  1. I have no problem with discussions about the Tribe, I predicted them to win the division. I know I've spoken highly of Shapiro and Antonetti as far as Clev's front office. If you want to brag or vent about the Tribe, feel free or any other team.
  2. Good question right now, I'll see what the plans are.
  3. He's skinny strong too, he's not stiff like Dubois. He has a quick bat and can generate power, I'd like to see how long his swing when they come to Beloit next week.
  4. But, if you have two players... .250/.375/.425 500ABs 125 Hits .300/.350/.450 500ABs 150 Hits OPS is equal to .800 for hitters A and B, it is a correct assumption that if they had the same baserunners on base in the same situation that player B will have done more as far as advancing runners.
  5. It should be noted a hit should weighted more than a BB when looking at OPS, simply b/c of runner advancement. I recently seen something that caught my eye... I've use adjusted OPS, but the additional (1-avg) adds weight to the batting avg. which makes sense.
  6. There's no doubt, that at various levels maybe the Cubs need better instructors, you have position players not developing and pitchers consistently getting hurt. This isn't a recent problem, this has been going on for quite some time. I'm not singling out one level of the minors, but this has be addressed. The reason for the decline as far as the Cubs farm system is a digression of international scouting. Even when the Cubs had the #1 farm system in '02, it all wasn't on Prior's hands, yCruz, Choi, Zambrano etc all within the top 50 overall according to BA, 3 international prospects. Now, they have 1 with Pie. I can understand the lack of an uber prospect like Patterson, Prior, or Wood b/c they haven't drafted in the top 4 since '01. But, I can't see why the international scouting has diminished except for budget cuts. Just b/c they lost Leon Lee as the Pacific Rim (to me) didn't have to equate cutting the entire Pacific Rim program.
  7. Riggleman also used computer reports on the opposing lineups extensively. I remember seeing him pour through green-bar printouts back when he was the manager. It's a great tool to use, some use it, some don't. I don't know why a manager wouldn't look at it, if you're trying to take a stand against "modernizing" managing, then you're making a mistake within itself without even getting into using all of the avail. resources. I think some managers rely on gut instincts only, there's nothing wrong with looking at data and then deciding if you should use that or go with your gut instinct, there is an option, it doesn't have to be one or the other.
  8. I'd like to them develop a plan, right now, I they're trying to win it all without enough pieces to do so, even at the start of the year. I don't Sosa's contract was the difference either. I'd like to see increase spending as far as scouting and signing international FAs, even at the expense of the ML payroll. If the Cubs dropped down to an 80 mil payroll and allocated that money to improving the pipeline, they'd be much better off than trying to plug holes w/ mediocre stopgaps like Hollandsworth and Burnitz.
  9. I'm voting Eric Patterson...
  10. Right now, they have 3 OF'ers, all 3 are playing below avg, and they have Neifi playing most of '05 at SS. If they had a solid OF or even an avg. one and someone who isn't a reserve player starting at SS, they could get away with an offensive hack/defensive whiz at C. But, even with an offensive C, they aren't scoring nearly enough runs. The Cubs are no position to sacrifice offense for defense at this point, it would be beyond stupid. I have no idea what they would try and get for him either, an OF'er or some prospects???
  11. I definitely think LaRussa is too much of a micromanager, but I'll never question him and Duncan's preparation for a game.
  12. The Cubs can't be dumb enough to try and emulate the White Sox offense and moves to their position players of a year ago? If the Cubs wanted to get somone as productive as Garland, Hermy, and Politte, while having Wood Zm and Prior stay healthy, then maybe the Cubs would take on a similar improvement as the Sox did. Improving the defense and team speed is going to make matters worse if that is at the expense of the the current offensive structure. If you can improve OBP especially at the top while improving defense/speed, I'm all for it. But, getting rid of Barrett and Walker would more than likely do more harm than good as far as scoring runs at the expense defense and speed.
  13. Why would you expect him to do better? Last year is proving to be the year he overachieved, not this year being a year of underachieving. There are plenty of pitchers who have the talent, but not the right mindset to maximize his talents, Marquis happens to be one of them. He's pitching about where you'd expect him to if his mind isn't where it needs to be.
  14. Once again, I will be furious if the Cubs don't play the youngsters, half the team is unproductive and the other half is injured. 3 players merit staying in the lineup right now, Lee, Walker, and Barrett (assuming Ramirez is on the DL). The rest you know what they can do and given Patterson's struggles, I'd like to see him out there for the remainder. But, I think we have a general idea of what Perez, Macias, Burnitz, & w Lawton can do. Their combined production does not merit preventing what other younger possibly more capable players from showcasing their skills. I figured this might be the only time Baker would start a rookie when he wasn't forced by the roster or injury, this isn't encouraging.
  15. He also did that in '03 with a decent pen and several years in SF.
  16. How about trading for Upton, then? :D It would be more likely that his little brother re-enters the draft after a year of JUCO and the Cubs select him after teams bypass him. Not that I would'nt mind seeing Justin and BJ!
  17. That fact that his stats have improved at all from his days spent in Japan is what has me scratching my head. None of the other Japanese position players playing in the US have done that, including Shinjo who was also a part-time player. I would just chalk it up to either fluke, luck, used in better situations, or ability to hit 2 seam FBs better than the 4 seamer. It does go against the norm, though.
  18. I wouldn't put too much stock into Taguchi becoming good. His batting avg. makes it seem he is more productive than he really is. He's ideally a 4th OF'er, that's what his stats suggest, he's been in the midst of seeing the ball well for the past month rather than becoming a .333 hitter. He's basically doing the same thing as he did last year with a little hot streak included. Nothing suggests that he's anything more than a 4th OF'er. I don't think he's overachieved, I think his style of hitting is better suited for the 2 seam FB, and he really hasn't improved that much statistically over his Japanese days.
  19. While that is a noble view, I don't agree in this instance. I think based on what we know of Bradley's personality, fair conclusions can be drawn. He is volatile, controversial, impulsive and loathe to accept responsibility. I would accept allegations of racially motivated behavior much more readily from someone with a better track record than I will from Bradley. That to me says you're discarding anything that has negatively happened to him in a racially motivated manner b/c of his several incidents where he lost control. His personality can't sway me from thinking he has been a victim of racism during his life, I don't think you can find an African-American who hasn't. He has a right to be on edge about racial issues, if I was a victim of racism, I'd be too.
  20. I hate when pitchers can't hit, a real Cy Young candidate would've gone 3 for 4 and been involved w/3 runs to give his team the W. Since his team was on losing end on the road, he only went 8IP despite getting the CG. :D
  21. Bradley has that right to interpret racial issues as he may. There are enough underdeveloped people in our society to merit that standpoint of focusing on race. Especially, given the history of race in America that is still on-going today. I can't criticize him w/out walking a step in his shoes concerning matters of race.
  22. The only problem I have with Bradley was the way he treated Wedge in Clev. I have no problem with him bringing up racial issues, why you might ask? B/c, they exist. The only things that concerns are those nitwits who decided to include race into their hate mail at Hawkins while he struggled. But, he lost his cool at a fan who threw a water bottle at him, walked over to the stands and slammed/threw the water bottle down on the ground, not at a fan. I'd have no problem rooting for him, just hope the Cubs have someone either on the roster or in the clubhouse that can help control his anger.
  23. Hypothetically, I'd rather have Bradley at this point than Kent, despite his baggage. Someone did a poor job of keeping that in-house. I don't see getting either one, but they'd both improve the team.
  24. BK, you're aware that BP did a study in their '03 Handbook? While less extensive, it was under the same premise of how players for some reason have played better under Baker.
