  1. Wait. They hire people to race those things? I thought the whole idea was to have random people dress up and do it. Or corporate sponsor's kids. Or something.
  2. I think we're starting to see a few cracks in that theory. Yes, people will still show. But when the team isn't generating any excitement, the # of no shows is definitely going to increase. If years go by and improvements aren't made, I'll bet you will start seeing fewer initial tickets sold as well. I've seen a bit of a shift in the Cub fan base in the past few years. The Cubs have actually been a contending baseball team more than they were in past decades. The fan base has been more impatient, with higher expectations, than I remember. Wrigley's stature as a baseball altar will keep attendance from eroding to catastrophic levels, but there will be enough empty seats to cause significant pressure on the Cubs if they don't turn things around.
  3. Very true, I'm kicking around the idea of heading up to Chicago for some late season series if things keep going they way they are. Always wanted to have a great seat at Wrigley and not have to pay great seat money. Barring a miracle I'm betting someone with a little cash 5 minutes before first pitch is going to make out like a bandit. Or at least I've found that to be true in a slightly similar situation, Indiana University basketball. And if nobody will sell cheap, to heck with them. Hop on the subway and check out the Hancock building or something. It's not like you just missed out on great baseball. You missed late season slop from a crap team. Go have a beer at Murphy's. :-)
  4. Correct. I didn't mean to suggest that all they did was ride Buff.
  5. If Lou died they'd probably go all weekend at bernie's on us rather than fire him.
  6. Buff's specific playoff role will be a challenge to replicate with another player, maybe impossible. But they can still put some size out there. It pretty much is going to be impossible, at least with the current roster. The ability to stand out in front of the net and make plays is certainly a talent in its own right. But again, I'm not complaining about the trade. The value that we got for Buff was very good. There's more than one way to win hockey games. This year, it was because Buff was impossible to stop in front of the net. They'd have been fools not to ride Big Buff for all he was worth. Next year? They'll find something else. It could just be that we haven't even seen Tazer and Kaner's best hockey yet. Between those 2 maturing further, and Hossa, we might just be nigh impossible to stop, period.
  7. Suckfest baseball. Served up fresh right into your living room on the magic carpet of technology. Enjoy, everyone!
  8. I'm pretty sure that they had already moved the winner's second match to tomorrow. He's listed as playing in a doubles match sometime today. Might be a good time for a mysterious leg tweak to appear, which just as mysteriously disappears in time for tomorrow :)
  9. That would seem to make the most sense. What will they do with Huet? Demote him to Rockford and just eat his money? I'm not sure how all that works. Once the season starts, they can waive him and assuming no one claims him, he'd go to the minors, where he still gets paid but he doesn't count against the cap. In the meantime, he just sits there eating up the 10% a team can exceed the cap in the offseason. That's assuming that the Blackhawks are willing to pay him to play in the minors and use the cap space elsewhere. Most people are assuming they will be. Yeah. That doesn't sound too bad, although eating the money isn't great. I heard some speculation that maybe Huet wouldn't want to go to the minors, opting instead to return to Europe.
  10. That would seem to make the most sense. What will they do with Huet? Demote him to Rockford and just eat his money? I'm not sure how all that works.
  11. There have been many other season where the Cubs sucked. It's a little strange to hear a Cub fan pretend like he doesn't remember '06, for example, and call what is happening right now the worst he's ever seen.
  12. I don't know whether to hope for a quick, merciful ending or more drawn-out drama. Whoever goes through will certainly be at a disadvantage in the next round, I would think.
  13. He's back to Earth now. Wells was a nice surprise last year but I think we knew he wasn't that good.
  14. All you had to do is follow the Hawks through the regular season to know that Buff wasn't all that special until the playoffs came around. Not that performing well in the playoffs has no value, but everyone knows the Hawks were going to need to make sacrifices, and Buff was a good candidate. I'd say they aren't just new Hawks fans, but also poor sports fans in general if they don't realize this was a pretty good deal for the Hawks. Of course it depends on the draft selections, but to have a shot at acquiring good young talent in the draft for Buff and Sopel? That's a sweet deal for us. I expected much less in return. I'm hoping we only need to do one more deal. Not sure who it will be. Ladd maybe. Possibly Steeger. All in all, I'm pretty happy with how things are going so far.
  15. I'll be in Chicago July 17th and 18th, and I'm debating not even buying tix in advance. I'll bet there are some sweet deals to be had outside the ballpark day of game.
  16. This oughtta be a good game to watch if you are having trouble getting to sleep.
  17. I think that's the greatest blog I've ever seen, bar none.
  18. I guess this means the Marlins are about to go on a miracle run and win the WS.
  19. It's June 23rd. I'm kind of starting to look forward to late July now. Even though I don't really expect a great season. It will be nice to have football to talk about again.
  20. I wish they'd fire Lou now, but it appears that no amount of anything is going to make that happen.
  21. Kind of, yeah. I think you are basically wishing it didn't have to go down like that. So do I. But the reason it had to happen is more because Alex showed up where he shouldn't have, rather than because the Bears acted poorly.
  22. Definitely would understand the NFL forbidding it. Not just the NFL, but any sport. It goes hand in hand with the idea of tampering. I don't understand how this is a story, or how the tribune picked it up as a breaking news story and sort of agree he was being mistreated. He's got no reason to be there. I understand after 8 years with the org he still has friends, but if Alex wanted to hang out with some of his buddies do it at a club, bowling alley, etc, etc, not at another team's Home Office. I believe Alex should not have been escorted out of the building by security like a common thug, I think somebody like Angelo or Smith should have meet with him and let him know he isn't allow there (Bears HQ) anymore as he isn't a member of the org. But don't the Bears need to act quickly in that kind of situation? What if Lovie and/or Angelo aren't available? I just don't think the Bears did anything wrong at all in this situation. They need to follow league rules. And frankly, so does Alex. I always liked A Brown, but it seems like he just brain farted on the league rule, or was unaware of it when he probably should have been, and should simply drop it and move on.
  23. I would think any scenario that keeps us away from Germany would be better. Correct?
  24. Wow, sorry I couldn't watch that. Nicely done!
  25. A mere 4 pages per game now. You people have lost your fire, man.
