  1. Lots of teams could, so the question is really why on earth the A's picked that one. They must really think Ruiz is a an all-star.
  2. If the Braves are getting Adames like this 3-team trade seems like it's setting up to do, then I'll be at least a little surprised if Swanson to the Cubs isn't broken in the next 24 hours.
  3. There's some non-journalist rumoring that this is a 3 way deal involving the Brewers/Adames, which would certainly be interesting. EDIT: yep
  4. I think this is one of the consequences of banking Bellinger, is that guys looking for short term deals that are Mancini+ in caliber are only going to be okay with primary 1B/DH playing time if that's their only option. So that should conceivably keep Brantley as a LHH possibility, but probably eliminates names like Conforto and Gallo. I do generally agree though, which is why I'd like it if I saw names like Narvaez(instead of Vazquez) and/or Belt listed more prominently.
  5. Generally I agree with your sentiment but I think you have to be pretty naive to think anything is "off the record." At best, Berhalter demonstrated poor communication with a player. That said, he could have thrown him under the bus a long time ago. I agree that Berhalter counting on the story he tells about the world cup at a leadership summit *while the world cup is still going on* to be off the record is probably naive, even if it getting published in a newsletter was an avoidable mistake by a third party. As for player communication, it seems like he did right by Gio. By all accounts he was transparent with him about the problem and clearly didn't hold a grudge and used him as his effort improved. He could've easily pinned Gio's WC role on the very real issue to the press, but instead used the technically true vague answers about injury and game state to shield him from that scrutiny and keep the focus on Gregg.
  6. Paul and Sam were ready to publish the story on Monday without any of the knowledge of Berhalter's quotes(which everyone seems to agree were supposed to be off the record), and only hadn't yet because of Grant Wahl's death. Berhalter's involvement in the story coming out is limited to removing plausible deniability, which considering the weirdness around Gio plus Paul & Sam's journalistic reputation would be pretty small to begin with.
  7. Toolsy McScoutface is a big fan of Mervis, you say
  8. Considering he was well above that pace in 2020, that means his per 150 pace the last 5 years is 25.6, 19.4, 14.5, 15.1, and 2.2 last year. Seems like it's pretty fairly regressing last year for someone playing the upcoming season at 28.
  9. In the replies Tom clarified that he confirmed it was Reyna via sources, so it looks like there's more than just injury at play with Reyna's world cup role.
  10. agreed, it's a shame that if they sign Swanson they'll have to take Nico out back and shoot him
  11. Making contract guesses in this market is a good way to look foolish, but I would say that you're probably starting around 12/360 for Correa, then if the years start coming down the AAV comes up so the guarantee will drop slower(e.g. 10/330, 8/290). Gilby's point about Zaidi and Jed being similar is a fair one and it wouldn't be surprising if that off the wall Yankee reporting was trying to drive offers up. The whole Correa market is at least a little weird right now. You have the Giants interested but multiple reports of them barely discussing money, maybe that changes with more distance from their Judge pursuit but still either early or lukewarm. The Cubs are repeatedly interested and there was the somewhat out of character insistence from Wittenmyer they were in hard on him, but it seems like for now they're more likely to have already signed Swanson a week ago. The Twins are very interested but ultimately they're the Twins and probably need to wait for the contract ask to come down or get reach a point where creativity can win like last year. Rosenthal says the Dodgers are out, Mozeliak hasn't seem interested in getting involved, maybe the Yankees go nuts but everyone in that city hates him, and the Padres are no longer a wild card candidate. After last year it seems like he's not interested in playing the opt out game(at least as a primary means of maximizing $), so where is that deal going to come from?
  12. $15m aav seems reasonable, but they’re really paying like $24m if I’m understanding the luxury tax penalties, at least for next year I think it might actually be more than that, like 28.5. They'll be repeat offenders(30% tax rate) and Roster resource has them in the 60% surcharge bracket(> 60M over the LT line), so at this point every dollar of AAV costs them $1.90 if I'm interpreting the surcharge right.
  13. 5/75 seems pretty reasonable in this market. I'm reminded of the Fangraphs interview over the summer with a player who played in NPB who said he thought Senga was a reliever, wonder if the evals weren't as strong league wide as it seemed.
  14. what in the world is Hernandez thinking, that almost met the definition of targeting
  15. Mbappe was triple teamed and cut to the middle and stayed central while the entire England defense looked like the raptors had just gotten out of their cage. 5 seconds later Tchouameni hits a screamer.
  16. It's missing a word or two, "Okay, I just got word the Cubs are close to a signing" is the main thrust.
  17. Yeah if you follow the link Senga shared there’s nothing about him or his MLB decision if google translate is to be believed.
  18. He was staying in a house with several other journalists, so if there is some sort of foul play it would seem to be difficult to do discreetly.
  19. If you're targeting Swanson then I don't see much reason to get too worked up about 8/200 in this market. He turns 29 right before pitchers and catchers report, so 8 years for him isn't going any later in his career than say, the Darvish contract. And 25M AAV is less than I would expect so you're at least getting a slight discount for it. I'd rather have Correa, but especially with several holes and a hot market, I can at least understand how some might prefer something like Swanson + Senga to Correa + rehabbing SP
