  1. So I'm dumb? Personal attack. Someone ban this guy. Give me a break.
  2. Isiah Thomas or Jim Harrick to IU?? =P~ There's a lot of talk that Tony Bennett is the favorite for IU. There is also a LOT of Pitino to IU chatter, as well.
  3. Matchtracker says Donovan missed a 1v1 breakaway against the keeper.
  4. Well, it's 2-0 US at the half... can anyone tell me how they've looked. I'm at work and unfortunately cannot watch.
  5. Yeah, that's generally not a good sign.
  6. Yes, actually. There's a significant school of thought in negotiation theory that says the ONLY power in a negotiation comes from the willingness to walk away from the deal. When the original offer is not accepted and you demonstrate your willingness to walk away, you increase your power. By leaving it on the table, you are demonstrating your lack of desire to walk away and weaken your position. Actually, neither of those statements are a true take it or leave it approach. And the take it or leave it school of negotiation is but one approach, and one that probably doesn't work all that well in a very small community where people can have extremely different valuations of players and you are dealing with a physical commodity on both sides rather than money. I completely agree, however, that at some point you have to be willing to walk away from a deal -- and Hendry's probably done that. (I can't believe I'm actually defending him.) If you aren't willing to walk away and the other side knows it, you get fleeced.
  7. Look, I seriously doubt that Hendry left an offer on the table for three months. But, so what if he did? Leaving a trade offer on the table is, for all intents and purposes, exactly the same as walking away and telling them to call if they are interested in resurrecting the deal. You are going to start from the same spot in negotiations regardless. I mean, think about it... if you say "That's my final offer, take it or leave it," and they say no and you break off negotiations, only to resurrect them two months later, is: "That's my final offer. Let me know if this will work. Take as much time as you need," so very different?
  8. Pick the best hitters (and that includes Murton) and keep them for the team. There's no reason that you can't go with 2 OFers and 1 IF on the bench to start the season. If there's a little injury to an IF and you're worried about them missing a few games but not going on the DL, send Hart or Murton down and bring up Fontenot or whoever. I think getting tied down into having so many IF and so many OF on the bench is silly (and I've long advocated using 6 bullpen spots and yo-yoing 2-3 pitchers between the Cubs and AAA). Moreover, though he's not brilliant defensively or anything, it's not like Soriano can't or won't play 2B if it's needed. If, say, Ramirez and Theriot go down in a game, you move DeRosa to 3B, Cedeno to SS, Soriano to 2B and Murton to LF. Big whoop. Cedeno, Theriot and DeRosa are (in a pinch) interchangeable among 3B, SS, and 2B and Soriano is your emergency 2B. Sure, you won't want to do that everyday, but for part of one game? It's fine.
  9. He's 23 years old, hit 24 home runs last year, and is moving out of one of baseball's worst hitters parks.
  10. Hendry also gets criticized for bidding against himself, too. Personally, I don't see huge a problem with this strategy other than the waiting; it's more or less just walking away (without saying you are walking away). In part I agree with you, Goony. Baseball is different than a house or a job. Excellent players are extremely limited commodities that have no agreed upon value or even a common value basis among the various teams, so making a deal is hard and the importance of moving with celerity is obvious. Still, as long as you aren't increasing your deal, leaving a deal on the table for consideration is fine. But don't let the other side draw more out of you and don't cease looking for other options. In short, don't let it distract you or your team.
  11. I have to think that someone is going to make a waiver claim on Vargas.
  12. I'm sticking with the NL only strategy again. I have to handicap myself a bit so I don't make this embarrassing for everyone. Or something.
  13. I gotta fix this one... I was really wondering who Erine was.
  14. A. Ryan Howard B. Ryan Braun, Matt Holliday C. Aramis Ramirez, Hanley Ramirez, Pat Burrell D. Chase Utley, Ryan Zimmerman, Troy Glaus, Jason Bay, Miguel Tejada WC -- Mark Reynolds As per 2007, NL Rules!
  15. But this topic deserves much conversation. It is actually cathartic to watch Baker mangle the Reds. I feel for their fans... NOT!
  16. They're going to wait until tomorrow for the trade because they don't want to distract the media from news about Roberts' back.
  17. As much as getting Roberts could be an upgrade, at this point the Cubs should move on. Go get an SS, instead, and make Theriot your utility guy on the bench.
  18. Portugal? Why there? (wikipedia wouldn't tell me) The Portuguese league is ranked #6 in Europe behind La Liga, EPL, Serie A, Ligue 1, and Bundesliga -- the top leagues of Spain, England, Italy, France and Germany -- which is good enough for 3 Champion's League places. Benfica is the largest club in Portugal and usually among the top 3. The talent level at Benfica (as well as its opposition) is much, much superior to MLS and really gives Freddy the experience he needs against top flight players, both at practice and in games. Benfica is experienced at developing talent, and will likely bring him along at a good rate. The style of play in Portugal or Spain is also very conducive to the development of an offensive-minded player like Adu.
  19. Sure, it might have been a one-off. But if you're hiring a coach for the USMNT, and you can choose between Klinsmann and Bradley, who would you take? Or, put another way, would you rather have McLaren or Klinsmann?
  20. I'd venture to guess that most White Sox fans think Crede is better when he's healthy. I'd venture that those people are all idiots. Crede has no business being compared to Ramirez, ever. What's even funnier is that Crede gets props for GRIT, but Ramirez plays hurt most of every season and gets ragged on for being soft. If only he could grow a mullet... hispanic guys don't have grit Exactly. Only middle class white guys can have GRIT!! Wait a minute.
