  1. I wouldn't be surprised if this ultimately happens, but Hector Gomez makes Bob Nightengale look good at his job
  2. Royals are extending Seth Lugo, so cross that one off the list
  3. Lumpuy continues to rake, 2/2 with a triple early on And Yahil Melendez got lifted after one at bat. Probably injury, but you never know this time of year.
  4. Love the idea of Iglesias. He's been much better than his ERA, especially lately. And given his bloated salary the prospect cost should be pretty minimal.
  5. Rojas on base 4 time today. Just looked it up and looks like he's the 5th youngest hitter in AA this year. If he has a good two months at Tenn to close out the year hard to see how he's not a top ~30 overall prospect over the winter.
  6. Even if this is trade related, I wouldn't interpret it as all three guys are about to be part of one potential deal. I'd interpret it as there are multiple deals close enough to the finish line to warrant this caution. Probably with a good deal of either/or in place. E.g. Caissie to the Pirates (for Keller) or Alcantara to the Marlins (for Alcantara).
  7. None of Caisse, Alcantara, or Long in today's lineup for Iowa 👀
  8. Curious if anything happens today. Last year IIRC Pearson was Saturday, Paredes was Sunday, and then Leiter was on the actual deadline Wednesday.
  9. Annnnd Raisel just got spotlight by Sharma in the Athletic this AM
  10. I think the "Hey we're gonna have you take 3-4 days off to work on mechanics and mentally reset" thing seems to have clearly been big for both Shaw and Amaya. Clearly good managing from Craig. That said I think the timing is because these guys are getting up to 300ish PAs around this point. I think that's enough experience to have your feet under you a bit and start fighting back against MLB pitcbers. For instance Busch seemed to settle in early June last year, but he already came into last season with ~100 at bats under his belt.
  11. Hodge pitched and the velo was normal. Gave up a solo dong and K'd two. I'd assume unlike last time they're going to take their sweet time with the rehab assignment, since I think this is also somewhat doubling as a mechanical cleanup
  12. His ERA significantly overstates how good he's been, but still feels like Flanagan shouldn't be at Myrtle anymore.
  13. Pleeeease let this be Triantos figuring out AAA
  14. He's just connected enough that you can't write him off. It also doesn't help that he's a grade A moron, so if you have something where he's injecting his opinion good luck. I'd be shocked if the Cubs do all of that personally. That said if you shop on the low end for all of those (Lugo as the top SP, Bieber as the other guy, etc.) I could maybe see it.
  15. Houser is basically just Colin Rea that the regression monster just hasn't quite caught up to yet. The velo's up so he's legitimately better than he was a year ago, but he's still a #4/#5 that has no right starting a playoff game. Mooney does more or less say he'd be the lesser pitcher added, so fine whatever, but I really hope people don't look at his ERA and think he's good now. I'd like to think Rea and now Flexen are helping break that habit?
  16. I'd be pretty ecstatic for any of Gore, Ryan, or Cabrera. I think when you combine what those guys do to set up the postseason rotation in the short term plus how they affect this coming offseason, it's just a massive impact. I don't think any rental can be only move made over the next week and not leave me livid that more wasn't done. Even Cease.
  17. Yeah I'm expecting he'll go to the bullpen after another couple starts. Teams now have much more sophisticated tools than the old Verducci "your career high + 30 innings" rule of thumb, but realistically they still usually end up in that neighborbood. 120ish regular season innings is probably what we're looking at for Horton, especially if they want him to be more than nominally available in October.
  18. Moises' single a few innings ago at 112.3 MPH is the hardest hit ball he's had since he got to AAA. And given his age I'd presume his hardest hit ball of his life (in game of course).
  19. I think you could argue a pretty wide range of values for Castro. But I would suspect he's worth less than Naylor. So yeah one guy in the neighborhood of #10 in the system and then another closer to #30 is probably what I'd expect.
  20. I've been using Sanders and Pedro Ramirez as my mental model of what one of the top rental bats would cost, so yeah I think Sanders/Triantos is about the same. Maybe since Suarez is *the* top bat we need to aim a little higher. Like Wicks or Birdsell instead of Sanders? But regardless of specifics two guys that'd slot in around #10 in our system is a good place to set expectations.
  21. So I believe this is somewhat up for dispute. Arizona Phil listed him as having two options heading into this year. And as much as Arizona Phil's opinions can be....interesting....I do tend to trust him pretty implicitly on roster administration minutiae. That said the general point stands. I think if the Cubs are willing to dip into the crew at Iowa they're going to win the bidding on nearly any player they covet. Teams generally have to choose between talent and proximity when they get prospects back at the deadline. Receiving someone with impact talent who you can call up immediately is going to be really tempting for opposing teams.
