  1. I love how Theo seemingly goes out of his way to undercut Wittenmeyer. I wish he was similarly vindictive with Kaplan.
  2. Do we know how hard Hudson is throwing these days? Because he's still pretty young and those Fielding Independent numbers are solid. If/when he some of that projectable velocity from draft time becomes realized velocity he could become a thing pretty quick. Also, I didn't realize Hatch spent all of last year at Myrtle Beach. I'm suddenly much more forgiving of his slow start to the year, seeing as it was his first taste of AA.
  3. Yeah I'm generally of the mind "don't jump to any conclusions until at least Memorial Day" but dude is running a 45% k-rate in just under 100 PAs. His in zone contact rate was only 62% coming into play, so it has probably dropped into the 50's by this point. Guy just looks broken. That being said, I'm fairly happy with the strides he's made on defense :dontknow:
  4. damn it we always call off the damn dogs dongs FTFY
  5. I don't expect the division to end up all that close, and I don't think a Machado deal makes sense unless it stays this close into late July. Even then, I'm not comfortable giving up pieces beyond Addy except for fringe guys like Tseng/Zagunis/etc. While I prefer Harper, I could probably be convinced that Machado is the better play this winter though.
  6. This series did some real damage. I think we only win the division by 7 or 8 games now
  7. Does anyone know when Patrick Mooney changed from being a pretty good (if slightly boring) beat writer to being Captain Doom Boner? It feels like it happened very suddenly, and he's gotten really bad. He got like this at the end of his time at CSN, so I don't know that we can blame the Athletic.
  8. Hendricks Quintana Darvish Lester Chatwood I'm not worried about Yu or Q, I think it's just a slump for both. Lester looks pretty bad this year though, and Chatwood looks great for 80% of each start but for the other 20% he looks like late career Carlos Marmol. I'd be less concerned if he had "one bad inning" disease but it comes and goes seemingly at random. I just don’t see Lester looking awful. At least not any more than some of the other guys. At times he actually looks really good still. Other times he struggles with command and gets caught nibbling too much. But what starter isn’t doing that more often than you’d like right now besides Hendricks? I just feel like I haven't seen Lester be able to miss bats against good hitters. He's done a good job of inning management, plus had some good fortune with how the lineup has turned over (e.g. two guys on but the pitcher is coming up). So I'm more worried with him that the nibbling is just what he has to do now.

  10. The center field camera operator might honestly be drunk.
  11. Even 7 games back I felt confident the Dodgers were gonna rip off like 25 of 35 at some point and still win the division handily, but I think at this point the Dbacks have to be considered pretty solid favorites to hold on. Like the Dodgers are still better, but not enough to overcome that head start.
  12. I like Pace and think we've had a very good offseason, however I think the Kyle Fuller and Cam Meredith situations were pretty big unforced errors that make me hesitant to give him an A. Overall I'm very happy with where the team is though. They are good enough to go as far as Mitch can take them (and I believe he's a frontline talent), the roster has a good amount of quality youth, and the salary cap situation looks quite healthy. The Fuller situation worked out just fine Sure it worked out fine, but the situation very easily could have been good if we had him at 1/14. Now we have him under a contract that is pretty hard to get out of until after year 3, for a guy who has really only had one good year. It's certainly not a move that will kill us, but it is kind of sloppy.

  14. I would guess Plan A is to dump Heyward, and Plan B is Zobrist. I also wonder about Chatwood. Lets say Alzolay has a good year at Iowa this year, and Lange pitches half the season at AA and does well. I could see them dumping Chatwood and his $13m since they'd have those two plus Smyly to fill out the 5th starter spot while still maintaining good rotation depth.
  15. Dude's mockdraftable page is pretty impressive https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/bilal-nichols
  16. I think the window thing is a very real consideration. Timing this pick to sync with Trubisky's rookie contract has value. That's part of why the Eagles and(especially) Rams used up so much of their draft capital on trading for veterans, really trying to strenghten their teams around Goff and Wentz while they're cheap. Also, the strengths of this draft were round 1 QBs and general depth in round 2. Assuming next year is a normal draft, it's very possible pick 50 this year is graded pretty equivalently to pick 40 next year, even excluding TVM considerations.
  17. Robert Mays of the Ringer has talked about how coverage linebackers who are fast are becoming more valuable with the way offenses are changing (RPOs, more emphasis on slot guys. RB passes, etc.). It still probably doesnt make ILB a priority position, but maybe it is not as low on the positional spectrum as it used to be. I think the Bears are sitting pretty for round 2. I'd be ecstatic with Landry, Hernandez, or Sutton, and still pretty happy with the other guys Wrigley22 mentioned. I hope Pace doesn't trade down, or at least not more rhan a handful of spots.
  18. Coincidentally, Matt Miller says we might take McGlinchey at 8 if Nelson is gone. That's a guy who should go in the teens or early 20's. That being said, there is a lot of talk that Pace wants to recoup the 3rd he lost in the Trubisky trade. And if Nelson is gone at 8, there are at least a half dozen defensible choices, which would lend itself to trading down a few spots.
  19. The offense numbers on FG aren't position adjusted. It's basically wOBA (less the constant that scales it to OBP) * PAs + Baserunning runs
  20. I think It's fair to say that it is pretty cool that Bauer takes an engineer's approach to pitching and pitching mechanics. I also think it's fair to say that Bauer should be happy the whole baseball thing worked out, because he has given no indication that he actually has the intelligence to have made a good engineer.
  21. The first week or two was insane. I lived just east of Halsted and could hear the noise from inside, and if i stepped out onto my back deck it was clear as day. After that they lowered it to a more reasonable level where I couldn't hear it inside, and outside it wasn't too much louder than general crowd noise.
  22. Wilson + Rain means minimum six walks this inning
  23. I make it a point to not get too excited or too disappointed in anybody until about Memorial Day, but Heyward has me cautiously optimistic.
  24. Todd McShay put out a draft buzz article this morning, and it has got some interesting tidbits in it. http://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2018/insider/story/_/id/23290452/todd-mcshay-2018-nfl-draft-buzz-everything-hearing-top-prospects-teams-picks -Browns are taking a QB at 1, increasingly looking like Allen -Giants are NOT planning on trading down. Sounds like they want Darnold if he's there, otherwise one of Barkley/Chubb -Jets are taking a QB (duh), sounds like Darnold is their top choice -Browns are taking Barkley/Chubb at 4, people aren't sure who they'd take if both are available -Broncos like Chubb and Mayfield, and will likely trade back if both are gone -No notes on the Colts -"[Derwin] James going to Tampa Bay seems like the worst-kept secret in the NFL right now." And then here is his blurb on the Bears Taken all together, it makes it look like Nelson will make it to the Bears unless the Colts take him. If only 3 QBs go before the Bears pick, which looks increasingly unlikely, the Bears will look to trade back.
