    How could one accurately say they KNOW they are not? But yet you are saying just that. All I know is the pressure on the Cubs is a) different, and b) probably greater than that faced by a "typical" team/player. You don't know either of those things. Sorry to break everyone's hearts, but most players couldn't care less about the history of the Cubs and what winning a title would mean to Cubs fans. To the extent that the players are reminded of it by the media, and having to answer questions about it, then yes it can and probably does add to their stress or pressure or whatever. If nothing else it's a distraction. It might be even worse to have to listen to the stupid curse talk over & over again when you don't give a damn.

    There's not additional significance placed on, say, a GB/CHI matchup because of the long history of both teams? Oh, I think there is. I don't think this is a hockey-only thing. It's probably more acute in hockey as jersey said.

    2010: the fallout year. Hopefully it's not more like 2010-2012, the fallout era.

    If the end result of all this is that I can pick up a couple of after-market tix for much less, then I guess things could be worse.

    Nobody "characterized their situation as no different than any other team." The discussion is over whether people honestly believe that players on the Cubs face what apparently amounts to crippling pressure in playoff situations simply because they play for the Cubs (as if that is the overriding factor over how the teams match up, how the team was constructed, who is injured, who is hot, etc., etc.). Not impossible, just additionally difficult until they get it done. Which, as you'll remember, I don't believe they ever will! :hello:

    I'm sure they are. They're probably still hoping against hope that this team will turn around.

    Correct. It's just the reality of the situation. The team blows. Believe it or not, some Cub fans actually do care about the quality of baseball that they would be seeing if they shell out for tickets.

    I guess it's somewhat disturbing, but not all that ususual to see a team that is dropping ballgames start sniping. Losing makes everyone's faults come out. Suddenly everyone's got something wrong with them, or isn't a very good guy, or has trouble getting along with others.

    Whenever they get close, all they hear about is the curse, and how will you blow it this time, and yada yada. It's got to have an effect, though I can't put a number on it.

    I don't really see that it's possible to choose not to be a fan if you already are one. I guess that's kind of what I'm saying; it's pretty clear that the regular posters here are fans and I don't really "believe" it when they say they think or know for sure that the Cubs will never win a WS "ever again." Well, I said I didn't have any faith that they would win. That seems very different from saying I know for sure they they will never win. Yes. Although, when N&G says he doesn't get it, I must admit -- I don't really "get" my own fandom either. I certainly have wondered what it would be like to be, say, a Yankees fan. But I can't imagine being a fan of another team. I love the Cubs -- but I'm also resigned to them. It probably just doesn't make much sense.

    I never understand sentiments like this at all. If someone is convinced they'll never win another WS, then why be a fan of them? What's the point? Then it just becomes being a "fan" of misery, and I don't get that at all. I don't see why faith needs to come into the equation. I root for the Cubs because I like them. Doesn't have anything to do with whether or not I "believe" they will win.

    I have no faith the Cubs will ever win it. They'll need to prove my lack of faith to be wrong. "Believing" in them has become too much of a fruitless enterprise for me over the past 30 years. Show me. Prove it. Ronnie's not going to make it......unfortunately. I do feel bad for him. He wants to see it so badly.

    Yeah, I still consider Ramirez to be among Hendry's positives.

    There's a massive difference in the two players' offense. Are you saying Hill is better at these other things a catcher is supposed to do to the tune of a .300 difference in OPS? And quite frankly, Soto's defense isn't that much worse than Hill's. I'm saying I don't know, and I don't think anyone else does either.

    Yeah, the biggest reason we didn't get beat is because the Sox are also not a very good baseball team.

    I don't know, I kind of feel like there aren't really great ways to measure the effectiveness of all the other things a catcher is supposed to do. Maybe I'm wrong. Our offense still sucks with Soto in the lineup (though that's hardly his fault).

    Dieser gruppe ist der scheissdreck. I struggle to think of players who I wouldn't be happy to see traded.
