  1. Emotions successfully turned off. Cubs, little more than background music. Numbness, settling in. Lou and his crew coasting to the end. 2010, the year of nothingness.
  2. So yeah, they'd have to move Beasley. Or they can take less then the max. If Bron is leaving 30 million on the table with the Cavs what's a couple mil less a year? If they really had a conversation about teaming up in one place, surely part of that was fitting all the players into one team's salary. I could easily see one or all taking a bit off their salary in order to build the super team. The few million dollars in BBall salary pales in comparison to the championship legacy they would potentially be building. You make money off that for the rest of your life.
  3. I guess if the Bulls are willing to pick up some salary, I could see him leaving.
  4. It's a little more scary to face the Lions first game. You don't know what they are going to be. Plus, crazy things can happen in the first game of the season that don't really speak to the rest of the season. Plus I don't trust a Lovie team to be prepared out of the gate. There are reasons why the Bears may lose that game. Heck, the Lions might actually be decent this year.
  5. I'd take Jordan, but I cannot deny my own bias :)
  6. Winnning 5 is always better than winning 3. This is the same logic that makes Knicks fans think it's good that their team is awful. How is that really comparable to what Knicks fans say or do? There's no other big four sport where individual legacies mean more than what they do in the NBA. Good luck establishing your own claim to fame by being in D-Wade's shadow. If LBJ goes to Miami, he almost certainly will be Wade's partner in crime and not the other way around. I suspect Lebron would want to be the top dog, but I can't say I actually know him well enough to say for sure. I suspect he wouldn't care about the Jordan legacy, for example. It's hard for me to say how Lebron would feel about a partnership with Wade. I think you're right, there's an element where Lebron would be sharing the spotlight. But I don't know if Lebron considers that a deterrent, or and advantage.
  7. Yeah, I don't see that as Steinbrenner selling out baseball. He's allowed to do these things, and has the muscle to do them. The league needs to find a way to curtail it if they collectively don't want it to happen anymore. That said, I really don't like Steinbrenner. But I'd hold my nose and root for him if he was in charge in Chicago. It's a business proposition. :) You give me a championship, and I deal with the fact that I don't really like my owner. Much better than liking the owner and suffering through bad season after bad season. I hope Ricketts can be the nice guy who also wins. I really do...
  8. Shorter term, Wade might make more sense than Rose. Longer-term, I would think Rose makes more sense.
  9. I'll bite. What "should" it be about? And how does Steinbrenner sell that out? It's a professional sport...it's about winning. (After making a buck that is...) Indeed. Do tell, chuck.
  10. What Steinbrenner does is disgusting. It is downright un-American. I will not accept a World Series done the "Steinbrenner way". Yes you would. I'd accept it. There are many things I would deal with to win a WS title, at this point. Many.
  11. Well, there's a difference between signing 3 max guys, and the Heat signing LeBron, keeping Wade, and maybe pulling off a S&T for Bosh. I don't know if it still wouldn't be enough to get those three, but there's a distinction. I'd be interested in knowing what that distinction is, then. The NBA cap is more complex than "you have X dollars available, and max contracts cost Y dollars, so you can afford X/Y max players". I know. I guess I mean I'd be interested in knowing how they are going to do it, specifically. Especially since I haven't heard much talk about the Heat being able to do this up until just now.
  12. I'd say that represents a drop off of expectations for Luongo, although given his collapses against the Hawks, I can't argue that he was no better than Nabokov last year.

  14. Doesn't baseball do that already? I remember going to a Giants game a couple years ago and seeing a close play at first and I think the Giants fan I was with said they did something there. Not sure if it's done throughout baseball though. Most teams won't show a visitor team friendly replay on the jumbo. They spend all this time talking about how they shouldn't show replays to the crowd when the real problem is they don't have a system of review to get the call right.
  15. Were there people thinking a longer term suspension was likely? The term "indefinite" was thrown around, and can sometimes mean longer-term. I'm not expecting anything, or hoping for anything. I'm just numb, pretty much, when it comes to this club and this season.
  16. we're going to try to sign him... we traded for hamhuis and then dealt him away to pitt because he wasn't going to sign with us ($$$ being the issue, i'm sure). hopefully we can get something done with nabakov. I'm sure he's an upgrade because it would be hard not to upgrade from what the Flyers had. However, he didn't seem all *that* special to me. imo, leighton did a better job against us than nabby did. I thought Leighton was pretty bad at times. I don't know. I wasn't afraid of Nabokov in any way at all. He might be a good goaltender, but even with my limited knowledge of the game I'd raise an eyebrow if someone called him great.
  17. It's still an open issue and I can't say he's wrong until decisions are finalized and official announcements are made.
  18. Hard to even draw a comparison to any other league or situation because the NBA is sort of unique when it comes to player power in these types of situations. Really the only thing that keeps every team from groveling at LeBron's feet is the cap. Other than that, he can simply choose which team, which other players, which complete situation he wants. And, more than any other league, everyone will make every attempt to accomodate him -- even to the point of gutting coaching staff, rosters, etc. It's really quite amazing.

  20. Bears football starts revving up in about a month. Hawks hockey, just 3 months distant or so. This summer has turned into a baseball black hole. Other interests prevail.
  21. You get that close there's got to be a way to push it over the edge.
  22. If you thought maybe the Cubs would play well in this series just because, or because of some rivalry, or because they scratched out a win yesterday, or whatever. No luck, we still suck.
  23. I'm cautiously beginning to get excited now.
  24. I didn't think about the season ticket thing. You're right, they could make some tweaks there to attempt to get through a bad season or two.
  25. Yep. Believe it or not though, I do have faith that the Cubs will turn the club around before we reach the point where pre-season sales are dramatically reduced. I think they use that as a touch point to gauge how they're doing. If they see a big drop in interest in February one year, it'll spark major changes.
