Was at the game last night. After the first period I thought it would be a relaxing, easy blowout trip to the UC on a Saturday night. It turned out to be a little more exciting than it should have been, but it made for a hell of a fun outing. Anyone know if Hossa will still go to the olympics? After last night I'd rather he take some time off...

There are going to be crashes. That's part of racing at the top level, on what is surely considered to be the most difficult course in the world. I don't mind that. I do mind continuing without some sort of plexiglass extension on the wall by the steel pillars, however.

He flew right off the track, and there are steel tresses all over the place. I don't even know if padding would have helped. Horrible, horrible, horrible.

Yeah, only the surface. Texas is a way better fit. Texas would want to go to the Big 10 because they want to be a national institution with a high academic standard, and because they like making money. OK. I already thought of Texas as all those things, but if they aren't then those would be good reasons. I guess I am also underestimating the Big 10's clout here. It seems almost.....audacious....to me that they would think they could pluck Texas. But that's not really what I'm hearing now.

I think Pitt makes the most sense. The Big 10 might want Texas, but it doesn't seem like all that good a fit, and I'm struggling to come up with good reasons Texas would want to go to the Big 10. Why would that be better than just staying on the throne of the Big 12? But Pitt......geographically closer, kind of the same style of football, the possibility of a good yearly rivalry with Penn State, maybe OSU too. Seems to work better, at least on the surface.

It was interesting to hear Kane talk about how they practice their breakaways on Niemi and how he stops almost all of them. I just like the way he moves in net better than Huet. But I'm still a little gunshy about giving him the lion's share of the starts because of the experience factor.

Understood. It's still a crazy thing to say. Sometimes Barkley just says stuff to say it. The most interesting thing I've seen recently was a CBS sports article that showed how the Bulls could trade Tyrus, find a taker for Salmons, and wind up with enough cap room to afford 2 max free agents.

That was a fun game last night. My heart skipped a beat when the puck was tipped in the net at the end of regulation. Fortunately, it was too late.

How many times do we hear about a team that isn't tackling well? More often than not, I see players flying at players without wrapping up, leading with the head, going for the knees to cut a guy down. And it isn't always when that's the only way to make a play, either. Players are being rewarded for laying out players in any way they can. Often, that means the helmet goes right at a guy's head, or right at his knees. If you want to cut down injuries in football, then IMO the best way to do that is to reward solid tackling technique and penalizing leading with the head and blatantly going for the knees. Football will still be plenty violent. We're talking about people not being able to remember the room they were just in, increased alzheimer's, even early death.

We had to pay Hester a lot of money or someone else would have. Once you pay a guy that much money, keeping him as a kick returner is pretty hard to justify. He's not a bad receiver; he's just not top level. The problem is, Lovie keeps calling him a #1, which is ridiculous and makes it impossible for Hester to live up to expectations. I was just listening to Martz this morning on the radio, and he said that his plan for Hester is to make him more of a Hakim-type receiver. That sounds like a much better plan to me than trying to force him into the same eschelon as Reggie Wayne, where he was never going to make the grade.

You can expect the player to assist in making the tackle instead of just teeing off on a guy. If any and all contact is penalized, that's one thing, but if they are looking at penalties against the cheap shots I'd have no problem with it. If their only intention is to hit a guy really hard with a shoulder or helmet, they aren't really trying to make the tackle. Force them to spread their arms and make a tackle. They should start enforcing the rule against leading with your head, which doesn't even get called many times. Right now, players weigh the chances of getting a flag/fine vs. getting away with it and producing a Sportscenter highlight they can crow about with their friends. Make that a consistently called penalty, all the time. Make fines for doing it automatic, and escalating if you continue to do it up to and including lengthy suspensions.
