    They rushed him through rehab so he can throw 5 innings at the major league level and try to save their season. None of their starters go more than 5 innings anymore.

    With the organization's unwillingness to play Pie enough to get a read on his ability at the MLB level, and the payroll hindrances we'll probably face, our best bet may be to trade for a CF or RF who is either too expensive for their current team, underperforming but has reason to think they'll improve, or both. The idea is that you get someone who produces decently for a CF with the potential for more, even if it's not a CF. Players in this category could include: Carlos Beltran, David DeJesus, Mark Teahen, Jeremy Hermida, Fred Lewis, Andre Ethier, Chris Young, Carl Crawford, and Lastings Milledge.

    Hopefully Coleman can keep that K/BB going in Peoria. He and Jackson could go a long way to easing my disappointment with Hernandez and Rhee.

    Hanley's contract isn't as affordable as I remember, Florida will probably want out of it eventually. If we were to try for it, Theriot, Pie, Castillo, Vitters, Marshall? That's quite a haul, although Hanely will definitely demand quite a haul.

    Florida is 6th in the NL in runs. It's not the best offense in the league, but they have several very good hitters, it's not as if they're the Padres or whatever AAA affiliate they're calling the Padres these days.

    14th rounder Dan McDaniel has done a fine job in the Boise pen. 13.1 IP, 4 H(3 1B, 1 2B), 0 R, 22/5 K/BB. He'll be 20 years old all season.

    Samardzija doesn't really have a clear path to the rotation. Zambrano, Harden, Lilly, Marquis, Dempster, Hill, Marshall, and Gaudin are all possibilities for next year's rotation. In that sense, treating him like Chamberlain and letting him be a fireman until the opportunity presents itself isn't really that bad. On the other hand, Samardzija is very raw, especially as a starter. There's going to be a marked difference in what Samardzija looks like as a starter in 2009 if he stays a starter now or if he stays in the MLB pen. Given the big league club's predicament right now, I'd let him continue to pitch in relief as long as he's effective and used in an important role. If he's going to get shelled, or only pitch in the 6th or 7th innings of a ballgame, let him start in Iowa. If he's going to be used like he was today, then keep him around and let him start 2009 ST as a starter trying to earn a rotation spot.

    The thing about Quality Starts is that no one thinks to use the term when a pitcher is really good that day, since it's evident that the pitcher was really good that day. The times it gets brought up are those 6-7 IP/3 ER outings where the term is used as kind of a rationalization.

    If you had made this evaluation a month ago, Ramirez was right where Braun is now(to speak nothing of where Braun was a month ago, or of the fact that Ramirez has done this for the four previous seasons). But Braun is a "middle of the order beast" and Ramirez isn't? yes, because ryan braun is a better hitter than aramis ramirez. I give up then.

    I didn't remove anything. In fact I specifically said "I'm not saying he's a sub .850 guy". My point is that with two months of the season left to play, making declarative statements about the level of players can be deceiving, especially when they are as hot as Braun is right now, or as cold as Ramirez has been. I mean, Ramirez's GPA has been at least on par with 2008 Braun's(even including his great run right now) for each of the last 4 years. Do you really want to make the argument that Ramirez is no longer at that level because he had a terrible slump in the last month?
