  1. My god, when to the game on thr I'm going to give a big cheer to Dusty. For real, how does this guy have a job? I use to think a managers role in a teams performance was overrated... Dusty has changed that opinion. How can Walker not be starting 2b? How can Burnitz not be in center? If I were a cubs fan i'd be calling for henery's head to - having Macias and Perez on the team is just silly. I hope i'm not sounding like a troll but I really think henery is an overrated GM. The team he's built (that includes dusty) is broken - it's time to clean house. whew. Perez serves a purpose - but it's as late inning defense, spot starting or pinch hitting. Macias imho serves no purpose that a minor leaguer couldn't handle. Is his D even that good? Looks avg to me: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/dt/perezne01.shtml He's an out making machine. He shouldn't be on ANY roster in MLB. I've been saying this for a year now. He's awful.
  2. Really? No experience needed? No minor leagues? Nothing? Is that really what the Cubs need at this point? I dont have the answer.....but I think a little managing experience would be a good idea. Was Girardi a bench coach for Torre? I hadn heard that. When? And what is he (Girardi) doing now? I'm pretty sure that's what he's doing right now, bench coaching for the Yanks.
  3. why can't this team ever pull out wins like that against good teams.... coughNeifihitagrandslamcough
  4. After watching Eckstein take BP, I didn't think he could hit a Tennis ball out of the park.
  5. Didn't he get in trouble for something he said? I thought I remember him being fired for something other than performance.
  6. To clarify, I'm not saying that we shouldn't hire someone without any managerial experience, I'm just saying as fans we can't pass judgment on a hiring until we know how they manage. If the person has no experience, we have to wait until they do so before evaluating.
  7. I'd say this was worded wrong. How about....."in light of their payroll.....the Yankees management knows what they're doing." Yeah, you got what I was saying. Even with that monstrous payroll, the Yankees have good management in place to help them achieve the success that they've had.
  8. Unfortunately there isn't going to be much talent to spend that money on this offseason. The free agent pool is pretty pathetic going into this offseason. I could see Hendry pulling off a big trade though for a Dunn, Kearns type player. Of course I'm also hoping that Hendry and Dusty come to an agreement that this team is better off with Dusty somewhere else. If anything, then, overpay some guys for the bullpen for one year rather than giving them their market value for a multiyear deal. Three of those 7 in the bullpen from the original post are horrible (Novoa, Wuertz, Bartosh), and one I've never seen pitch (Brownlie). So with the free agents being as bad as they are, just sign some proven guys to pitch out of the pen for one year, and still have the same amount of money for the next offseason. Worst case scenario, someone we sign that we expect to do good, doesn't, yet there's hardly any risk to it as it's only for one season and he'll be off the books following the season anyway. That's easier said than done. Aside from the big money closers, there are pretty few occurrences of proven pen guys on the FA market. That's why building a bullpen is so tough, because their performances can be unpredictable.
  9. Despite their payroll, the Yankees management knows what they're doing. Torre is a good manager, and being involved in that system can only help. Plus, being a Northwestern grad, we can hope that Joe is smart enough to be able to detach himself from the players when making decisions on PT. However, as I said in another thread, there's no way to tell how good a manager Girardi, or any other candidate without managerial experience, will be. Until they are in the position, we don't know if they'll do the same stupid things that Baker has done to hamstring the team.
  10. To be fair, he had a high BABIP at West Tenn and has been legging out tons of IF hits there too. I don't know the exact number since BA took down Murton's numbers at AA, but I get a .376 BABIP for Matt at AA.
  11. Given that he doesn't hit a lot of home runs, or strike out a ton, that LD% means he could hit .280-.300. Given his walk rate and IsoP, you could project him around an .800 OPS, right around Burnitz's level.
  12. has a broadcaster ever jumped from the booth to the dugout b4? Interesting question. NO but I'm pretty sure Mark Grace would like to be the first... larry dierker did. why do people think joe girardi would be a good manager? He's educated(Northwestern grad) and is learning under Torre. However, there's no way any of us can pass judgment on any managerial candidate that hasn't managed yet. We just don't know if they'll do some of the same stupid stuff that Baker does.
  13. 18 hits and 10 walks. Wow.
  14. While I understand what your saying and agree that I wouldn't want them to tighten up the purse strings, having a low payroll does not automatically make for a less competitive team, just as having a high payroll doesn't automatically guarantee a WS trophy type team (see the 2005 version of the Cubs). No, but it guarantees Prior and Z won't be around for very long. Just because the payroll goes down one year doesn't mean it won't return to where it was. As I've said before, the Cubs could drop payroll and still have enough freed money to spend on improving the team.
  15. I'm not sure the offense is upgraded at all in that scenario. There's the potential for it to be good, but expecting it to be significantly better than this year is a bit of a stretch.
  16. wow is this cubs.com? nice one cards troll. Sorry buddy I dont find this massive collapse funny at all. but then again I thought cards fans had class, what was I thinking. Come on, he's not trolling. On another note, there's a chance the Cards miss the playoffs. Woohoo.
  17. Good night for Corey. 3 for 4 with a K, and threw out Carlos Quentin at the plate. Leicester with a decent outing, 8 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
  18. Patterson walked 45 times last year. He's walking at a good clip in AAA this year. Before this offseason when they tried to change his swing, his walk rate had increased in every MLB season. I don't know how you can make the claim that he has no walk potential, or was not improving in that aspect of his game. He still has never walked more than 45 times. And I don't really care how many walks he seems to be putting up in AAA, because he's batting like .200. Anyone can decide not to swing as much and increase their walk total, the challenge is doing that without screwing up the other aspects of your game. That's what CPatt just plain lacks. "Talent". This is what I call talent, not speed or power. He is not talented in terms of the ability to make contact or in terms or reaction time. Patterson is 1 for 2 again tonight. As others have said, he started off hitting well, then went into a funk that culminated with him having to take off a few days with some chest illness, which possibly contributed to his funk. Since coming back he's been hitting well and still walking, and he's up to .253. I don't think his lowered average is due to him trying to walk more, in fact, I'd bet that his walks have come in games where he has had the most success.
  19. Daytona rain delayed after 3, 2-2. Moore has a 2 run HR for the D-Cubs.
  20. Minnesota thanks us in advance for when we sign Jacque Jones for 3/25. not if we get down to one of the first 15 picks! Wow, that really is a bright side! We're 13th right now!

  23. You know what? You're right. You would know better than professional sports trainers with years of experience and firsthand knowledge of Nomar's swing and step. This isn't basketball, Nomar's not exerting himself the entire time he's in the game. He has just as much chance of re-injuring himself in the 1st as the 9th. If you can play 7 innings of baseball, you can play 9. What reasons are there for him not to play everyday? It's not the swings I'd be worried about. It's more the quick, lateral movements of playing SS and the starting/stopping of running the bases. (He didn't get hurt swinging, he got hurt coming out of the box -- which I saw in person, unfortunately) I'll admit I really have no idea what I'm talking about, but days off would seeminly reduce the risk of re-injury. Today wasn't the difference between playing 7 or 9 innings -- which I would agree is pointless -- but between playing and taking the day off. But it's not like the risk builds the more he plays. Isn't he just as likely to hurt himself at SS tomorrow, whether he played today or not? I say yes, which is why not playing him because of the injury is dumb.
  24. Maybe I'm naive, but I don't see how the Cream of Wheat comment can be taken racially, unless you just say "he said that because I'm black/hispanic/etc.". Cream of Wheat use to have an elderly African-American man who was serving Cream of Wheat to little white kids on the front cover. Did not know that. Thanks.
