  1. Crap, it ate Prior's comment. Prior isn't a FA until after the 2008 season, because he's still arbitration eligible after '06 and '07. That comment should be up there now.
  2. I don't think he's leading in OBP anymore, any Cabs and Pujols are breathing down his neck for AVG. Stupid prolonged slump we've all expected He's got a slim lead on Nick Johnson in OBP, but we'll see how Nick does now that he's off the DL. Lee has the higher OBP in 115 more PA's.
  3. Here's the problems I see with it. Since Wood requires several days between these appearances(as would most if not all pitchers), you are essentially playing with a 24 man roster on the days he doesn't pitch. You don't have the flexibility of a 7 man pen or of a 6 man bench. Secondly, if Wood is ineffective and needs to be replaced in any of the outings, it further taxes the pen that Wood is basically acting as a 5th and a half starter for. That said, I'm not against the idea per se, I'm just not convinced either way.

  5. Vance suggested this last week, that Wood be used to go several innings on 3-4 days rest out of the pen. I'm not sure how in favor of it I'd be, but it's an interesting idea to think about.
  6. Craig was suspended, and a couple other guys who were just minor league filler tested positive to my memory. 7 sounds a bit high, but I'm not sure.
  7. I don't know if you were counting all of those as FA's, but Lee has an option that will in all likelihood be picked up(it's only 500k more than he's making this year). Guillen is signed through 2006 at a reasonable price for his production, and Mota has another year of arbitration.
  8. Problem is, then you only have the acquisitions for a month + postseason if you make it. I think the end of July is the right balance of length into the season to determine who is competitive, and time left in the season for acquisitions to have a substantial impact.
  9. Thanks to Perez chasing 2 pitches that would have been called balls. Look, all I'm saying is that it must be something that either Brenly's noticed or its been proven somehow, that Dempster sweats more than what the heat/dewpoints help produce. Why would Brenly not have just said "with the heat and humidity, its creating sweat on Ryan's hand"? IIRC, Bob said something to the effect of "because of Dempster's profuse amounts of sweat on his throwing hand, he can't get an effective grip on the ball to throw his splitter the way he wants to." Isn't that what the rosin bag is for? Perhaps more pitchers should take advantage of it. I wasn't out there personally, so I'm not sure what happened (maybe it did help him out more than appeared to do so), but Ryan did go to the rosin bag at least 3 times, but still the sweat seemed to have overpowered it and his continual hand wiping. Huh, I must confess I didn't see the game, so I didn't know he went to it. Weird though, I can't remember the last time I saw a pitcher use the rosin bag during a game.
  10. Give it some time. They've been on the market since November and have already cut profits of the entire Microsoft corporation by 5%. Also, is there a way we can make this site viewable only in Mozilla? That would rock. And lose the 34% who use IE (which is probably actually around 64%)? It is NEVER smart to tailor a site to be used by a specific browser. You can download Mozilla for free, and it only takes a few minutes AT MOST if you have a slow connection, instantly if you have a fast connection. Not everyone has the luxury of picking their browser of choice, due to work constraints.

  12. Yep, then he threw out his elbow. Call it Chad Fox by proxy.
  13. Walk Corey walk. I'm starting to get a little excited to see what Williamson can do for the major league pen. Also, yet another strong game for Montanez. .317/.358/.523/.881 in almost 70 AA Plate Appearances.
  14. Take it FWIW, but my HS baseball coach's brother was in the army with Farns' brother. He told him about Kyle before Kyle was in the bigs to watch for him, but also told him that he did steroids. Again, take it FWIW, but I thought I'd throw it out there. It certainly didn't surprise me when I heard it, and I'm one of the Farns' biggest backers.
  15. Where would you put him? In center? Lawton on the bench? Padilla is a righty, and at least Holly isn't playing. He could start Burnitz in CF and Lawton in RF, but that would make him play a rookie and rookies are bad. Not wanting a Murton/Burnitz/Lawton defensive outfield is not a crime. Would I do it? Maybe, but I'm not going to begrudge Dusty for going for a semblence of outfield defense. I'm all for getting on Dusty when he unjustly benches rookies, but tonight and Murton is not that time.
  16. via Rotoworld I don't think any team would complain about having a middle infield of Polanco and Guillen locked up for 3-4 years. Polanco has been a good, consistant player for a while now, and it amazes me he couldn't get a long term deal before now. The guy has a .344 career OBP, doesn't strike out, plays a good defense at 2B, and supposedly is a great guy to have in the clubhouse. His OBP's since 2000: 2000-.347 2001-.342 2002-.316/.353 (STL/PHI) 2003-.352 2004-.345 2005-.376/.426 (PHI/DET) I'm sorry, but I disagree with Rotoworld here. Would you have signed Todd Walker to a 4-year deal before 2003?
  17. It pains me to say it, but I think my namesake might be the most likely Cub to have a positive test, IMO.
  18. I didn't. I said die-hards. Real fans. Whatever you want to call them. If the Cubs played in US Cellular, and had the pathetic marketing the Sox have had (admittedly), they'd be in the same situation as the Sox are. If you consider fans that are only fans because of the bar-like atmosphere, or because of national marketing for decades... do you honestly consider them real fans? I am not saying you should dislike them, but at least realize there is a distinction. You really think yuppies are the entirety of the difference between the two fanbases?
  19. I kinda doubt it, but if you want to see a clip, you can check back on page 2, where JonMDavis has the link to Vance's question and Ryno's answer. Anyone know why I can only hear it? I have the same problem. I found I have that problem with .avi files. Don't know what to do about it though.
  20. Why do you say that Edmonds is better than Griffey? Over their careers they have remarkably similar numbers. Or were you just talking about present day? Present day. I should've been able to figure that by reading CubbieRich's post. My bad.

  22. I'm not sure if I want Murton as a starting OF in the future, but the fact is that right now he's our 3rd best outfielder, and that includes Patterson. I figured "small sample size" would be applicable?? Guess not when it's a prospect who shows a little something. :o If I were basing my evaluation off of his major league performance, why would I call him the 3rd best outfielder?

  24. Teams put everyone on waivers so it is less obvious who they are trying to move. It's also a way to gauge who has interest in certain players, even if you don't plan on moving them at the time.
