  1. That's pretty poor reasoning. really? why? they've lost every tinkered-with game. if i remember correctly, they shuffled the rotation to allow marquis (and not hill) to start against the brewers. they lost. hill was then nine days removed from his last start when he threw against the cardinals. they lost that game. and lieber, who took hill's spot in the rotation, got battered today. they lost. you really don't see how this rotation shuffle hurt the cubs? I don't think it's the reason they're 3-6. and i didn't say it was the reason. But your argument certainly implied it. Maybe if Hill took the mound every day... Nope, just every fifth game when Rothschild ignores him as is proper.
  2. No it isn't. But, why don't you read up on Jones a bit. You might sound less foolish. Let me help guide you, check on his dad also. i don't really care about Illini basketball. at all. I was just asking Thats odd because you always seem to have some kind of comment regarding U of I's basketball team. You know, like Penn States program passing the Illini's :D ZING!
  3. Agreed. Which is why, going back to the original point, I don't particularly believe him when he talks about needing Hill. I do believe him. I fully believe Lou wants and hopes the real Rich Hill shows up. I think it's fairly obvious that Lou doesn't much care for Marquis, and Lieber's pretty old and out of shape whereas Hill was an excellent pitcher last year. I think getting Hill back into form is more important to the Cubs (and Lou) than the endless debates about batting order. Oh, and keeping Rothschild from ever interacting with Hill again would be nice as well.
  4. You really have a one-track mind on this stuff. Different situations require different tools and provide for different results. He might have been wrong or lying about Cedeno, but this is a different situation. It's a situation in which Piniella is asked to identify which baseball players should get playing time in order to advance the team's goal of winning. He's not showing a real good track record in these situations. Circumstances change behind the scenes all the time. I know Piniella says things to the media that don't necessarily come true... but that doesn't mean he didn't intend to follow through with his statement. I don't agree very often with Lou's personnel decisions, but let's not get over the top about statements Lou's made. Criticizing the decision should be enough. Besides... you know darn well that athletes and coaches/managers give a lot of stock responses that are full of crap.

  6. He wouldn't need to be fixed if Larry remembered what happened the last time he tried to fix Rich in 2006. All true. But on the bright side, consider Lou's quote from the Trib: I think Rich will be back ASAP once he fixes his likely Rothschild-induced mechanical issues.
  7. Not really the same thing. 8th graders still have to go to high school for four years and graduate with a certain GPA and SAT/ACT score to play in college. The NBA can pluck a player out of high school or after one year in college.
  8. He's a very nice recruit for IU. He'll get a lot of playing time very quickly, and that probably put IU over the top (IU is also much closer to home). He was down to Minnesota, IU, and UK, but everyone seemed to figure he was going to Minnesota with IU in second. Amid all the noise and chaos, Crean (with an assist from Dakich) has quickly cleaned house and assembled a nice recruiting class for next year (some were Sampson recruits who stayed with IU). The group of Tom Pritchard (6'8" C/F), Matt Roth (6'3" SG), Nick Williams (6'4" SG), Devan Dumes (6'2" SG), and Verdell Jones (6'4" PG) is a solid group of guys -- Rivals rates Pritchard, Roth, Williams and Jones as 3 star recruits (Dumes is a JUCO transfer with no rating). If Crean can add Maurice Sutton, a three-star 6'10" C, I'll be a very happy camper... what am I saying... I'm already a happy camper since Sampson is gone and Crean has cleaned house since coming on board. But, boy, if Crean can add Sutton... that would really be a boon to IU. 2008-2009 will be a tough season, no doubt, but they won't be as bad as many people are predicting.
  9. Likewise, Marquis was incredibly lucky that Duncan's blast in the first was snagged by Lee. That would have scored two runs, easily.
  10. And we have another appearance of the Pie rumor from BP... Ignoring the Piniella aspect of Perrotto's previous rumbling, he's posted a second time that the Padres are interested in Pie.

  12. I think the QB talk might be overblown given the flashes Grossman has shown. I think if the gives him time, he'll be above average. I don't think Rex will ever be great, but he'll be better than most teams have. That said, I do not disagree with goony. It is important to refresh the talent pipeline at QB. I doubt the UFA's will be worth much, and if they prove to be worthless, the Bears should look to draft a QB next year REGARDLESS of how Grossman does.
  13. I'd call you GT, and we'd blame you for everything.
  14. How long will Josh Fields last in the draft come June?
  15. I was mistaken in my headline -- it was Perrotto, not Carroll. That said, I have no idea how good Perrotto's sources are.
  16. I haven't seen a post on this as yet, but I thought I'd note that in the NL rumblings section of his 'Every Given Sunday' column on Baseball Prospectus, John Perrotto notes that: There's no sourcing, of course. I tend to doubt this, given what we know of the situation, but I thought it interesting nonetheless.
  17. Generally-speaking, yes. I've long been in favor of an 11 man staff, with the 11th pitcher doing the AAA shuffle as needed. For the '08 Cubs (pre-Eyre injury), that would have been Wood, Marmol, Howry, Lieber, Eyre with Wuertz, Hart, Marshall, Pignatello shuffling back and forth to ensure a fresh reliever.
  18. Wow. We went from some great posts and some very good analysis to ... this.
  19. Who all is going to Friday's game? For various reasons, I cannot make Sat. or Sun., so this is the only one for me this year. Mrs. Brinoch and I have seats in Section 113L and will be garbed appropriately in Cub gear.
  20. Tim managed to summarize one of my posts from last night into two sentences which are both clearer and more succinct than my rambl-a-thon. :D
  21. In support of abuck's rage is Baseball Prospectus...
  22. No, we shouldn't. Murton is a solid hitter.
  23. Indeed, it would be very nice to get some production from Soriano when some of our guys come back to earth.
