  1. I hadn't really thought of that but I like it a lot. Though I don't know how often it'd actually get used. Happ's a lot weaker against lefties than righties but not weak enough to justify a benching. I would guess the lineup vs. lefties would look something like this? Hoerner / Tucker/ Seiya PCA / Suarez / Swanson Happ / Turner / Kelly I'd also expect that same 2-5 vs. righties. Trueblood talked in an article this week about the vulnerability the lineup has to lefty relievers coming in to get PCA. That Seiya/Tucker/Suarez sandwich would really help address that issue.
  2. I don't think "not top 10" is anywhere close to "bottom of the barrel"?
  3. Jed's probably not the best GM in the league, but we're at a point where the difference between like 3rd and 10th or whatever isn't huge. This team is set up extremely really well for the next several years, and it would probably do more harm than good to swap out POBOs at this stage even if an upgrade were available.
  4. For posterity before things get moving this week, this would be my A+ deadline - Edward Cabrera - Shane Bieber - Willi Castro - Raisel Iglesias Given the tenor of Trueblood's article this AM, I assume there's little worry about Cabrera's elbow. And if he is healthy he checks every box. He gives you a stuff heavy righty to break up Boyd and Shota in a playoff series. He cheaply addresses the SP hole for next year, and he helps provide a bridge past the post '26 roster cliff I've talked incessantly about Castro, but he provides rest/injury insurance everywhere but catcher, and provides support for Shaw at 3B without outright blocking him. Perfect fit IMO. Iglesias and Bieber are (probably) quality pitchers on pricey contracts who I expect to cost little to nothing in prospects. Bieber's likely twoish weeks from being back in the bigs. I wouldn't expect him to be at 100% right out of the shoot, but I would expect him to be in the neighborhood of Rea, while hopefully improving continually as he knocks off the rust. Honestly he's pretty analogous to where Boyd was a year ago at this time. But I think this really patches up the various holes on the roster, adds some impact talent as well, and doesn't completely eviscerate the farm.
  5. The Cubs are among the better teams in the league at handling velo. Against pitches 98 MPH+ - 10th in xwOBA - 11th lowest whiff rate - 8th in hard hit rate - 5th in barrel rate Add in that Miz has generally been 5 and dive, and I don't think this is going to be as bad of a day for the offense as you'd think.
  6. Nate Pearson over the last two months: 20 IP, 1.35 ERA, 25 Ks, 6 BB, 1 HR Nate Pearson in July: 8 IP, 2.25 ERA, 12 Ks, 2 BB, 0 HR He looks back on track. Depending on how much pitching gets brought in at the deadline, I'd be happy to bring him back up. Let him be the low leverage mopup guy and start trying to work his way back up the pecking order.
  7. Assuming the team feels good about Cabrera's elbow, I'd do it. I'd be a bit queasy about it, but I'd do it. Which is probably a good sign that it's a fair deal. But it really can't be overstated how big it'd be to get a guy you could have start a playoff game this year who will also be around less year making <$5M. Just absolutely massive impact on the next 15 months. If you can do it without Wiggins? It becomes a slam dunk then. Probably looks more like Caissie, Assad, and Long?
  8. I wouldn't be surprised if this ultimately happens, but Hector Gomez makes Bob Nightengale look good at his job
  9. Royals are extending Seth Lugo, so cross that one off the list
  10. Lumpuy continues to rake, 2/2 with a triple early on And Yahil Melendez got lifted after one at bat. Probably injury, but you never know this time of year.
  11. Love the idea of Iglesias. He's been much better than his ERA, especially lately. And given his bloated salary the prospect cost should be pretty minimal.
  12. Rojas on base 4 time today. Just looked it up and looks like he's the 5th youngest hitter in AA this year. If he has a good two months at Tenn to close out the year hard to see how he's not a top ~30 overall prospect over the winter.
  13. Even if this is trade related, I wouldn't interpret it as all three guys are about to be part of one potential deal. I'd interpret it as there are multiple deals close enough to the finish line to warrant this caution. Probably with a good deal of either/or in place. E.g. Caissie to the Pirates (for Keller) or Alcantara to the Marlins (for Alcantara).
  14. None of Caisse, Alcantara, or Long in today's lineup for Iowa 👀
  15. Curious if anything happens today. Last year IIRC Pearson was Saturday, Paredes was Sunday, and then Leiter was on the actual deadline Wednesday.
  16. Annnnd Raisel just got spotlight by Sharma in the Athletic this AM
  17. I think the "Hey we're gonna have you take 3-4 days off to work on mechanics and mentally reset" thing seems to have clearly been big for both Shaw and Amaya. Clearly good managing from Craig. That said I think the timing is because these guys are getting up to 300ish PAs around this point. I think that's enough experience to have your feet under you a bit and start fighting back against MLB pitcbers. For instance Busch seemed to settle in early June last year, but he already came into last season with ~100 at bats under his belt.
  18. Hodge pitched and the velo was normal. Gave up a solo dong and K'd two. I'd assume unlike last time they're going to take their sweet time with the rehab assignment, since I think this is also somewhat doubling as a mechanical cleanup
  19. His ERA significantly overstates how good he's been, but still feels like Flanagan shouldn't be at Myrtle anymore.
  20. Pleeeease let this be Triantos figuring out AAA
  21. He's just connected enough that you can't write him off. It also doesn't help that he's a grade A moron, so if you have something where he's injecting his opinion good luck. I'd be shocked if the Cubs do all of that personally. That said if you shop on the low end for all of those (Lugo as the top SP, Bieber as the other guy, etc.) I could maybe see it.
  22. Houser is basically just Colin Rea that the regression monster just hasn't quite caught up to yet. The velo's up so he's legitimately better than he was a year ago, but he's still a #4/#5 that has no right starting a playoff game. Mooney does more or less say he'd be the lesser pitcher added, so fine whatever, but I really hope people don't look at his ERA and think he's good now. I'd like to think Rea and now Flexen are helping break that habit?
