  1. I would have posted (and I may have) the exact thing regarding Devers. Both Strasburg and Judge had already been with their teams long-term, so not really the same situation. It didn't cost them anything. The point is the Cubs have zero indication Soto has any interest in signing an extension and will have to give up significant prospects to find out. I'm certainly not going to cry if they end up with Soto.
  2. I know this is a Morel thread but I'm not thinking that the trade would be to accommodate Morel first and foremost. I think Morel may allow them to contemplate trading Nico in the right deal. SD comes along and says they want Nico, Triantos and Drew Gray for Soto. Might not fit for SD in the real world but you get the idea.
  3. IMO I just don't think this is true. He's in the drivers seat he's going to go where he wants. In all likelihood it can't hurt but are you willing to waste the prospects to find out he has no interest in signing an extension. If it all it takes is Morel - and I want to keep Morel - then I think you have to do it but I'm not huge on the idea of trading a boatload of prospects on the hopes of him re-signing a contract that an be expressed as a factor of a Billion Dollars.
  4. In light of the Counsell signing I contemplated what the next out of left field move could be and trading Nico bubbled to the top. To be absolutely clear I am not advocating for him to be traded. If I squint I can see the argument that the power is what we've seen; the SBs could - as they can - quickly fade; the lack of patience could lead to an increased exploitation by pitchers resulting in a drop in BA/OBP to the point that he's not someone that's going to be signed to a big contract when the time comes so why not strike when value is high.
  5. Not a single mention of Jared Young being claimed by the Cardinals??
  6. I'm not talking about dumping a manager and then searching for a new one. Essentially agreeing to hire a new manager before firing the existing one. I assume both Renteria and Ross would have continued on if deals had fallen through.
  7. So twice in recent history the Cubs have dumped the existing manager - that in both cases were expected to continue their tenure - when a better manager became available. Are there other instances of this happening with other teams - I can't recall any but I assume I wasn't paying close enough attention.
  8. Well Kiermaier helped a bit as well. Varsho just couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. Toronto media brings up that trade everyday. They were convinced that Moreno or Gurriell were going to win WS MVP so they were at least spared that. The team will be better served with Varsho in CF and somebody who can hit in LF next year.
  9. LOL at Moreno winning a GG but not Daulton Varsho. BJ fans getting salt kicked in their eyes all offseason.
  10. Then move him to LF or RF - is Bogaerts going to be playing SS at 37-41?
  11. Nonsense, Give him a Dawson check and stop pussyfooting around. Cubs need thunder in the line up - he's already done it in a Cubs uniform, he's 28, he has real positional flexibility, he's not going to cost any prospects and I believe he ages well. Lets not overthink everything.
  12. Tubby players not named Ruth don't age well. #tradeKirknow
  13. About to hop into the car and listen to the the Toronto media for a half hour or so - it's going to be entertaining,
  14. Does it seem like the Brewers are trying to give this game to the Cubs
  15. Dansby wanted no part of PWizzy on that play.
  16. On the Arizona play why is Gomes reaching over the plate to apply the tag? Carrol has to get to the plate - if he just puts his glove on the plate Carrol is out.
  17. Somewhat related fun fact Bill Buckner had 15 career bWAR over a 22 year career.
  18. 2023 Jason Heyward .283 .357 .508 .866 He's only stealing bases at a 50% clip though, so...
  19. Does anybody remember - maybe 3 or 4 years ago?? - on the TV broadcasts they'd show stats for catches/plays in the outfield. i.e LF ran 37 feet to make catch - ball with that protectory/velocity is a hit 87% of the time. I think they'd even compare ideal route vs actual route taken. Anybody remember that? Anybody know why they stopped - I always found those pretty interesting.
  20. Yup I'm all in on Bellinger. he will be the karmic payback for Heyward. If the Padres can sign Bogarts - name alone tells you the contract isn't going to age well - into his 40's Cubs can sign Bellinger who can slide over to RF and then in to 1B as he ages into his late 30's.
  21. The Natural, Field of Dreams, The Rookie was decent enough and Pride of the Yankees and Bang The Drum Slowly if you want to go old school. I also remember liking The Stratton Story but I was pretty young when I saw it.
