  1. Really really good read here Talks a lot about things that get brought up every day, but brings some hard numbers to the table which we're sorely needed.
  2. It's not just you, injuries for minor leaguers are really hard to track down. If it's something that plainly happened on the field we obviously know, but otherwise unless you're a team's top one or two prospects the updates are slow to come in. Since he didn't get put on the IL, best guess should be something minor and nagging, but even that's not a guarantee.
  3. Tyler Schlaffer worked 7 innings or more for the third time in his last four. Even in the midst of this heater the K/BB numbers are more solid than spectacular, but feels like he's making the case for a little extra attention.
  4. Woof, absolutely awful outing from Neely, who was looking about ready. On the bright side Pearson appears to be coming out of his funk. And he got the save opp tonight which is often a tacit tip of the hand for "next man up" from the org.
  5. Cubs currently have the best record in the NL and are a half game up on both the Mets and Dodgers. Even if the Dodgers win tonight Cubs will still have a slightly better winning percentage.
  6. Yeah it feels like the opposite of yesterday, the forecast looks uglier the closer we get to game time.
  7. Misiorowski is a very very good pitching prospect, but even most tippy top prospects don't have amazing performance right away. Just look at Horton, he's got good not great numbers despite an absolute cupcake of a schedule to this point.
  8. Not all fat guys are the same, but probably notable when thinking about Ballesteros that Alejandro Kirk managed to turn himself into a pretty strong defender.
  9. I think it might depend on whether it's Rea or one of the kids getting the boot from the rotation for Shota. If Rea is heading to the pen you can probably dump Flexen now. Otherwise yeah I think Cabrera goes because Craig seems to really value having a long guy.
  10. 6.5 game lead in tbe division. If they can hold onto this through the stretch of division games over the next few weeks you can really start feeling comfortable operating with an eye towards October.
  11. He passed Long and Mo in OPS tonight. Though I think he'll still be behind in wRC+ because those two are heavier in the OBP department
  12. Yeah I think broadly our lefties mash the ball low and our righties mash the ball high. So a sinker righty should be a good matchup. Though Patrick does like doing the high sinker move which is a fun gambit. On top of that with the wind finally blowing out again a 27% GB rate is going to be living dangerously.
  13. I am probably Brown's biggest cheerleader, but this really ought to be an Opener situation. Now that Contreras' offense has come back to earth they are a very unimposing team against LHP. Add in how well it worked against the Reds and also the weather forecast, and it feels like a fairly perfect opportunity.
  14. I was really hot after Kikuchi over the winter. That said the fact the Cubs were not all that hot after him then does cool some of the flames. It's true that the only period of the last few years he spent with a smart team were the best two months of his life. But if there's causation there and not just coincidence why didn't someone else pay up? I'm not as interested in Soriano. A second TJ surgery is no joke. The number of guys who've come out the other end and had long term success is pretty short. Basically just Nate Eovaldi and Jameson Taillon? The injury risk plus the cost plus the degree to which he's a work in progress as a pitcher is not a combo I want to expend that player capital on. Kenley Jansen seems like a bad fit. He would not be deserving of the closer job here, but he is correctly focused on padding his save stats and chasing down milestones. Hanging out in Anaheim is exactly where he should be at this stage.
  15. I think the plot has been lost a bit on the limiting innings front. Ben Brown's currently track for something like 160 innings, and Horton like 140. You'd probably like to lop about 20 off of both those numbers? But like that doesn't require anything extreme. - A couple weeks in Iowa going once a week instead of as part of a proper rotation does the trick - A three week stint on the IL does the trick - A couple skipped starts spread around does the trick. And what do you know we have the ASB coming up, as well as the TDL, as well as a couple guys coming off the IL. Several opportunities to give the current rotation some rest - A month in the bullpen does the trick Like I'm all for creativity, but it feels like this can be approached in a pretty straightforward manner. Especially with a 5+ game lead, the difference between 20 innings of Cade Horton and 20 innings of Colin Rea is not going to kill you.
  16. Jake Burger had a 79 wRC+ against lefties just last year
  17. This is almost it. Gotta swap Mo and Caissie though. Long - .381 Franklin - .379 Caissie - .373 Mo - .359
  18. Among AAA hitters with at least 200 PAs, the Iowa Cubs have four guys in the top sixteen in xwOBA. Can you guess who and in what order? #6. ??? #7. ??? #8. ??? #16. ???
  19. I generally think trying to predict specific trades is a fool's errand. That said if I were trying to call my shot I think Owen Caissie and a SP prospect for Sandy Alcantara feels kind of glove perfect. Assuming Alcantara continues rounding into form of course. I'm also really interested in David Bednar. I hadn't realized until I saw his numbers on screen earlier this past series that he was fixed. And given some of his recent struggles plus the salaries that closers get in arb I would guess the player return for him would be fairly modest.
  20. Ethan Hearn is hitting .279/.333/.492 since Tom got banned. With how pitcher friendly the southern league is that's a wRC+ of around 140 This is maybe my favorite subplot on the farm right now
  21. Rojas back in the lineup!
  22. The leverage guys in the bullpen are all almost certainly unavailable. Maybe Keller can go, but you'd certainly try to stay away from him if possible. And with a 5.5 game lead I think it'd be dumb to push it. Given the above and the Pirates struggles with lefties, I would be shocked if Thielbar and Cabrera don't each go and wouldn't be surprised if each were asked for more than 3 outs.
  23. Dbacks and Red Sox are hot, which is bad for deadline purposes On the flip side the Royals and Twins are fading a bit. If that were to continue it'd be very good news
