  1. From Walker's page on Cubs.com. I don't believe he gets hammered by lefties. Walker's been good in a short stint v. LH, but for his career his been less successful. I don't mind having them together, because by the time a LOOGY is in the game, you can go to Murton to get the R/L matchup, and for defensive purposes. Of course if you want Murton in the lineup, that's a different matter. v. RH Lawton LF Walker 2B Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Burnitz CF Nomar SS Murton RF Barrett C v. LH Murton LF Walker 2B Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Burnitz RF Barrett C Nomar SS Hairston CF After tinkering with it, there's really a number of different combinations that I'm okay with, and no real ideal situation.
  2. I think I'd rather see Frese or Kelton before McClain.
  3. Yep, I think that will be the outfield. Some people really undervalue defense. Cub pitching is not that good. Murton & Hairston may be the odd men out. If that's the case, then it means Murton goes down for Patterson, which I don't like. Of course, they could always get rid of the redundant reliever, and keep Hairston as a utility guy. But I doubt we see them do that this late in the season. I don't see the Cubs bringing Patterson back up before September. They know it'll take him some time and don't seem to be in much of a rush. What would bringing up Patterson in September do? I don't think Patterson sitting the bench would be productive for him. I'd hate for him to be brought up only as a late-inning defensive replacement. From what I've read and heard, I'm not sure there's a big difference between Patterson now and Patterson of April-June. What's the alternative? By September the Minor League season is over, and Iowa isn't going to the playoffs.

  5. While it's not the blockbuster trade everyone was hoping for, it does add to the depth and versatility of the team. As of right now, you have 3 options for LF, 3 for CF, 3 for RF, 3 for 2B, 2 for leadoff, etc. Unfortunately, instead of Hairston replacing Macias as supersub, I'm sure Cedeno will go down to AAA. Hopefully, the Cubs will cut Remlinger when Williamson and Wood return. Who knows, maybe they can get a little something (very little) for him when he goes on waivers. Actually I am satisfied with this trade I just think it's funny that the guy withthe teams highest OBP is going to be the one replaced. cuse again, they're not replacing Lee...They're replacing Holly who has an OBP of around .300 Where you gettin that bro? Murton, his OBP is over .500 I believe.
  6. I gave it a yuck label because of who we got. Lawton always does well in the first half, then DIES DIES DIES in teh second. Oh well. I guess this isnt too bad of a situation. I'm just a little dissapointed we couldnt nab somebody else. If Lawton is platooned with Murton(Lawton is very bad against LH), then there's less chance of him wearing down, if that's the reason for his poor second half performances.
  7. From rotoworld and PAY attention to the bolded part of the statement. Cubs acquired outfielder Matt Lawton from the Pirates for outfielder Jody Gerut. We'll guarantee taking on Lawton's salary through next year gave the Cubs more pause here than giving up Jody Gerut. This tells me, the Cubs have Lawtons' rights till NEXT yr. So the Cubs technically are not getting a rental. Rotoworld is wrong. Lawton is only under contract through this season.
  8. No, because Hairston and the prospects would get claimed.
  9. Kruk just called the Braves the biggest winner at the deadline because of their acquisition of Farnsworth.
  10. BP 2005 says that Lawton was 7 runs above average in LF last year, and dead even in RF. However, PECOTA predicted he would be 2 runs below average this year. Take it for what it's worth.
  11. Lawton has an excellent platoon split, very good day/night splits. Going by Runs Created, here's some people Lawton has been better than this year: Jose Guillen Andruw Jones Craig Biggio Brady Clark Geoff Jenkins Carlos Beltran Ryan Klesko
  12. 7.75 million this year, free agent after this year.
  13. Might want to wait before more than 5 people respond before gauging the board's consensus.
  14. Probably the 5th to post this, rotoworld saying that Olney reports Lawton could come to the Cubs for Gerut.
  15. Soriano is almost 30, and hasn't been any better than Walker.
  16. That begs the question, what position does he play? I suppose that depends on who was dealt to get him, but I could see Griffey going to CF and our LF situation staying as is.
  17. I think Hendry will get Kearns sooner or later. He may not do it today, but Kearns would probably get through waivers anyway and it may even be an offseason move. When Hendry likes a guy (e.g. - Barrett, Burnitz) he usually eventually finds a way to get him. There's no way Kearns makes it through waivers. His contract is nothing, under a mil.
  18. I would be upset if Murton was used in a deal that got us a temporary fix. I'm not as high on Murton as some, but he's still valuable enough to not just throw in for a rental.
  19. average enough to lead the minor leagues in strikeouts Hill is not a strikeout pitcher in Major league Baseball. In 16 and 2/3 major league innings, he's K'd 18 guys. Looks like the K's are carrying over. EDIT: For comparison, only 1 qualified starter in MLB(Peavy) has a better K/9 than that.
  20. Roberts has a better RC/G than Hairston, 5.6 to 4.9. Roberts has been HORRIBLE in July after having 2 very good months by his standards. In 55 July AB's, he's hitting .109/.254/.109. Ack. So don't trade for Roberts cause he's sucked in July? Didn't say that, just offering his July as an explanation why his numbers are similar to Hairston's, yet he's been more productive.

  22. I guess that would be true if...um, it werent wrong. The Rangers offense is SIGNIFICANTLY better than ours. They are #3 in MLB in runs, only 9 out of first and we are #16 only 1 out of 18th. They are scoring nearly a run more a game than us. So if you are using runs and rbis to evaluate a ranger player, take it within the context of their lineup. The Rangers have better offensive players in all likelihood(I haven't taken a detailed look at it), but their overall numbers like Runs are skewed in their favor because 1) They play with the DH and 2) They play in a much more hitter friendly park than we do.
