  1. Not sure if this was posted already, but... http://bleacherreport.com/articles/357117-source-peppers-taylor-have-verbally-agreed-today-a-formality I guess this falls into the category of rumor, and I'm not sure who this source is. Interesting to see what is going to happen the next few hours. I LOL'd after hearing that both NE and Philly made offers to Peppers, after hearing Mike & Mike list them as great teams who never go after FA's.
  2. Looking back at the past 3 years, it looks to me like the Redskins have been most active on the defensive side of the ball, signing Fletcher, Smoot, Haynesworth. They've been a top 10 defense for the past 3 years. They were terrible in '06 as a defense, ranking 31st. So it makes sense to me that they went after defensive targets. I'm sure the FA signings weren't the only factor, but it seems to have contributed to improving the defense. They haven't been good offensively in forever, and other than signing Randle El (who I would argue isn't all that big a signing), they haven't really targeted big offensive FA's -- at least, not at the skill positions. Here's a site that lists their recent aquisitions: http://www.redskins.com/gen/articles/Free_Agency__Redskins_Usually_Aggressive_5464.jsp There's defnitely danger in going the FA route. It's obvious the current Bears regime is desperate for quick improvements to be made. I'm not all that comfortable saddling the next coach/GM with expensive, underperforming players either. But I also think that just dismissing it as something that could never, ever help is wrong.
  3. The Vikings were already defending division champions. But not serious contenders for a Super Bowl. The point is, they got better after the signing.
  4. Are there examples of it working? I'm not as up-to-date on the Bears' offseason as most, but I don't see any offensive linemen on the list of targets. You could argue that the Vikings picked up a pretty big fish last season off the market and it made them an NFC Championship contender.
  5. To me, Bosh is a must this offseason. They should go up there and shower him with money & women. He seems like the obvious choice, and the Bulls cannot fail this offseason to land a big fish.
  6. Yep. And Lovie is on a flight back to Chicago from Charlotte with Peppers and his agent. It sounds like it's gonna be Manumanaleuna, Peppers, and Taylor...and still probably a safety, though not necessarily today on that one. Angelo was a hero after the Cutler deal, a huge goat after the season, and now everybody is gonna love him again...or at least like him a whole lot more. Mike & Mike compared Chicago to Washington this morning, and they were saying "we know this doesn't work." Sour grapes.
  7. So now the question is, how does Quenneville play this? He can give Niemi more time, see if he develops more in time for the playoffs. Or he can punt, say it's too close to playoff time and we need Huet playing, and switch back. Either way, the talk about the Blackhawks going into the playoffs will certainly be whether the goaltending can hold up.
  8. Huet is absolutely a starter in this league, and it's not close. There aren't two dozen better goalies in the league right now. He may not be the ideal starter for a Cup contender, and he may be overpaid, but he's definitely a No. 1 somewhere in the league. According to his save percentage, he is 32nd out of 45 qualified goalies, on by all accounts a good defensive team. and that's assuming the quality of shots they see are equal, which they aren't. I think the best we see from Huet is when he's playing regularly. I could be wrong statistically, but I feel like when he comes in cold there's just going to be goals scored. If he's playing regularly, he can get hot. Seeing Niemi look less sharp (even when we were winning), I'm starting to think now that we just need to play Huet and hope he gets hot.
  9. yeah, but we can't ignore the line, either. Ignore it? No. But from what I understand, there isn't that slam-dunk guy the Bears could sign to make it all better. On the other hand, Peppers would be huge, and Marshall as well, and they should be available (albeit -- expensive in terms of either money or trade value). So I'm assuming the Bears are concentrating on what they feel they can make big strides in, given that the draft just isn't going to do it for them this year. If they did acquire Peppers I also assume they'd go OG with one of their earlier picks. Should be able to pick up a decent OG around the 3rd.
  10. It sounds interesting. I'm just not sure Soriano would ever be a good 1B. There would definitely be a dropoff from Lee, I'm just not sure how much.
  11. I've never heard that as a suggestion before. My intial impression is that it's pretty radical.
  12. Yeah. I went to work out last night and they were winning 2-1. I came out and they were down 5-2. That didn't sound too much like the Blackhawks I'm used to. Also -- hasn't it been forever since we've beaten the Islanders? Strange that they would be the team we can never beat, if that's true (can't remember where I saw that).
  13. I don't think that Z & Millar practicing a handshake means that Millar's chances are improving.
  14. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/02/more-fun-with-tampering-bears-met-with-peppers-agent/ I'm just happy they're showing legitimate interest in spending money this offseason. The other possibility is that Kaplan was mistaken.
  15. If he was great, then at his age he'd go for a 1st rounder. He's not, but his physical tools are undeniable and his potential is still well intact. Asking for, say, a 2nd + a 6th is not outrageous at all.
  16. Better be the first one, plus a 5th or something. I was thinking the same thing. Something else needs to be thrown in besides just a straight-up Olsen for 2nd rounder trade.
  17. Green, Bulger, Kitna and O'Sullivan all had decent mobility at one time. Green and Bulger had injuries which hurt their mobility. Kitna always was a mobile QB. And O'Sullivan was 5th for QBs in yards per game scrambling when he started 8 games for Martz in 2008. I don't think Martz will be able to get away with hanging his QB out to dry in Chicago like he might have been able to in his former cities. I think we're going to see a tempered Martz approach, not the "greatest show on turf" Martz approach.
  18. So much for that idea. It was one that I hoped would work for a year, but no.
  19. He is one hell of a player.
  20. So it's breaking sports news that Biggs wrote an opinion article asking whether Taylor could possibly be a target? Wow.
  21. Don't do it Chester. Throwing the ball isn't a major strike against Martz. The thing I would be concerned about are the deep routes he runs and number of 7 step drops he uses with that o-line. His QB's have gotten killed when they haven't had a good o-line in front of them. For the Bears, OL is a much bigger need than WR or anything on defense in my opinion. I'm hoping Williams is ready to be that left tackle now. I'm basing this off of his play against the Vikings late in the season, which was pretty good against one of the better pass rushers in the league. I'm still worried about it though. I realize there's more to it than just LT, but that would be the key first step to not having Cutler land in the hospital.
  22. The Russian part of the closing ceremony is kind of like an acid trip.
  23. yeah, the u.s. did all the things that russia should have done but didn't - play physical, make the simple plays (get the puck deep, short passes, got traffic in front of the net). maybe russia doesn't have the type of players who will do those things, or maybe the coaches didn't try to get them to play the system that could give a super-talented team trouble. I'm not an expert on Russian hockey, but from what I have heard it's just not their style of play. You would think they'd try a few adjustments though.
  24. The sooner we can start playing baseball, the better.
