  1. You're asking for Cubs fans to be "positive"? You're not asking for too much out of Cubs fans.
  2. Not according to Olney (source was his ESPN radio appearance, BTW). This money comes from divesting themselves of Thomas and Everett, leaving $ for Konerko if he chooses to come back. Thome appears to be headed to DH-land. Nice job by Kenny Williams. This is a nice move only if: 1: Thome can remain relatively healthy. 2: Brian Anderson (the kid they brought up late in the season) plays as well as Kenny Williams hopes. 3: Paul Konerko re-signs. You can't trust Thome to be healthy (especially with the back) at this stage of his career, plus he is 35 yrs old. If they don't re-sign Konerko (it's awfully tempting of Konerko to stay knowing that he has a bonafid hitter watching his back), it would be the end of the season when Thome injuries himself. Cause who would be the "backup" at 1st? Dye, Bourchard, Gload? The White Sox would almost have to re-sign Konerko.
  3. IF KW is in the bullpen next yr, then it would have been a LONG yr.
  4. But, dude, Baker has lead the Cubs to a back-to-back winning seasons....that has to count for something....right?
  5. Juan Encarnacion, Jock Jones, or Jeromy Burnitz in RF in 2006? Discuss.
  6. As long as the guy in the Cubs uniform from the bullpen, can get the OUTS consistantly, I have no beef. It's when they struggle, I have a beef with.
  7. Yes, he is. Dude got on base 68 times in 78 games and stole 20 bases in 25 attempts. He's fast. But its not like he is 21 anymore. He'll be 25 in April and has just 95 games in the big leagues. He has yet to translate his great OBP numbers from the minors to the majors (.316 career OBP), but that number will likely improve. What won't improve is his weak arm in CF. Unless he can be had on the cheap, I think the Cubs can do better. The Cubs have talked about Juan Pierre, who I consider have the weakest arm in pro baseball, PERIOD. I would trade for Gauthright before Pierre, who I do like.
  8. Well, keep wondering. Considering Giles is playing phone tag with the Yankees of ALL teams, and the Cards seemingly pull out of negotiations mybest guess is Giles stays in S.D., at worst he stays in Cali and plays for one of the tw LA teams. Now Abreu 8) and down with that idea. Make it so, Ensign Hendry.
  9. rumor still Good, then I can still hope it doesn't happen. I'd rather have Dotel than two Howry's. Well, vance, I suggest you get over that disappointment, quickly, cause Dotel isn't coming here (perhaps Baltimore?) and I doubt Howry gets any better deal then what the Cubs alledgely offered him. My guess is...the Cubs AND Howry are working out the small details on the contracts, ie incentives, NTC (or minimal NTC), etc... It wouldn't surprise me if Howry signs later tonight.
  10. I am not at all high on Huff. If we thought Sosa was bad defensively in RF, Huff makes Sosa look like Andruw Jones. I don't see the Cubs getting a big bat for RF, at least not this yr, even tho it is a weakness. I know this is going to anger some people but, if the Cubs can land Furcal (or Lugo) and/or Pierre, I could definately see the Cubs bring back Burnitz for another yr.
  11. That's what I am waiting for. You know Steinbrenner is  :x right now. And you know Steinbrenner won't allow Boston to have a "moment in the sun". And regardless of the newfound power Cashman seems to have, I suspect either Brian Giles, Johnny Damon, or AJ Burnett will be a Yankee within 48 hours.
  12. I don't care too much about having a statisical debate, to me that is a waste of time and effort, what I see is both Eyre and Howry are solid additons to a bullpen that the rotation would have love to lynched last yr. Overpaid, yes. Overvalued, no. I like the fact that Eyre and possibly Howry are going to be Cubs, and not Astro or the Cards.
  13. First Eyre, now Howry (alledgely)? Who's next? Trading for Keith Foulke? I hear Matt Karchner, Roberto Hernandez, Kelly Wunsch, and Shingo Takatsu are available. If we are going to target ex-White Sox relievers, we might as well go all out. Ok, ok, ok, don't take my advice. I do believe both Eyre and Howry will be at-worst solid for two yrs, in which the Cubs could trade both by June/July of their free agency yr.
  14. Given the right lineup, and the right personnel behind him, I think he can. That why I think it would be a CAREER yr. But come on, deep down, you love to see ARam put up those numbers, because you know if ARam is putting up those numbers....the Cubs are kicking butt.
  15. Some Cubs notes from Ken Rosenthals: Wouldn't be surprise if Javy Vasquez ends up with the Cubs, the Cards, or the Indians. Abreu to the Cubs or Mariners is something he prolly stole from this board. Lee is eyeing Konerko new "contract" as the starting off point for his negotiations. Which he had better numbers this yr, and over the career. http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=37083
  16. So Beckett is the next Ismael Valdez? No thank you. Beckett is a talent, but is too _____ for my liking. Besides we already have Kerry Wood, why would need his clone?
  17. Article mentions that Furcal is likely to stay with Atlanta. Now, if we miss out on Pierre and Furcal... ? #-o ](*,) Does the SunTimes even have a columnist that is unbiased? La Duca would help write that story, is a White Sox fan. So of course, he going to say "But the White Sox have the better goods to lock up Pierre," or "Though the Cubs are expected to be Furcal's second choice, indications are strong he will return to the Atlanta Braves," that's because it was written by a White Sox fan disguised as a columnist, instead of an unbiased columnist. And I seriously doubt he has "heard sources" that says Furcal is going back to Atl. My guess is...because the Braves are on a tighter fical lease, they will be target Hoffman (remember Kolb and Resitma bombed last yr) and perhaps Lugo. If not they have cheaper options at SS, Pena, Jr...Betemit, etc. The Braves have said they make retaining Furcal a "priority" is nothing more then a PR move to help soften theblow of losing Furcal.
  18. Something tells me...this Murton kid will be right there with Bay. Maybe not much with the power, but all-around skills. I like Jason Bay, and I would trade Scott Rolen, Anthony Reyes, and Yadier Molina (cause Pujols would be overpaying) for Bay....and the Cards get Todd Walker, Jose Macias, and Mark Redman. That's a fair trade.
  19. I knew there was that if Rothschild wasn't picked up, the he would replace Larry as PC, but we won't know now.
  20. If the breakdown of Eyre contract has been posted, then I apologize, but the bolded area gave me  ](*,) . When does a solid, but unspectular reliever get a "no-trade clause?" Something tells me, the Cubs were the only team to even offer a no trade clause.
  21. Abreu was a Cubs.....Winston Abreu that is....
  22. And why does people assumes that Giles would even consider the Cubs? Have people ever thought that Hendry may have express interests in Giles, but his agent inform the Cubs, that he isn't interested in going to the Cubs, or even the Cards? Maybe Giles was Hendry's 1st choice, but I get the feeling that Giles is going to stay in Cali (maybe the Dodgers?Angels?) unless the Cards/Cubs offer TOO MUCH for Giles.
  23. Here's what is scary about Eyre: ERAs in 2000, 2002, 2004: 6.63, 4.46, 4.10 ERAs in 2001, 2003, 2005: 3.45, 3.32, 2.63 Last I looked, 2006 is considered an even numbered year. But to be fair....he's gotten a little (chicken) better each of the even yrs. I don't know if I would give him 3 yrs, or ore then $2.5 mill per, but anything to keep Bartosh from being an option, I consider a solid move.
