    Then there's that whole, you know, possibility (hopefully strong) of winning the World Series as the manager of the Chicago Cubs thing in subsequent years. People still generally have a positive outlook for the Cubs' future. That said, I don't really want to waste money on a big name manager and I don't think Sveum needs to be fired, nor do I necessarily even think Girardi would be a better manager. Yeah, I get that the manager who wins the WS with the Cubs is immortalized. I just don't think next year is right in terms of timing, to become that guy. He would be walking in knowing there's a period of time that would be very frustrating. Possibly a lengthy period of time. Maybe he's OK with that -- or maybe Ricketts/Epstein would tell him something that tips the scales, such as new spending/focus on the major league level to cut down on the rebuilding time.

    He's won a World Series on the biggest stage in baseball. Now he's going to be happy to take over a developmental project and receive accolades for taking a club from 95 losses to 80? I'm having difficulty believing Girardi would do that.

    Chicago/Detroit, Seattle/Houston -- two very solid matchups in the early games. Thursday's game is suddenly interesting because the 49ers are suddenly human. Ready to get steamrolled, Philly? NE/ATL matchup should be good. DAL/SD -- potential for fireworks. Monday night -- more watchable than last Monday, for sure.

    Weird ranking system. Something nebulous and wishy-washy like "fan relations" is valued at nearly 10 times a more solid measure such as championships. I don't know about you, but win me a couple titles and you can have as crappy a website as you want. Isn't the ranking system based on fan surveys? I guess. I'm just not getting the value of this thing. It says it combines fan perspectives with solid objective measures but then seems to value the perspectives thing higher than the objectives. I'd do the opposite, or at least a more even distribution. Oh well, I'm probably missing something :)

    What now? Don't know. Must've been on TV. His latest article on ESPN is a fairly glowing opinion on how the Bears are handling the early part of the season.

Provided this is the truth, it's really not that bad an explanation. Stupid, but at least it's not him going out and getting wasted and then driving. I was expecting to read "toxicology reports are pending" somewhere in that piece. Good on him for not drinking or texting and saving the pizza! Team nutritionist might want to have some speaks with him later. At least he had something good to eat while waiting for the cops to arrive.

    Last year Melton was much better. I think the concussion issue really set him back this year.

    Why so you say LB? Granted Anderson and Williams are one year deals, but we're deeper than we've been in years, including with youth. Definitely agree on DL and CB though. You can always use LB bodies though. Special teams takes up a few and given the body type that Emery covets, big fast freaks, LB is easy to take. Also, Briggs is 33 this season. I wouldn't be surprised if he's not on the Bears next season, and would be surprised if he is on the Bears in 2015. They may be deep today, but that depth is easily eroded. True, but if Peppers and his contract are cut, I'd give DE the edge all other things being equal.

    Not that I don't love Jay for doing it, but that's the throwing shoulder. It would suck if he got injured on a play like that.

    I don't know, without the turnovers it's just horrible wide-open receiver after horrible wide-open receiver. They'll need to blitz. No question. But Tucker has got to have the right strategy with it. If he over-uses it, it could get really ugly.

    Interesting. Not many Lions fans complaining about the "Calvin Johnson" rule today.

    And then they turn to Wright and talk to him about...Cutler running over that dude. When he wins a ring the narrative is going to be how he learned from the NFC Championship and how it taught him how to be a leader and all that [expletive]. I will be too drunk to notice so it won't bother me. I'll DVR all the "human interest" stories and never watch them.

    Focus on the positives: when's the last time you could say the Bears are a legit "4th quarter team?" I don't know if it will last, but in all 3 games this year the Bears have put together some kind of 4th quarter drive to put their opponent away. That's a major shift around here.

    He is going to have to play like an all pro for the rest of the season if the line is going to have any chance minus Melton. With that said, Adam Hoge on Twitter said that Collins has outplayed Melton since training camp anyway. Is that true? Yeah, I don't know about Melton. I'm a huge fan of how he came up through the ranks, performed really well and got a pro bowl bid. But he was pretty much nonexistent in the early going. If he would have become the same player as last year (certainly possible), then he's a loss and we will miss that. But the guy who showed up in games 1-3 can be replaced by pretty much anyone. I hate seeing guys lose a season like that though.
