I think the difference between Baez and Swanson is a little closer than you think or at least near enough to not really matter. The comparison occurred to me last night watching Swanson flail away. Baez has at least shown some signs of life recently, 12 for 36 over the last week and a half or so. Of course that comes without a single walk in over a month. LOL. But not the comparison you want to be meaningful in any case.

Let's not forget LaTroy Hawkins. Lights out as a set-up man not so much as a closer. I remember posters insisting he was a better than average closer as he blew save after save.

So begins the tale how PCA's MLB career takes hold because of a bunt call being taken off after obscenely wild pitch. Somewhere 7 years in the future a tweed jacket and a fistful of Ford brochures disappear into the ether only to be replaced with a well worn glove and a wall full of silver slugger awards.

Is there a way to break down the count of each pitch? If his 1st pitches to each batter is a K it's a different scenario to the first being a B to each batter. In the first scenario maybe the latter pitches are purposely chase pitches whereas in the second he presumably would still be trying to throw strikes and still missing; swinging the outlook pendulum to the luck side of things.

Well it wasn't though. You can certainly argue the process in making the decision was valid - but that doesn't mean ultimately it was the right decision. Part of the reason Counsell is getting $8 million is expectation that he can make a nuanced decision. He's certainly not going to get them all right but he can be criticized when he gets it wrong. Anybody can pull a pitcher when they are getting pounded - Wicks was shutting down a high (the highest?) octane offense - giving him 5 more pitches to close it out rather than hoping the pitcher you are bring in is "on" today also isn't unreasonable.

Were Freemen and Betts good match ups? I get it, I'm not saying it's an indefensible move but he just struck out two of the better hitters baseball, the bullpen is short - 5 more pitches to get out of the inning rather than bring in a new pitcher cold with runners on? Sure live by the sword and die by the sword.

Would it have been horrendouser than the result. He just struckout Betts and Freeman. Sometimes you just got let a pitcher pitch.
