  1. I don't think it is a good idea, especially with a manager like Dusty, to have a rookie as your primary backup. The kids need playing time to develop, not sit on the bench and only get spot starts or be late inning replacements. If you have someone like Cedeno on the 25 man, he needs to start otherwise, leave him in Iowa where he can play every day and have someone like Neifi back up Nomar.
  2. BBT reported he has been traded to the Dodgers.
  3. Not necessarily. The fact that a trade was actually made says one of 2 things. He either cleared waivers and then the trade was made or Theo told Hendry Boston will claim him if and only if the Cubs pay part of his remaining salary. Hendry then countered with throw in a prospect and you got a deal.
  4. I used to be all for putting together a team and a good farm system so you can build a dynasty that wins year after year. However, how many teams have there been in the last 10 to 20 years that have built a dynasty and won several WS? Not many, if any. Yes the Yankees and Braves have been great franchises for many years but how many WS have they each won during their respective stretches of greatness? I want at least a WS appearance out of the Cubs and I don't want to wait another 45 years for them to do that cuz I will be 90 years old. The Cubs have a good nucleus of players that can bring them to the promised land. They are only about 3 or 4 good to great players from reaching that. They blew their best chance in 2003 banking on what they had and the performances the players were giving that year. The Trib and Hendry should have realized 2003 was THE year for the Cubs to finally win the WS and should have made a few moves late in the year to ensure that it would happen. Right now I feel the Cubs are perhaps a Johnny Damon, Brian Giles, a good starting pitcher, and one or 2 good bullpen arms shy of getting back to the post season. Yes Damon and Giles are on the wrong side of 30 but they have proven track records. Let Nomar go and let Cedeno play short. Let CPat go and have Pie play center between Damon and Giles. Resign Walker for 2nd. Make a trade for a starting pitcher and the bullpen arms. And if you have to make some deals in July, do it.
  5. OK then, how about Ray Tanner? He played in the bigs and now coaches the SC Gamecocks. Hasn't won a CWS yet but has had a great deal of success at SC.
  6. You are correct Vance. Players on the 40 man must clear waivers.
  7. I believe the Cubs will put him on waivers in hopes that some team will claim him thereby picking up the remainder of his current contract. If he clears waivers he can be traded. Even if some team claims him, Hendry can still try to work out a deal with the claiming team by threatening to pull him back. If he clears waivers, he can also become a FA.
  8. You are correct neely however, in the game that Lee tried to steal 3rd, IIRC the Cubs were up by several runs so they could make risky plays that would not normally be made in a closer game. They were losing by a run. my bad. then it was a stupid play by lee
  9. You are correct neely however, in the game that Lee tried to steal 3rd, IIRC the Cubs were up by several runs so they could make risky plays that would not normally be made in a closer game.
  10. But that can lead to deals in which teams "borrow" players just for the playoffs. In other words acquiring a player late in the season and then trading that player back to the same team after the season is over.
  11. The problem the Cubs face with trying to make a waiver deal is that it is unlikely any of the players on their 40 man roster will clear waivers so they can be traded. So the Cubs will most likely have to trade from those not on the 40 man roster.
  12. Doesn't work that way. Once you "pull him back" he cannot be traded. And if you pull him back and place him on waivers a second time, the second time has to be irrevocable waivers. The reason I suggested Hendry contact other teams BEFORE placing him on waivers is so a deal can be worked out ahead of time. If you simply place him on waivers and he is claimed, the claiming team does not "have to" work out a deal unless it really wants Hairston badly. If not, that team will have the upper hand in making a deal if the Cubs threaten to pull him back.
  13. What's to prevent Hendry from contacting the GMs for the teams who will have first crack at taking Hairston via the waiver process to see if any of them has interest in Hairston? I believe the answer to that is nothing. Hendry can work out a pre-waiver wire deal with any team who says it will take Hairston if he is placed on waivers, and the Cubs can get back some prospects from that team who don't have to be placed on waivers.
  14. With all this talk about the Mets being interested in Soriano too, I'm suddenly envisioning a major coup by Hendry acquiring not only Soriano but also either Cliff Floyd or Mike Cameron. With the acquision of Gerut and the emergence of Murton, the Cubs suddenly have a surplus of outfielders as well as pitching to deal from. The Mets are one of those bubble teams still trying to figure out if they are going to go for it or work on the future. They are close enough to the WC that I beleive they will go for it and in doing so could make a desperation move or two. OK guys, you figure the deals to bring both Soriano and either Floyd or Cameron to the Cubs. And if you can find a reliever too, do it.
  15. I agree. The Twins need a 2nd baseman since Boone is not panning out. If the Cubs acquire Soriano, who would we want from them if we deal them either Hairston, Walker, or Soriano (or Neifi)?
  16. That's a pretty bold prediction considering 3 out of the top 5 teams vying for the WC are in the East.8
  17. The Cubs do not have a favorable schedule the rest of the way. IIRC, 60% of the games they have left are against teams with over a .500 w/l record including 14 more games against St. Louis and several more against Houston.
  18. If it does not end up being Kearns, then I agree with Outshined in that IF a significant trade is made, it will be with a team that has not been discussed extensively. It will come out of nowhere and will surprise us. I am going out on a limb and predict that it will be a trade with Seattle that involves Randy Winn or Arizona for Gonzalez.
  19. I'm to the point where I don't trust KW any longer. IMO, he is not being completely up front with the extent of his pain/injuries and may be trying to play through his pain.
  20. Anyone else have the feeling we are going to end up with Willy Mo? And can someone please tell me what does IIRC mean?
  21. Hey DJAXX, have you heard the DJAXX might be moving? Article in our local paper yesterday said they have the lowest attendance out of any other minor league team and may be looking for a new location. Almost wet my pants when I read that Columbia might be their new home
  22. I posed this same question about 2 weeks ago and no one responded.':?'
