  1. Yeah, I think trading Hendricks would be a sign that we're fully turning the page. At that point you've absolutely got to do Contreras as well. I actually don't like the idea of trading Bryant in that case though. If we're just fully trolling for value, hold onto the one year guys til the summer. At least one of them will go off and be mega valuable in July. Don't settle for modest value here in January.
  2. Last year he was a disaster, but the two years before that he was a solid 2nd division starter type with the Yankees.
  3. Looks like the Angels haven't closed the door on acquiring a catcher after adding Suzuki.
  4. Yeah I think this is where I'm at unless the Cowboys are dumb enough to let Dak go.
  5. This sounds like a last gasp to wring an extra couple million out of Philly. I wouldn't be surprised if he signs this weekend.
  6. Edit: Rosenthal got Nightengale'd
  7. It's a one year deal, seems to be more insurance in case Heaney/Canning break down and Ohtani is toast. I still think they're a landing spot for Bauer. Angels are ~$23M under the luxury tax. That's not enough for Bauer. We don't know that they're for sure using the tax line as a cap but they've never crossed it before. Just a generally weird last week for them. They seemed primed for one more big splash, and then did Quintana and Kurt Suzuki. Maybe they've got a trade lined up?
  8. Weird. This seems to imply the Angels are out on Bauer? Mets can't really fit him either...so is he going to the Jays too? Or the Dodgers? Good for Q though. In a vacuum I like him on this deal, but our rotation already has 3 finesse guys so he's probably not the best fit.
  9. I'm not too worried about Theo knowing explicitly. It sounds like the interpretor was a dead end and even in the bro-est of offices this isn't exactly the sort of thing that you bring up around your boss's boss's boss. That said, Theo does have to own the culture. And there's not a ton of reason to give him the benefit of the doubt that this was a one-off and things were otherwise completely buttoned up.
  10. Yeah, the Cubs farm isn't bereft of talent but most of it is very young. They're also lacking a star to hang your hat on. That said they might honestly have the best collection of teenagers in the league. That's not going to help the team in the short term, but is a good recipe for shooting up the rankings in a single season. There's also the crew that would have been at Myrtle Beach last year (Davis, Roederer, etc.). Have one or two of those guys kill it in AA this year, and suddenly you do have that Top 25 overall guy to hang your hat on.
  11. The Cubs' statement mentioned that both of them are gone already. I'm guessing not Theo or Scott Harris, as they're high enough profile they would have been named. But whoever it was had to be sufficiently high enough that you'd come to with a problem with one of Theo's lieutenants. Didn't the Cubs' old PR guy have some contentious relationships with reporters around the time of the Russell stuff? Based on the article it sounds like she is a Japanese reporter who was following the team. I wonder if she spoke with the team’s interpreter. Did we have a Japanese interpreter with the team in 2016? Munenori Kawasaki was briefly on the team (which surprised me, I though he was just a ST guy), so that makes sense. Koji Uehara also signed over the 2016-2017 winter, so maybe his guy?
  12. Looks like the Phillies, if they nab Realmuto, are going to push payroll even higher, nearing $200M. I'd imagine that doesn't affect us unless you're hoping for JBJ, CF is the obvious spot for them to upgrade and the Cubs could use one as well.
  13. The Cubs should fire whoever talked to her from the team.
  14. Not great!
  15. Good for Jon. I'm pretty convinced he's cooked, so I'm happy to see him get paid but also glad that it's happening somewhere else.
  16. Musgrove was one of only 3 players on the Pirates to project north of 2 WAR. Also kind of have to wonder if Dinelson Lamer is still hurt.
  17. I tend to think TINSTAAP applies to catchers as well, but hot damn I hadn't seen it written out like this before.
  18. It didn't end up mattering, but it is wild that in 2021 ball spotting is so arbitrary. I feel like that and clock starting/stopping could really use a technology facelift.
  19. By Football Outsiders dYAR (DVOA translated into yards essentially), Wentz was further below replacement level than Russell Wilson was above it this season. HELL. NO.
