Hoyer not looking to add anyone of significant to the pen or rotation, I said before when Imanaga returned, they have their rotation set and more with Steele returning in May/June and some depth with Rea, Assad, Wicks, and possibly Wiggins later in year. I still feel at best Hoyer will add a couple depth type starters. I want to be wrong cause they need another TOR type starter, I just dont see them doing it this offseason. Same with bullpen, they have a bunch of in house guys already and I doubt Hoyer going to spend more than 5 mil on a reliever, so at best he'll likely add a couple depth type arms here too, nothing exciting. But Hey, all is ok, they promoted Zombo to VP of pitching after 1 year so the Nationals wouldn't hire him 🙄 😉

I hope not, but i can see them sticking with their position players to get through the first offseason of the new CBA and possibly a delay in starting the season if they hold out.

Dodgers since as long as i can remember, has always made up their rosters with mostly home grown talent and then added top notch veteran players where needed via trade and FA to surround them with. It's like a revolving door of talent for them in their system and why they have always been an above 500 team just about every season

That why their payroll is up there in top 5 to 10 every year is because of the multiple 15-25 per guys that they sign to 2 to 5 year deals, while avoiding the big signings for one or two stars.

Handing out 8+ year deals to players 32+ for past performances is plain dumb, offering up 8+ years to someone like Tucker for example isnt bad at all.

Right and they can be talking about lesser players that they represent like the 2 relievers they just signed, not the big boys we hope that they would talk about.

Wasn't assuming how much they'll contribute, just in my response to the post was just saying that they have guys currently on roster and starting now for them, or in system (Caissie, Ballesteros), that can be in 2027 OD lineup. So if Hoyer chooses not to upgrade and basically keep the current guys he has, they just need to add a 2Bmen to replace Hoerner and another OFer to replace Happ. Ballesteros can replace Suzuki as DH Not saying that what going to happen just that in my response to Cuzi, they done HAVE to go out and get 4-5 new everyday players because as of now they can easily fill 7 of those spots with who they have if Hoyer chooses.

The point was is that they don't necessarily NEED to go out and bring in all those guys if they don't want to because they have guys already filling in those spots outside of adding 1 outfielder and a 2Bmen for the starting 8 positions. Theyre definitely going to give Caissie an opportunity to fill an outfield spot in left or right, so that leave 2B, another outfielder that as of now will be open. Sure they can upgrade at 3B over Shaw and they will add a 2nd catcher, but they currently now have 7 players that can start on OD for them in 2027 if you include Ballesteros as DH.

Why i was saying last week, most of time they just throw names out there in assumption cause it fits teams needs, not because there was actual talks from Jed to player/agent about a possible contract.

They wont need that many if they don't bring back Hoerner Happ or Suzuki... Theyll have Amaya, Busch, Swanson, Shaw, PCA, and hopefully Caissie and Ballesteros(DH) So basically just need a LFer or RFer depending on where Caissie plays, and a 2Bmen. If you really think about it, this roster worked out perfect for Ricketts/Hoyer if the plan is to not have too spend to much $$$ on bringing in FA the next couple offseasons because they have control of majority of the position players and a couple of prospects ready to come up and fill in the holes that will be vacated.

I think some of these offers or more so interested teams will likely be revisited closer to the trade deadline if the Cubs arent contending and Hoyer looks to move expiring contracts.. Be dumb to move him now if the goal is to return to the postseason

Maybe seeing how it affected the team with Soriano and Heyward, scared him from making that kind of commitment 🤷♂️

I hope im wrong too... 44.5 mil left under Threshold and 7 players still needed to fill out roster, doesn't leave much left for other 6 if they add a guy for 20+ and he holds at minimum 10 mil for in season spending.

Ok but even if you add another 25 to 30, outside of 2024, they'd still be over 20 under on OD. I hope he only chooses to stay 10-15 under this year, but even that would only mean adding/signing one guy between 15-20, which would leave him between 25-30 to add 6 others to the roster. We'll see

Here the last 4 season Threshold and Cubs Opening Day payroll 2022 Threshold 230 OD payroll 143 87 under 2023 Threshold 233 OD payroll 184 49 under 2024 Threshold 237 OD payroll 214 23 under 2025 Threshold 241 OD payroll 178 63 under So going by the last 4 seasons, im way under where he's been 3 of last 4 years with how much under the Threshold he stays going into the season. So with 44+ to spend on 7 players, and even if he spends 2/3 of that and stays 15 under this season, I still doubt they add someone to a 15+ deal unless he plans on adding a bunch of really low deals and or bringing guys up from Iowa. 🤷♂️ So in reality, if they seriously plan on NOT going over the Threshold this season and Hoyer stays with his plan of holding a good sum of money going into the season, our hopes and expectations of them adding a significant player/contract is really dim.

Cubs payroll sits at around 199.5 now with 19 players on roster, leaving them with 44+ under the Threshold. If Hoyer does his usual savings for in season moves, he probably will look to spend about 25 on 7 players to fill out roster, so it not looking good for the better FA thatll be looking for more than 15 mil.

Unless I'm missing someone, looks like they now have 5 of 9 bullpen spots secured. Assad/Rea, Maton, Hodge, Milner(L), and Palencia Likely 6 assuming they add another starter and both Assad and Rea will go to the Pen. Need another lefty and late inning/closer

I think with looking to add a couple pitchers and probably bench depth, Hoyer only looking to add one guy with a salary of 15-20 mil and that will likely be used on a SP, and then spread the remaining of whatever cutoff he wants to be at under the Threshold on the rest.

I never expect much out of winter meetings, I just think baseball offseason is boring when it comes to transactions because most if the big transactions don't really happen til 2-3 months after the season over. As far as the Cubs and this offseason goes, im not expecting much from them outside of maybe adding a decent SP.
