  1. I'd take Suppan in a heartbeat over Lilly/Meche. But since it looks like the Cubs are close to Meche, if you believe Seattle, then the Cubs had better hope that one of Guzman/Prior/Miller steps their game up BIG time, or the Cubs, once again will have an mediocre, yet expensive, rotation.
  2. Exactly. If the Cubs lose at on both Lilly and Meche, the Cubs should focus on trying to get Jason Jennings, Jake Westbrook, and perhaps even Joe Blanton. So how again was signing Soriano going to make the Cubs an attractive spot for FA? I mean Lilly prefers to pitch in NY or the West Coast (so the Cubs would be "last choice" for Lilly), Jason Schmidt stays in Cali and will sign with LA (he won't sign with the Cards) and Gil Meche is close to signing a deal in Toronto. I know I should be happy that these mediocre pitchers are signing elsewhere (excluding Schmidt), but wasn't signing Soriano suppose to make the Cubs an attractive place to sign?
  3. LaRouche for Gonzalez? Good move for both teams. Braves get their closer (with a nice set up man in Soriano) and the Pirates get a young first baseman to help protect Jason Bay. But don't look know but...the Pirates have Bay/Castillo/Sanchez/Paulino, and if the Gonzalez for LaRouche deal happens, the Pirates are building a very nice young stable of hitters.
  4. The possibility of having "The Church of Baseball" (thx Bull Durham) at Wrigley Field, is most definately an intriguing possibility.
  5. Heck, I'd give em Sean Hill, Felix Patterson, and Donnie Marshall (go Malph!) for Church. j/k :P Heck, I'd thrown in Brian Pawelek, and Mark Dopirak, if they want.
  6. And the Cubs have just as much as being out of the race with Lilly and/or Meche. The difference, the Cubs wouldn't have the crappy contracts in the rotations, and the Cubs would be given guys like Gallagher/Veal/Guzman/Marmol a chance to prove they belong. I didn't say make a trade, I say wait till the deadline (when better pitchers are available) before deciding the rotation needs upgrade. Young, cheap talented pitchers are BETTER then overpaid, mediocre talented pitchers.
  7. gee goony, i'm flattered  on a more serious note, I'd take Meche Awww...get a room.... 8-) just kidding. Meche is more talented, and Lilly is less crappy. I'd take Angel Guzman and Sean Marshall. who's going to pitch the 200 innings that those two miss this year? I rather the Cubs keep the money, and wait till the deadline, instead of getting impatient and overpaying for medocre talent.
  8. gee goony, i'm flattered  on a more serious note, I'd take Meche Awww...get a room.... 8-) just kidding. Meche is more talented, and Lilly is less crappy. I'd take Angel Guzman and Sean Marshall.
  9. Uhm....HUh?!?! I thought it was official. Wishful thinking on the Cards part?
  10. But due to a "offensive blackout" that last the whole season in LA, Jason Schmidt finished the 2007 season witha 9-14 record. An era that apprach low 4, and a whip into the 1.30.
  11. Theres no one really " just south" of us besides St Louis.. But who? Seeing as there are several "similar" statements, I decide to retract my statement, seeing as Primetime already gotten smack a few times.
  12. Chris Carpenter! Try closer to home.
  13. from what was said on sports central yesterday, the sox will want WAY more than that for either vasquez or garcia. apparently at this point williams is asking quite alot for any of his starters. May want, and will get are two different animals. Everybody knows he wants to move one of his starters, and get McCarthy into the rotation, so Williams can't get picky. Besides, Linebrink, and maybe a solid prospect would be enough of a return for Garcia or Vazquez.
  14. Carl Pavano is the alias of Mark Prior, so no thank you, we've already got our DL talented starter. And Wright is NO LONGER a Yankee, he was traded to Baltimore---you guess it, considering the O's offseason-----for a reliever name Britton. At this point, I'd rather talk the Braves about Hudson.
  15. I don't. I think the focus is Lilly and Meche, like we've been hearing all along. Zito will be choosing between the Mets for 5/75 and the Rangers for 6/100. I think he's going to get either Lilly or Meche not both. Meche is a backup to Lilly. Then Hendry will try like hell to pry another starter from a team. Which is a much better idea. I'll settle for Lilly, but Meche is a mess. Sign Lilly and try to trade for Westbrook, Penny or Jennings. Sounds good to me. A big no for Meche. Let KC have him If you read the SunTimes articles, it made it sounds like the Cubs were planning to sign both Lilly AND Meche. Take if for what it's worth.
  16. ARod's agent told the Yankees that the NTC wouldn't be waived. ARod is staying in NY. Awww, man....No Andy Roddick for the 2007 season, dang it, you sure know how to break a guy's spirit.
  17. About the article that says the Dodgers beat out the Cards and Seattle, and made no mention of the Cubs: I think the reason for this is that Hendry prolly knew sometime yesterday where Schmidt was heading, and seeing as he couldn't convince Schmidt to come to Chicago, he prolly pulled his offer. That's the only thing I can think of. Bit one thing for sure is this....Schmidt prolly had the Dodgers (there offense is going to be really bad next yr, btw) as his preferred choice, and even with the "World Champs (and I am using that term loosely) making a last minute bid, couldn't change his mind. The fact is, the Cubs and perhaps the Cards were used, it happens.
  18. The White Sox have a surplus of starters (and wants to move one of them to move McCarthy into the rotation), and the Cubs have enough decent spare parts to make a trade happen. How about: Cubs get: Freddy Garcia (or Vazquez) White Sox get: Scott Linebrink Padres get: Jacques Jones/Rule 5 prospect like Fontenot or Fox Cubs get a starter, the Padres address their hole in LF, and the White Sox opens up a spot in the rotation for McCarthy, and recieves some solid bullpen help. I understand a prospect here and there to even out the trade, but that is the jist. Not a rumor, just me thinking out loud.
  19. So would everybody else, but Schmidt and Batista will cost $5M per year more than Meche and Lilly. I'm sure if the Cubs don't get Schmidt, that it won't be because they don't think he's a good pitcher. Unfortunately, (and I hope they are wrong) the SunTimes is making is sound like the Cubs will eventually sign Meche AND Lilly. Which coupled with not signing Schmidt, would be baseball's double whammy.
  20. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/askba/262950.html You see what's mess up? The Cubs get the first pick of the Supplement Rd (between 1st and 2nd) for losing Juan Pierre, whereas the Nats get the 2nd pick of the Sup rd for losing Soriano. Man is that mess up.
  21. The only way the Cards land Schmidt over the Cubs is if he hopes that benefitting from Ecksteins scrappy grittiness is worth the paycut.[/quote] I thought that was the reason why the Cubs brought in Mark DeRosa, or was that Theriot's job? I just don't see how the Cards can outbid the Cubs for Schmidt. My guess is...Schmidt goes to Seattle, and St. Lou re-signs Suppan.
  22. Oh Lord Same here. 5 yrs $55 million for TED FRIGGIN' LILLY? The Cubs better 'roid up on Lilly and get him to pitch like Carpenter, if they signed him to that deal. I can barely see signing him to a 3 yr $33 mill, but 2 more yrs, and 22 mill, HECKS no.
  23. Angel Guzman? :) Yeah, but Guzman doesn't have his experience. Seriously, from the look of those highlights I wonder why the guy only won 11 last year. He really has great stuff from the llok of them. So, Guzman doesn't have the "experience" to be a talented, yet crappy pitcher, is your reason to go after Meche? Meche would be fine if the deal is 2 yrs say $10 mill (5 per), but $40 mill over 4 yrs...IS NOT IDEAL for NEW AJ BURNETT. And yes, I'd prefer Guzman to Meche, IN A HEARTBEAT.
