  1. I think without Cutler, Lovie might have been fired a few years ago. #coachsaver Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. I hope we get both as long as neither needs a 40 man spot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. Either the Bulls are willing to pay the tax or a Rip trade is coming. Either of those things are okay with me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. Anyone else hear anything about the NFL possibly banning cut blocking, that would render zone blocking a lot less effective? I feel like I read something, but it may well may have been from a non legit site like BR. If theres any truth to that, it'd be the only reason to shy away from the Shanahan/zone blocking, coaching tree. Otherwise I'm game for it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. If we wait a little longer on Diaz he won't count against our IFA budget right? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Its really an ideal situation. Unlike trying to bring in an up and coming offensive mind as OC who would just be poached after a year or so, no one will ever hire Marinelli as head coach again. So get your head coach be a primarily offensive mind. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. Who has Clements developed other than Rodgers? Serious question, I honestly don't know who else he's developed. He's clearly done a very good job with Rodgers, but if he's it, I'm not sure I'd assume Clements can develop any QB. That said, I'm not sure Cutler needs development as much as he needs an offensive line - get him that and he'll probably immediately become 10x better. Elvis Grbac, Kordell Stewart, and Tommy Maddox all reached Pro Bowls under his tutelage(from 2000-2002). Not sure you can call that development per se, as though guys weren't model QBs outside of those years they had success, but it means something I guess. Looks like he got decent production out of Kelly Holcomb in Buffalo as OC in 2005 as well. Hope he is more than just a really good QB coach though. He only has three years of OC experience to judge him on. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. Personally, I'm not super keen on college coaches coming to the NFL. I know some have worked out recently, but I can't get over that mindset. I'm not super keen on it if they are soley college coaches. If they have history in the NFL as an assistant coach I don't mind it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. I read the Redskins weren't going to allow their assistants to. And I don't think teams generally pick and choose. Packers have been in the playoffs a lot. Whats the precedence for them in the past? I know the blocked Clements before but that was just for O coordinator and I can't recall if they were out or not. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. As long as they're still in the playoffs we do, right? Just another reason to root for a quick Packers exit. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Don't think any head coaching retreads interest me. I'm all for a upcoming OC. Clements, Shannahan come to mind. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. Also that deal helps with some of our 40 man crunch, so thats nice I guess. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. I'd do it, but I'd feel a little better if half our starting pitcher candidates weren't on one year deals. Maybe they don't view Wood as a SP so its a moot point, but he's certainly nice to have to fill in the back of the rotation cheap next year if needed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. Well if Seattle beats our offer by even just a little I can't see why we would land him, unless he values league/division consistencey. But that cant be worth much, so we really have to at least match if we want a shot, with the above factor giving us an edge as a tie breaker. Years and AAV obviously matter but I tentatively would like it even though i have my doubts about the value of his defense. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. Further to the above, Miritic's buyout is constant, but you can try and pray for a tanking euro that would shrink the size of the usd buyout. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. Buyout limit used to be 500k I think. There's something in the new CBA about it going up ~250k every year for a few years. Not sure if thats in general or for each year a player is unsigned. You're limited to rookie scale the first two years. After that you lose the rookie exception and you sign with whatever cap space or other exceptions you have, for instance the MLE. At most we'll probably have the mini MLE at that time and maybe a million towards a buyout. I think his buyout does go down each year, which is the good thing and helps. The best case scenario is he can negotiate a change to the buyout, either to spread it out or reduce it. To also entice him, we probably have to do a two year deal. So if he does come over just prepare for another potential Asik scenario once its time to match. Edit to the above: Buyout only goes up 25k so essentially useless. We're talking 600k at the most. Now the Bulls can still pay the full buyout, it just goes against the cap. And we'd have to wait 3 years not 2, to no longer be bound by the rookie pay scale, which we need to do to give him an offer enticing enough, considering the buyout and his rookie scale amount. 17. I really wonder if it could make sense to piggy back some of these guys. Almost half our staff could have some durability/longevity issues. And we are likely to waste one bullpen spot on that rule 5 pick. Is this crazy talk? If we get Jackson, him and Smardzija can be on a normal rotation and expect 200 innings. Garza if healthy can. Then between any time Garza misses and the bottom of the rotation you piggy back Feldman, Baker, Wood, and Villanueva. You have Vizcaino ready by mid year maybe as well. 18. Me too Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. Cool. There just have to be a few trades on the way. Garza and/or Marmol are gone for non 40 man roster players. Plus a few cuts to fringy guys. Whats our total overage right now? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. The name of my K-8 school apparently meant mosquito in Polish or something. Their nickname used to be the Mosquitos. So they were essentially the Misquito Misquitos. Its a good name. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. My point about the 11m isn't that they tried. They didn't try. But they were content to let that money sit there and do poorly. I agree other positions have big money tied up to, although a lot of those positions are at least giving is advantages on the field. Regarding those examples of backup QBs, those teams actually are much more reliant on their QBs to the point where the argument does hold a little bit more weight. The Bears aren't that team with a top 5 QB and good offensive system. Part of that is because Jay isn't a top 5 QB. God knows why we continue to patch the offense with retread and familiar faces. That would help a lot and would let you get away with a lesser QB. But given the situation that Tice was our OC i sure wanted a reliable QB. Even discounting the relative danger the OL puts Cutler in, he puts himself at risk of injury himself. Taking what Angelo left behind there isn't an OL you could have assembled, with Cambells 3.5 M or not, that would have left me feeling we wouldn't need a competent backup at some point. Maybe Cambell just sucks now but history indicated he was a pretty reliable bet to step in and hold the offense together when Jay went down. It didn't happen. Bad talent eval, bad offense or both contributed to this. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. QB is important. Backup is part of that. 11M+ on our top 3 paid OL and zero good starts. We do have a beater car except we are somehow making payments on it like its a slightly used Toyota. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. Fine I can't single out the position either because its a freaking important position. And the "if Cutler goes out it doesn't matter" arguement is crap. Yes if Cutler goes out for the year it doesn't matter, but I'm more worried about possibly staying afloat for a week or two because going into the year, it was pretty strong chance our playoff odds could be decided by a game. And going on 3 years now Cutler has missed bits and pieces of time. Part of that is our line, but Cutler doesn't protect himself eithet. I guess we could have saved ourselves about 1m with neckbeard, but beyond that we weren't going to solve backup qb on the cheap for 2012. And I'll maintain its importance. More worried about the 11m on our top 3 lineman who gave us zero good starts, the 2.2m we paid for special teamers that provided a marginal upgrade over near minimum players, and over overpriced RB platoon in a passing league. At worst the possible 1m overpay for QB is on the same level of those, but I'd say not as bad. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. NFL salaries are a bit tricky obviously. Cap hits will matter and stuff, but here's some dead weight that isn't Cambell. Not sure what all the cap implications of cutting these guys would have been, but here's some other deadweight salary to start the year. Chris Williams 4.62m Spencer 3.75m Garza 2.7m (Starting with the position where the weaknesses are might be a good spot to start) Castanzo 1m (Sorry but we get fringe guys to produce at a high level on s.t all the time at league min.) Matt Spaeth 2.2m (For a blocking TE?) Idonije 2.5m (I like Izzy, but with the benefit of hindsight with the way Wotton has came on, we could have replaced Izzy with a lower salaried player Matt Forte and Bush 8.8m combined (A lot to be spending on the RB position and not get elite production) I just can't single out Cambell out of all those. Especially since I think he is better than what he did this year in our crap offense. I'm all for spendind cheap on areas, but at QB you have to develop that cheap production, which can't be done in an offseason. Only so much Emery could have done with the way we've mismanaged the roster up to now. The O-Line troubles are due to a series of bad devisions going years back . Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  25. I'm not criticizing Campbell. I'm criticizing the stupidity of the plan that said, "hey let's ignore the starting line that plays every down when the team is on offense and rather waste millions on a backup QB who if he plays, the team is doomed anyway." Did Cambell really effect our ability to improve the line though? I'm not sure of what deals were signed of comparable value that would have netted a good OL. And the Bears weren't right up against the cap were they? Theres plenty of places you can find dollars if you needed to. I'm not placing our OL troubles on allocating too much to QB. It's its own problem that could have been addressed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
