  1. I'm pretty skeptical the Cubs are gonna want to mess with a Rule 5 pick for several reasons, but the one path that could make sense to me is a CF like Misner. The timing of finding out if he's a guy or not lines up so if he fails you can dump him and summon Davis/Canario later in the year for the same spot. Maybe the CF options seem unpalatable and/or prices for everything are higher than expected so they find a cheaper solution there to ensure they get different targets elsewhere. It would be a bit at odds with the spirit of Jed's CF comments though.
  2. So what could happen tomorrow: - Spain wins v. Japan because they're a force of nature - Costa Rica Concacafs their way into a draw(or victory) against the Germans - Morocco beats a Canada team playing a dead rubber - Belgium gets a result in a must-win game against Croatia That would add up to round of 16 matchups of Spain v. Croatia/Belgium, and....Morocco v. Costa Rica.
  3. Australia is in AFC now No, they're still in Oceania, they just play Asian teams because playing Oceania qualifying was like playing Aruba six times in a qualifying cycle. I think you're confusing Australia and New Zealand, Australia is definitely in AFC and went through their qualifying.
  4. that's a shame Liga MX also didn't win CCL for the first time this season as well.
  5. So we probably know enough to figure the most likely path for the US. It's simple really, just beat the Netherlands, then Argentina, then Brazil, then France, and you win the world cup.
  6. The amount of xG that has not been converted in the last 20 minutes in either of these games that would've swapped Mexico and Poland is insane
  7. oh man a Saudi defender just stuffed a shot headed towards an empty net because the keeper committed to the first ball
  8. Poland have a multiple card lead on Mexico in fair play points, so Mexico does need that 3rd goal even if Argentina scores again to even up GD. It also means that Mexico needs 2 if Poland and Argentina trade goals.
  9. if we can't get the Poland/Australia knockout game, can we at least not have Mexico fluke their way into the knockouts for a second straight WC
  10. lol ball don't lie Messi, that never should've been a pen to begin with
  11. Lifelong Poland fan logging on here
  12. Paul Tenorio and Sam Stejskal at The Athletic do great stuff, Sam's series about several players through the lens of their hometowns(Adams, Aaronson, Dest, Weah, Berhalter) is especially good. For stuff that isn't pre-world cup profiles, Paul's blow by blow of stoppage time today is pretty good.
  13. love that we're now playing with house money so the banter can really level up
  14. Coming back to this, my guess it's a combo of: - Gio is not 100%, and he's a teenager* who's played 800 club minutes in the last 18 months so he's being kept on a strict leash - Gio is not a vertical threat(especially given the injury risk), so he doesn't help the team as much in certain game states - Gregg doesn't rate Gio's defensive work as highly as others, which means he doesn't rank as highly as other options in certain other game states - Gio is not a clean fit at any position in the US formation, he's not a pure winger in the way that Pulisic, Weah, or Morris are(and Aaronson can be), and he's not enough of an engine room guy to be one of the 8s(which Aaronson only gets away with due to his 80 grade work rate) *he turned 20 two weeks ago
  15. What does this mean? The numbers in parentheses are the expected goals totals, or xG. You can think of it similarly to the statcast stuff you might see about expected batting average, it's measuring how likely a goal was when a shot was taken. It's not super definitive for a couple reasons(similar to why no one would look at single game FIP for proof a pitcher was awesome), but it can help you understand who had the better chances.
  16. Does anyone else sometimes casually forget the #7 overall pick from this summer being among our top prospects, because I definitely lack object permanence with these pitching prospects before they debut.
  17. Yellows are completely reset for knockouts correct? No, not til after the quarterfinals.
  18. Rooting interests for tomorrow, the potential quarterfinal opponent would be between the winner of Group C and the runner up in Group D. That means we really want Poland to get a result against Argentina to keep Argentina out of the top spot. Less likely and more fun would be Saudi Arabia blowing out Mexico to catch Argentina's GD, but they'd have to win by at least 3 to overcome a 1 goal Argentina win. In Group D it would take a miracle for France to not win the group, which is good. The rooting interest would be Australia getting a result over Denmark to take the 2nd spot. If both of those broke the US's way, neither of which seem beyond the pale given performances thus far, their (again, potential) quarterfinal opponent could be the winner of Poland/Australia.
  19. Yes it is exactly that.
  20. Musah needs to sort himself out defensively in that new spot on the right
  21. It does not, we have one more window to make 2 subs.
  22. It's gonna be Morris for Weah and Yedlin for Dest and then probably Wright for Sargent? Please get a 2nd
  23. don't worry there's gonna be 12 minutes of stoppage time too
