  1. You go by what you read in the paper what players about him in interviews. Everything I've read about players or seen from him is that he's an ideal teammate. Players don't go out of their way and says things like Larry Walker mentioned if he wasn't a quality teammate. If Todd Walker had issues with the club, I don't think they would've brought him back. Especially in that same off-season, they got rid of Sosa, Alou, Farnsworth, and Mercker for character issues. If they were "cleansing the clubhouse" why would they bring him back as a FA as they were getting rid of the bad seeds? It doesn't make sense.
  2. Yes, I also dated his sister. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6235153 The concept of a player who goes to multiple teams can be what they call being caught in a numbers game. There's one instance, everything I recall from Sanders is that he has been an ideal teammate throughout his career, despite playing on several teams.
  3. So basically whatever Hendry decides will be fine?? That's what I'm gathering from your argument. Where the heck do you get that? By stating the Cubs brought Walker back instead of Grudzielanek, I'll blindly support Hendry?
  4. He was brought back by the Cubs b/c in 04' the Cubs were too RH dominant offense. Needing to get some LH hitters in the mix. A goal for the Cubs is going to be get stronger defensively, IIRC they rank near the bottom of the NL in defense. So, despite that assumption of something beneath the surface like a character issue(as that posters implies) they brought him back b/c he hits from the L side? The Cubs are 12th in MLB defensive eff., better than their offense and pitching. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/sortable/index.php?cid=206 Where would they be if Nomar played @ SS all year? 30th?? Neifi's defense >>>> Nomar's. They would've taken a hit defensively b/c Neifi had a strong year defensively. 30th? You could put 3 Ozzie Smith's at SS and it wouldn't impact a team dropping 17 spots defensively. Of course, they would've spiked offensively and had a hitter that could produce in the middle of the order or hit 2nd.
  5. Wow, I'm glad to know that there is nothing wrong with Reggie Sanders because you say so. As to your opening question, do you really want to use as your argument the Cubs' prowess in judging a player's capabilities. Not too much success in that area these past 100 years. Yes, I want to judge Hendry's capacity to judge players on the past 100 years b/c of his impact with bringing in the DP trio of Evers to Tinkers to Chance, his role with Hack Wilson should not be forgotten as well.

  7. He probably wasn't 100% and still in the healing process.
  8. Why was he brought back by the Cubs? If there was something there that isn't seen with stats or whatever dumb statement that was, why would the Cubs bring him back? He was a FA, the Cubs could've very well brought Grudzielanek back, but wanted Walker instead. Look at Reggie Sanders, there's nothing wrong with him and he's being on too many teams to remember. Certain players have this trend throughout their career, he's a role player, role players often shift as team structures shift. Radical concept indeed. Stats didn't tell me that either...
  9. He'll get a contract closer to Renteria's than Cabrera's.
  10. I don't know what his velocity is, but the thing that hurt him was the HRs allowed with the Cubs in '05. But, how he has allowed only hits is the amazing part.
  11. The battle of who'll overpay the most should be interesting. Maybe the loser can't take a consolation prize of overspending on Damon?
  12. Braves followed by Boston.... It would be great to see a team like ATL win it all, rookies and all. Give Cox and Schuerholz more respect which they deserve.
  13. To get ready for the post-season, I'd send up Reyes when the rosters expand and use him to spot start once for Morris and once for Carpenter. Marquis will be the odd man out for the playoff rotation. This is how I'd plan the month of Sept. assuming everyone stays healthy as far as the pitchers... Sept. 9th-Carpenter starts... 2, 3, 4, 5 pitchers follow. Sept. 14-Reyes spot starts for Carpenter... 2, 3, 4, 5 pitchers follow Sept. 15th-Morris starts... 3, 4, 5, 1 starters follow Sept. 20th-(Carpenter returns on 10 days rest) Sept. 21st-Reyes spot starts for Morris... 3, 4, 5, 1 follow Sept. 27th-(Morris returns on 11 days rest) Sept 28th-Reyes starts and pushes Mulder start one game back. Sept 30th-Mulder starts on 7 days rest and should be limited to 75 pitches. Oct. 1st-Suppan starts on 6 days rest. Oct 2nd-Marquis starts the last game of the year... That is called preparation, LaRussa wishes he had the ability to do that. :)
  14. What was wrong with giving Ohman a shot? He is a better pitcher than Bartosh. I didn't see anything in Bartosh from the beg., I saw a flat 90 MPH FB and an avg. breaking pitch, there wasn't anything there worth trading for. I thought Hendry overpaid for another situational lefty. Bay projects as a 4/5, but that is a higher ceiling than Bartosh. But does Bay project higher than Nolasco? I don't think so. With Prior, Zambrano, and Williams as starters, and Wood, Guzman, Hill, and Nolasco as potential starters by the time Bay would arrive, what would his chances of making the Cubs starting rotation be anyway? At some point Hendry has to trust the drafting and development team he has installed to keep the pipeline of young pitching prospects flowing. Trading a player like Bay is part of maintaining a balanced portfolio of players for the present and future. Bay doesn't project as high as Nolasco, he doesn't project higher than Pinto or Marshall either, but if you work from the premise of trading depth, get something in return, try and improve a different aspect of your minor league system. You don't trade a player who ranked around 25-30 in your system coming off a season at Low-A based on future ML pitching depth for nothing.
  15. That's what I thought. Nothing mediocre looking about those numbers. People are complaining we traded away Bear Bay, while Berg has much better numbers (albeit at different levels) Unfair to compare them, but both went the JUCO route. Bay is a year older and is already pitching at AA after a successful start at High-A. At the same age, Bay was finishing up his 1st year at Low-A. Berg would've been a top 30 prospect for the Yankees, I imagine he'll be in 30-35 range for the Cubs.
  16. Those are actually pretty good numbers for a sinker/slider pitcher. Only 3HRs allowed, low BAA, high Ks.
  17. Yes, but so has Bartosh. If I saw more in Bartosh, I would not have minded the move, but I didn't see anything that projects him as a ML reliever. He couldn't locate his slider and had to depend on his FB. He has a deceptive delivery and nothing else. His results didn't dictate this being a bad move, his stuff did. He actually had very good numbers in the minors, but I can't see that translating to the majors with what he has.

  19. The Lawton trade really made no sense considering the consensus on this forum already was that we had no chance. AT the same time we had Murton doing good when he played for us. Hendry's move this year have been TERRIBLE!! Bay for Bartosh. Oh God that was bad. There's a difference between NSBB conceeding the Wild Card and the Cubs pulling the plug. Cubs needed a leadoff hitter, Lawton had a high OBP, he came cheaply, and the Cubs didn't sell the farm to get him. Murton was playing well for a manager who wouldn't play him over a soft hitting 4th OF'er in Hollandsworth. Hendry can't write the lineup card for Baker. Now, Bay for Bartosh that was horrible from the start.
  20. If they get rid of Walker, it'll likely lead to less production from a more expensive player. Which might be par for the course.
  21. Then the Cubs would be w/out a 2B (Hairston is not an everyday starting 2B), the Cubs have an option on Walker for next year, they should utilize it. He's underpaid for his production and is the only hitter on the current 25 man roster who can hit 1-2 in the order effectively.
  22. The only thing that makes this trade look bad is the production of Lawton, everyone thought it was a steal to send Gerut for Lawton. Lawton didn't produce and it diminished his trade value, I can't fault Hendry for the scenario of events. Ultimately, he does take responsibility for the moves, but the thought process involved can not be questioned. I don't think a productive Lawton makes or breaks this last month compared to what we saw.
  23. Of course, getting a PTBNL from the Yanks' farm system is like getting a clearance item from the dollar store.
  24. Well, that was a fun month of futility. Please let Murton play. More than likely, I think we'll see a platoon of Hairston/Hollandsworth.
