  1. Isn't there speculation that Maris and his contemporaries were on amphetamines? Players have been skirting the rules since the rules were made, I don't really see the point in getting so upset at Bonds, and I don't like him one bit. So cheating is okay in your book? No, the point is that getting so upset at Bonds because he cheated to break records that were set by people who might have cheated themselves is a bit silly. For all we know, Cy Young and Mendoza might have been cheaters. I think it's absurd to give Bonds a pass and not get upset about his cheating because others *might* have cheated. Just because others *might* have gotten away with it, you don't give those that *did* cheat any slack, otherwise the game loses every bit of credibility that it has. The only way to deter others from cheating in the future is to drop the hammer as hard as you can on those that you know did. Allowing Bonds any slack because Maris may have been on amphetamines is the equivalent to giving Scott Peterson the benefit of the doubt because OJ got over. I didn't say that we should condone what Bonds did. I'm saying that all the vitriol and spite towards him is out of proportion.
  2. On another note, that Reds lineup looks like it was set according to whose birthday is first in the year. Dunn 2nd, Aurilia 4th, Kearns behind Aurilia and Hatteberg...
  3. Womack's on the Neifi Perez 5 step program to a contract extension. Step 1: Play so terribly that a bad team releases you Step 2: Remind Jim Hendry that you are alive to get minor league contract Step 3: Play over your head for a month Step 4: Regress to previous crappiness Step 5: Get contract extension because your overall performance isn't awful because of good month.
  4. Anyone remember how the team looked in the pre-Cup friendlies in 2002?

They guy I'm most upset with is Bud Selig for turning a blind eye to the problem. And since when do amphetamines give you a boost in power. They make your more alert and hyper but don't give you more strength to turn flyballs into homeruns. I suppose if you want to take it to extremes you could argue somehow hotdogs and beer gave Ruth an unfair advantage. I wasn't replying specifically to you, more to the consensus that is so up in arms over Bonds. To my knowlege, amphetamines help with stamina. They're an upper that helped people avoid the affects of fatigue, at least for the length of a game. Someone feel free to correct/add on if that's not right.

  7. All in all, that was infuriating to read. Rusch should get the next start. Who would you rather have make that start? Someone else that has the slightest hope for improvement. Williams, Hill, Guzman, Ryu, etc. It talks about Rusch earning it with 9 K's and ignores that he gave up 7 baserunners, 4 runs, and 2 home runs in 4 innings. He's been awful for quite a while now, but since he can't get demoted he sticks around until we give him another undeserved shot at the rotation. And then there was the nonsense about Wuertz "just not being 'there'".
  8. That's really all you needed.

  11. http://espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/65x90/6612.jpg BadOhman: BUT IT'S MARK, BAWS, MARK WAS TROWN FROM A MOVING CAR AND GOT CRUSHT B'NEATH A STEAMROLLER! HE'S LIKE A PANCAKE BAWS, I DON'T THINK HE CAN...
  12. Or I'm constantly drunk..... Fact: I have no used whatsoever in being a "stat nerd" don't care for the "Statistical analysis of players." That doesn't mean I don't value tools, stats, whatnot, I just want BASEBALL players who can contribute now, tomorrow, and for the next 10-12 yrs. I don't nec want athletes, the Cubs need baseball players. And that is the BOTTOMLINE, isn't it? Stop with the projection, the "potential", the Cubs should draft for floors, instead of ceilings, cause they've reached for ceilings, and it has NOT done a darn thing for them. It's not an either/or situation like you're making it out to be.
  13. Ponson's peripherals aren't exactly supporting that 2.92 ERA. He's giving up baserunners, opponents are hitting him pretty well, and he's not K'ing many guys. His fielding independent ERA is 4.80 right now, so his actual ERA is likely to rise soon.
  14. Why did he only give Ryu one chance to start? Obviously he ignored the fact that the wind was blowing out today. Guzman and Hill each had 4 starts so there is no reason that Hendry should be sending Ryu back down after 1 start. Obviously it was worse than any of the starts Guzman and Hill had, but it's still just one start. At least give the guy a chance to redeem himself. I think the original plan was to only start him once in place of Wood. And then stay in the pen for a period of time. If they really planned to send down Wuertz, bring up Ryu for a day to start, then send him down for Aardsma they're even more incompetent than I realized. Complete lack of consideration for contingencies.
  15. He really hasn't done anything to justify his spot in the pen. Then again, we have a boatload of players who are not justified to be on this team. You mean, besides being a decent reliever(with peripherals that suggest improvement) in 75 innings at the major league level last year and completely dominating AAA this year? He's had 4 outings this year for crying out loud, and only 2 of them were bad. The latter part of your statement is hardly a ringing endorsement. The point is that his two demotions were kneejerk reactions to poor outings. Every reliever has poor outings, and this year we've been sending the message that one bad performance gets your bags sent to Des Moines. Wuertz was a good middle reliever last year, and his strikeout rates and lack of contact made on him in general made him a good candidate to be even better this year. He's been great at Iowa, we should just let him pitch out of the pen instead of rotating him through with the likes of Novoa and Aardsma. He also needs to drastically improve his walk rate at the major league level. Definitely. Let's give him the chance to do so.
  16. Yeah, he's shown that he shouldn't have been demoted. I didn't notice that Salas was blocking him at Daytona, I was under the impression that Spears was the guy manning 2B. Regardless though, Robby can play all over the IF, he should be getting at bats in Daytona even if they're a little more scarce than in low A.

  18. How about a promotion for Chirinos? And wtg EPatt
  19. Enough about the White Sox plz Barrett should serve his suspension after his appeal is heard and his suspension hopefully reduced.

  21. The mismanagement of the 25 man roster this year has been frighteningly bad.
  22. I thought it was pretty clear he was safe. His leg goes between the legs of the pitcher. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44/cubsfan_05/safe.jpg
