delusional in thinking the Cubs will make Dunn a priority to replace Lee, but it's a happy world in which I live.
  22. Obviously everyone gets put on waivers. The only reason I posted it is because the Cubs would theoretically be in a position to make a move if they so desired.
  23. Link If the Cubs were ambitious, they would try to make a trade for him because they're third in waiver claim process and sign him to a multi-year contract as part of the deal. That would avoid having Dunn as a type A FA at the end of the season if they wanted to sign him.
  24. I hope the Cubs get saddled with payroll limitations until Hendry is gone because I absolutely do not trust him to spend surplus money on players that fit on this team. He's given middle relievers $5m/year contracts, he's signed 30 year old OFs to 8 year deals, he's given just about every decent signing/resigning no trade clauses, he's addressed a lack of a LH power bat by signing the player (of the LH bats) who hits the worst against Righties, and gave him the most money of the options out there. Let's give Randy Bush priority power on off-season contracts, Hendry on trade deadline deals and Wilken stays in charge of the draft. Wouldn't happen, but it keeps Hendry away from the full checkbook.
