  1. very good article Tim. you propose the kind of out-of-the-box thinking I for one would love to see the Cubs do once in awhile. you can't ignore Z's decline over the last few years, no-hitter notwithstanding, and if this rumor is true, it presents a true sell high scenario so many of us wish the Cubs could do "effectively" more often.
  2. Knowing Boston, they'd probably ask for something more than just Bradley. Bradley + Fuld/Colvin + Berg/Stevens/Atkins for Lowell + Hermida (No cash exchanged) Boston can trade Ellsbury for Adrian Gonzalez and use an OF of Bradley, Cameron, and Drew with Gonalez, Pedroia, Scutaro, and Youkilis in the IF with Martinez @ C. This would also help the Red Sox avoid the luxury tax (from MLBTR): WEEI's Alex Speier says Boston's payroll is at an all-time franchise high and projects to be just under the $170MM luxury tax threshold. Once they get over $170MM there is a 22.5% penalty. Is the Lowell trade to Texas offiicially dead in the water??
  3. This is all Cot's has on his 2011 option: Neither of the 1st 2 things happened so 2011 did not "become" a club option but rather remained a guaranteed year.
  4. Exactly. So many are thinking the glass is half empty re this situation. Perhaps Hendry is taking his time because the offers for Bradley have sucked, and altho he realizes a trade must be made, he's not going to allow the Cubs to get totally fleeced in making a deal.
  5. But if your kitchen is repaired and is made better than it was before the fire with stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and a ceramic tile floor, wouldn't you be better off than you were before the fire? :D
  6. Thank you Bruce. Hear anything juicy or is it basically calm, besides the trade? Sorry for the delay. Was a little busy. It's calm on the surface, but underneath, there's a whole lot of talk going on. I think we'll see some action at the winter meetings. I drive down to Indy Sunday and will be blogging all day every day there. Should be fun. Bruce: what's your take/opinion on the Cubs not offering arby to Harden?
  7. Harden made it known that he wanted to stay with the Cubs too. Each of those guys makes twice as much as Harden, and Damon's the only one who might be a better player next year. So do you think then that each would have accepted arby if offered?
  8. Considering the Yankees can probably add 3 all star caliber free agents for the price it would cost to retain a guy hampered by a bad back, a guy who is certainly on the down slide of his career and one other guy who only wants to pitch for the Yankees, I'd say it was pretty smart on their part to not offer to any of those guys. So you think all 3 would have accepted arby then instead of holding out for longer term deals w/other teams? I can envision Petit doing that given his age and maybe even Damon, but Matsui?
  9. The Yankees apparently didn't offer arby to Matsui, Damon, or Petit? Do y'all consider these stupid decisions too? Just wondering/discuss...
  10. Procedural question: can stuff like that be a reason to put a guy on the DL? Because that would have been a more elegant way out of this mess, obtaining the same result (getting Bradley out of the clubhouse for the rest of the season). Chris DeLuca said in his article that is/was an option because Bradley refused to play. The better question is can the Cubs void his contract for his antics?
  11. Considering the injuries they had this year, an 87 win season will be most surprising. what is really frustrating tho is the poor or at best inconsistent play when the key players were not injured.
  12. For your sake, I hope the cake wasn't the best part of the 3.
  13. You could say the Cubs looked very scary last year too but look what happened to them in the playoffs. The Phillies sure did make a very good team even better tho.
  14. The article states that Towers is convinced the deal was nixed by Hendry because of the public's knowledge of the negotiations and the names being mentioned in the deal. It does not verify, from Hendry, that Hendry killed the deal simply because the public's knowledge and/or opinion of the deal got outa hand. I find it very hard to swallow that JH would have backed out of the deal solely because of the public's knowledge/opinion of the trade, and that the more likely reason was that Towers was asking for too much.
  15. They might be able to if the Bucs take Miles back in the deal and eat some of Sanchez's contract. But that's just wishful thinking, or is it?
  16. I vaguely remember hearing something about them thinking he plays SS lazily. He sure made a bang-bang play yesterday that was anything but lazy.
  17. As much as I'd love to have Yunel Escobar, he's not expensive contract-wise so I can't imagine they'd give him up for just prospects. We'll have to come up with some kind of a legit ML bat to give them and we're not exactly overflowing with them. Why are the Braves even considering trading Escobar? He has decent #s including hitting over .400 w/risp this year. No idea. I wouldn't trade him if I were them. A post in another thread (which I can't find now) said something about Cox being either frustrated or fed up with him. His line is .297/.360/.436/.796 and he has 43 rbi, 17 dbls and 7 hrs to go w/22 walks and only 30Ks in 273 abs. Does he have off field trouble? Do the Braves have another ss prospect ready to take over??

  19. The question is, what good offensive bat can we get this year? Especially if the Baker trade confirms that Hendry is committed to Fontenot at second base? There have been several names mentioned in threads/posts, some that realistically might be had in a trade that involved Wells. The Pirates have always been a good trade partner w/the Cubs and are already selling off pieces. F. Sanchez would be a good/smart target.
  20. I've been on the fence thru-out this thread seeing good points both for and against a Wells for Bell straight up trade, but after another fine performance by Wells last night, I'm in the camp that thinks that his current value, whether real or perceived, should be used to get the Cubs a good offensive bat rather than a reliever, no matter how good that reliever is.
  21. who da thunk when he was traded that Jason Marquis would be the 1st 10 game winner in the NL this year
  22. I can see that point. Things may improve in the free agency market in the next few months, but DeRosa won't get a long-term deal from anyone. He also doesn't have injury issues and won't be seeking a long-term, $14-18 million deal (like Hudson and Abreu/Dunn, respectively), so he's likely to be more attractive. Even still, I don't know if Hendry would offer arbitration with the intent of getting picks. That's a good point. Which begs two questions, what would DeRo likely get via arbi and is he worth it seeing how it would only be for 1 year?
  23. As I've posted before, I think Hendry is perfectly willing to ride out Ramirez' injury with current personnel and use his trade chips after assessing what the Cubs need and analyzing the moves made by other teams. The Cubs haven't hit diddly in the last month and are only 2 1/2 games back. If the Cards and/or the Brewers make a big move (Holliday, Peavy, etc.) and start to pull away, Hendry would be forced to pull off a big deal. Hendry's history has typically been more reactive instead of proactive, wouldn't you say??
