  1. When he hits the ball, he tends to hit it really hard. Contact is the problem. Combination of being too passive early in the count and too aggressive deep in the count, and bad pitch recognition (IMO). It doesn't look promising. That's not even true. He has an anemic LD%. If you got bonus points for far HRs he might have value as a 25th guy Wow. Wasn't he the prize in the Garza trade ? No, not remotely. He was a bonus lottery ticket.

  3. Obviously, and davell may not have done the best job expressing what he meant. That said, there are things that cannot be gleaned from any amount of statistics or statistical analysis. Those things can only make us feel better about poor statistical performance for so long, but I feel we're still well inside that window with Almora. If people who know their [expletive] say they're not worried about him, I'll take some comfort in that. For now.
  4. I know it. It sounds crazy, and maybe I'm a homer, but I still feel like Wood doesn't get the credit for that game that he should, mostly because of Kevin Orie and maybe the official scorer (was it Rosenberg then?).
  5. I've thought "[expletive] Kevin Orie" more than a few times in the past 10 minutes or so. Maybe petty of me, but so be it.
  6. No doubt. But he is quite young, especially for his level. Given how aggressive his approach is, I think the struggle he has gone through this year has been one that he was going to have to experience. At some point, pitchers were going to start using his aggression against him. Javy never making the adjustment and flaming out is a definite possibility. But as young as he is, it's far too early to say that is what we're seeing right now (though it may be; only time will tell). I still have confidence he will become a first division player.
  7. Man, it really sucks they won't be making a trip to Albuquerque. Colorado Springs is still in reasonable driving distance, but my wife will be working those days, so that rules that out.
  8. Man, I really wish I could have heard Hawk's call of tonight's game, specifically the bottom of the eighth inning.
  9. Yeah, the strikeout column has been the first place I've been looking on Tennessee's box scores for a while now. Of course that's because I usually already know if he's hit a homer or not, but if he can curtail the Ks, things get even more exciting.
  10. Villanueva could just be moved to 1B/OF to accommodate Bryant when the time comes, imo. Christian needs to work on his bat more than his glove.
  11. I saw this, and I don't really get it. So every guy the took up to pick #199 was in the BA top 200 and that means they're killing it? I wouldn't be shocked if the Cubs are the only team to do that this year. There are teams that either go way off the reservation (according to BA's board) or will draft cheap senior signs. So in BA's eyes, they're killing it. Which is only really possible when your first two guys are underslots. Well yeah, but if there was a year to it this way, this was one. It seems like it was a pretty smart play, given the circumstances (lack of elite talent).
  12. Which is why you don't lose your [expletive] on day one.
  13. Cease's congeniality and modesty have been mentioned in various places, yes.
  14. Now the real trick will be to get him to sign.
  15. I don't even care about 2003 (as far as the Marlins go), that was more about the Cubs failure. Loria is a monster and anything that would validate the way he does business in any way would be a bad thing. Seriously, [expletive] the Marlins. That would be, but I'd comfortably bet that Milwaukee and Miami don't make the playoffs.
  16. The Zimmer boys look like they could be Fred Gwynne's illegitimate children. Well, Bradley, anyway.
  17. I don't see that at all. I think part of the reason they took him is that he's advanced, and could be on the big club soon. If they were looking for trade bait, they'd have taken one of the guys who were ranked higher.
  18. I am fine with this. He seems to have an advanced approach, and could be a fast mover.
  19. Tipping pitches isn't going to turn an elite pitcher into a batting practice pitcher, but knowing what type of pitch is coming is a massive boon to a hitter. There are very, very few pitchers that I can think of who succeeded even when hitters knew what was coming (Mariano Rivera is the only one coming to mind right now, actually). If a pitcher is consistently tipping, they're surrendering one their biggest advantages.
  20. Only if you add more than just the one player. If you trade away all the top bats and do nothing else, you've done very little to appreciably improve the big league team's prospects. And until it is demonstrated that the team will spend money, I don't see any reason to expect much else would be done. The team would be a handful of wins better, with all the best trade chips gone and still the same cheapskate ownership. Gutting the top 5 in a trade for Stanton would make you feel more eager to tune into the games, but it would only be a marginal step toward making the team competitive in the short or long term. And what then if the Rickettses don't pony up to extend him? Then it becomes a potential catastrophe. Unfortunately, I think it's fairly clear that the lynchpin in any near term Cubs turnaround is going to be whether at least a couple of the top 5-7 prospects in the system make it. Of course all of this assumes that the Cubs would need to give the Marlins both of Baez/Bryant and most of the remainder of our best prospects, which I don't think is necessarily true.
  21. Yes. Marginally. Trading some of our top talent for MLB talent would absolutely help, but cleaning out our top 5 for one player, even for a guy like Stanton, would be not be a prudent move. One player is not the difference right now, and imo, even if MLB talent is added, the Cubs need one or two of Baez/Bryant/Almora/Soler/Edawrds to make it. Though at some point, Stanton will be traded. Even if Miami were to make him a market value extension offer, I don't see any way he would accept it. They'll have to deal him sooner or later. Referring to previous conversation, Matt Kemp is a huge question mark at this point. Given his contract, I would be hesitant to give up much for him.
  22. Yeah, a part of me would really love to see the Cubs to move, leaving the neighborhood and city with an empty, decrepit husk as a reward for all their resistance and meddling.
  23. Baez's almost homer double: http://www.milb.com/multimedia/vpp.jsp?content_id=33207867&topic_id=18601616&c_id=&sid=milb
