  1. We can't have a playoff, but we can have under .500 teams in the postseason. Sweet.
  2. I don't think I've ever watched anything on Versus until these playoffs. I don't get it. You have to get the 250 channel package to get Versus on Dish Network. That sucks. It's part of the basic package on DirecTV, I believe.

  4. Is Fukudome's contract not up after this year? Maybe I'm wrong... but I thought he signed a three year deal. He signed a four year deal before the 2008 season. He's signed through 2011 and will make $13.5 million next year.
  5. Dibs! Good point. I'd do it too. I meant a realistic candidate though. :D
  6. That doesn't make those people focused on the future, though. It might make Ricketts look a little better, but the new GM/manager are still going to make moves focused on the present rather than the future. That's not necessariliy true at all. First off, the manager is meaningless in this discussion. The question was about the risk of changing people before the draft and trade deadline. The interim GM, if you even need one, can be hired in that position with the sole purpose of keeping things moving properly, signing papers and whatnot. His power to trade young players for short-term help can be limited easily. So basically promote a puppet GM with no power whatsoever? It's going to be hard to find somebody willing to do that.
  7. I wonder how much input Hendry had in that move. I'd expect quite a bit. The scenario I imagine is that MacPhail told Hendry that he was turning the GM post over to Hendry, asked Hendry if he wanted Baylor to continue as manager, and when Hendry said no MacPhail agreed to be the hatchet man as his last act as GM so Hendry could get a clean start. I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's how it went down. Yeah, that's probably very likely.

  10. Sandberg could be in line for the job at some point, but I wouldn't be surprised if Trammel is also strongly considered for the position. Especially if there's a change at GM, I could see Trammel possibly being promoted to manager and Sandberg joining the staff either as a bench coach or as a hitting coach.
  11. Whatever coaching/GM change we make, I really hope the new manager keeps Larry around. Short of Dave Duncan it'd be hard to improve on Rothschild.
  12. He fired Don Baylor, I believe. Hendry was promoted the day after Baylor was fired. Ah, ok. I knew he was promoted the same year that Baylor was fired, but couldn't remember the exact timetable. I thought Hendry was promoted earlier in the year and Baylor fired later in the year.
  13. That sounds about right. Plus, frankly, I'd rather not have a front office shakeup prior to the draft and trade deadline. A front office shakeup may not have any impact whatsoever on the draft. And frankly I'd rather have people in here who care about the future instead of desperate execs looking to save their job with an 85 win season. If both Hendry and Lou were fired (or either, really), the likelihood would be that interim people would be put in their places. Those interim people would also be making moves with their jobs in mind, assuming they were auditioning for a job.
  14. He fired Don Baylor, I believe.
  15. Unless he's hurt. I don't think it's that odd for a guy this early in the year to still be a free agent. Most teams don't have a great need in the bullpen at this point, especially for a guy who had a WHIP over 2 so far this year. I expect a team to sign him, but doubt too many are hurrying to do it.
  16. Eh, I mean, he hasn't really been pitching him all that much has he? I despise Grabow, but this certainly isn't a repeat of 08 Howry. He's pitched on two days rest twice, one days rest twice, three days rest twice and no rest four times.
  17. Simple. Offer him food for every touchdown pass he throws.
  18. Bigger bust, him or Leaf? Russell got a ton of money, but didn't most people think Leaf had a better future in the NFL? Leaf was more highly thought of, I think. There were a lot of people who thought taking Jamarcus at #1 was a mistake. There were also a lot of people who thought the Colts should take Leaf instead of Peyton. In all honesty, I think a team with some stability at QB should pick up Russell. He's still got fantastic physical tools and if given some time as a backup, it might be possible to get him motivated enough to improve. A team could, at least, develop itself a solid backup.
  19. I think it's one of the things they started after the lock out ( I could be wrong on this). I guess it's an attempt to make the game more fan friendly or something. I'm pretty sure they have been doing intermission interviews with players for many years, long before the lockout. CSNC just had Keith on. Thanks. I'm not really crazy about them - they're kind of like ESPN doing interviews with baseball managers during regular season games.
  20. Is it common for interviews to be held with players during the intermissions? They just had one on FSN-TN and I found it odd since I've never seen that before in other sports.
  21. that is a very poor assumption. It's not a prediction of any sort, I was just adding Silva's contract in to bump up the payroll a bit more. It was to show that we could upgrade center field even with Silva's contract on the books. If his contract isn't picked up, we'll have even more money freed up that offseason (though one more hole to fill as well).
  22. Are you flipping from the Cubs game? Did the Cubs get out of the 6th with the lead? Nope. They got a run to tie it at 3.
  23. In that scenario we should have more than enough money to not have Fuld starting in center. We'd shed $43.3 million in salary in that scenario and gain whatever Fielder's (most likely future 1st baseman) contract is. Let's say $18 mil just to have a number to use, we'd have a payroll of (very roughly) $119 mil by 2012 - when all those contracts but Byrd's are up. And if we have cheap contribution from guys like Colvin and Castro, there's really no reason to have a plus defender with no offense in center field. That's also assuming Silva continues to pitch well and we pick up his $12 mil option for 2012.
  24. I like the Blount signing for the Titans. Kind of a similar player to LenDale and he will give us a nice backup running back battle between him, Javon Ringer, Stafon Johnson and ECU's Dominique Lindsay.
  25. i would say that his future is probably a 4th OF, but that it's not a given. he did hit legitimately well last year in a pretty good pitcher's league (tennessee) and has started out strong in spring training and in april. it looks like his eye has come a little way, and my eyes tell me that his swing looks less loopy and his bat speed looks better than when he was up for a cup o' tea last year. it's possible - though not likely - that he's experienced a breakthrough and is a better played than he showed through most of his minor league career. What - if any - impact do you think Jaramillo could have had on a potential breakout for Colvin? It may be purely a coincidence (or luck, or both) that Colvin is having his best year as a professional while learning under Jaramillo, but could it be that a more patient approach, coupled with any mechanical tweaks Jaramillo might have made, have led to a breakout year?
