    He made the putback game winner against Mizzou last year after a bogus traveling call[/still bitter] From what I can remember, Johnson is a good player, who can shoot inside the line.

    I agree about Tech. They're going to be good enough to beat anyone on any day, but I haven't seen anything from them that would lead me to believe they can play defense consistently enough to challenge for the Conference title(of course, you could've said the same thing about Mizzou before last season). As far as Mizzou goes, they don't draw the toughest part of the south(Texas, Baylor, OSU), but they still have 3 non-home games against ranked teams(@Texas, Kansas and Illinois at neutral sites), plus they haven't won in Lincoln since we landed on the moon or something. They've still got to be favorites for the North though, as they didn't lose much from the best team last year, and their best competition both have rough schedules(KU plays Texas, OU, and Texas Tech; Colorado has a brutal non-con, and has to travel to KU and Mizzou).

    If they'd send him to Iowa (if they can) to stretch him out, I wouldn't at all mind seeing him as the long man out of the pen, provided the keep him as the long man this time and not as a LOOGY. He's talking about Lieber, not Marshall.

    The Cardinals have a shot at the wild card, especially being in the lead currently. However, when you look down the roster, they don't compare to their competitors. Carpenter and Wainwright are both currently injured, Carpenter is questionable to even pitch in 2008, and if he does there's a strong likelihood he won't be at his best. Latest news is that Wainwright will be out until August. The Dodgers(Billingsley, Kuroda, Lowe, Kershaw) and Braves(Hudson, Jurrjens, Campillo, Reyes/Glavine) have a better rotation, and the Mets(Santana, Maine) and Brewers(Sheets, Suppan) are better at the top of the rotation. Pujols is the best player in the game, but Ludwick and Ankiel are not much after him. Ankiel has a flawed approach and has about a .740 OPS since April. Ludwick outhit anything he's ever done, and has fallen off to a .737 OPS in June. Glaus is a quality player, but not spectacular. The Brewers with Fielder, Braun, Hart, and Cameron are more formidable, as are the Braves(Jones, Teixeira, McCann, Johnson), and the Mets(Wright, Beltran, Reyes, Church) and Marlins(Ramirez, Uggla, Cantu, Hermida) are similar. The Cards could still make the playoffs, but it won't be because their talent is the class of the wild card contenders.

    Makes the most sense - Hoff and Ward are pretty redundant. Yeah, who needs a pair of lefty power bats when you can have Ronny Cedeno. Didn't we just come to the conclusion that Cedeno was out of options, or did someone take that part of the thread off? Yes, he's out of options. Also, we'd have 2 guys with no defensive position on the team, no backup SS, and only Johnson/Murton and Blanco from the right side on the bench. There's no need for Hoffpauir with Ward on the team, especially since Fontenot is a capable second LH pinch hitter

    You've gotta pinch hit for Edmonds there. Lefties make him look stupid. Even if you want to say Edmonds hit a HR off one on Saturday, Murton was 2 for 3 against them in his previous 2 appearances. It's the right move. Blanco for Patterson, I'm not so sure about. I see the logic(Blanco's splits, Sherrill's splits, Patterson with no ABs v. LHP thus far), but I would've let Eric hit. Blanco had one at bat since the Tampa series, and Patterson had been swinging a hot bat with good plate discipline(plus he OPSed .910 against LHP in Iowa this year).

    I'm not sure I'd make that trade off, and Pie being an outstanding defender while Patterson is below average makes it easier. I'd probably take Pie with a .300/.400 OBP/SLG over Patterson hitting .350/.400. b/c Pie projects to be better or you mean over the long term you'd take Pie at those #s over Patterson at those #s? I'm having a hard time seeing Pie's defense make up for an extra 50 points of OBP (with equal SLG) esp in Wrigley. A little of both. I don't think Pie's defensive advantage over Patterson can be overstated, it's probably 20 runs over the course of the season(yes I realize the irony of that compound sentence). But yes, the fact that Pie is younger and hit better at high levels than Patterson also gives hope that he'll be at least equal offensively at the MLB level.

    He definitely wasn't picking up Sherrill's slider, although if the ump had called that fastball that was a foot outside ball 2, he may not have bit on the sliders(since if they were fastballs they would've been in that spot a foot outside).

A very nice outing for his first AAA start, especially in the hitters haven that is Albuquerque.

    What do you suggest? Letting a fifteen year veteran who has hit 3 homers in the last 3 games bat. I don't care if the pitcher is a lefty. You should care, LHP make Edmonds weep. He has a .493 OPS against them this year.

I'm never sure how to value defense. It's sort of an intangible, and we really don't know how bad/good Patterson would be as a CF. We just know he's not great at 2b. Of Patterson and Pie, I wonder who has more value in the eyes of other teams? I'd probably trade whichever one would get me the frontline starter we need in any case. There's a lot of different metrics out there. UZR, RZR(which you can find at hardball times), PMR, and more that are PBP based. Pie routinely comes out as saving a ton of runs defensively, especially for his brief time in the majors. No, I meant a .400 SLG for Pie. He's really as good as it gets defensively, enough to make up for that OBP discrepancy. That said, if trading Patterson gets Randy Wolf, and Pie gets Burnett/Harden/Sabathia, it's a much different decision. What stats are good measures of defense and how do you compare them with offensive stats, or is it simply a matter of judgement? I ask because I'm curious. You guys know a lot more about stats than I do so maybe I'm missing something.
