  1. Considering my mom is from MO, and pretty much her entire family still lives there, I think I have as much right to make fun as anyone. Don't worry, I think much more highly of those from Misery than I do of those from Minnesota. Besides, they did back out of a 4 game deal with Iowa at the last second. Less than 6 months before the first of those, IIRC. It doesn't really matter at this point. Missouri would have probably beaten the Hawkeyes like a drum in that series anyway. As chance has it, the series was scheduled during one of the few times in the past 30 years that Missouri actually had a football team that could beat Iowa so it ended up hurting Missouri more than it helped. Its a good thing Iowa is on top again.
  2. Yes...very funny.
  3. Yup. In almost every instance, someone running on the field is just drunk and looking for attention, but there have been enough instances of players and umps being attacked that it shouldn't be tolerated. It's really not hard to understand. If you don't want to get tasered at a baseball game, all you have to do is stay somewhere in the stands. Unless the cops want you to do anything but sit still in your seat. Not that this guy didn't deserve it, but... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXkwa9uFBss&feature=related
  4. I was thinking the same thing as I watched the game yesterday. I remember a talking head (I can't remember who) referring to Soriano as an early season MVP candidate after one of his hot streaks early last year. He then proceeded to bat about .100 with no homeruns over the next six months (only a slight exaggeration). I hope he can keep it up, or at least not go into the tank for extended periods. The Cubs need good Soriano to have much hope of getting into the playoffs.
  5. He had to have been standing in foul territory to make it into the field level seats.

  7. FWIW, Olney's blog entry from the 25th stated that Cruz was not placed on waivers on Friday as reported, but was supposed to be yesterday. That means he would not clear waivers until Wednesday.
  8. I guess this kills the Howard for Pujols deal.
  9. I don't think you can serve while on the DL, at least with short team suspensions. I remember there was a big argument about Kerry Wood back in 04 and how he was injured and still had to serve 5 games after he was healthy enough to pitch. I think Barrett had the same issue back in 06 after decking AJ Eyechart. I don't think theres a way to prove or enforce that but I think if it's sketchy timing, the league is going to be on you for it. The easy workaround for that would be to declare he is now healthy enough to pitch and activate him. I don't know if it could be done, but the way around that is to suspend him after he pitches at least one full inning in his next game. It would effectively take him out until August. I imagine the union and/or the Reds would balk at that.
  10. Not to just be argumentative, but really, the umpire has final control. And that's a variable that hasn't been mentioned in this either. 3-2 count. Pitcher throws a ball at the outside corner, that the batter doesn't swing at. Is it a ball or a strike? Walk or strikeout? Given or taken? Maybe it's not just pitchers that are "giving" walks, but umpires too. A pitcher could throw the same pitches in the same spots with one ump and get 75% strikes, while another with a tighter zone could only call 55-60% strikes. It adds another complication in the "give/take" equation. It would be a variable on a day-to-day basis, but it would even out over the course of a season or a career.
  11. That's what he gets for eating two Big Macs for a pregame meal.
  12. Just one? He forgot to put per half inning. Two girls get left holding their hands each game. A third gets left out when the home team wins. Not necessarily. Ok...sometimes.

  14. I'm an Iowa fan and I see no reason Iowa would be ranked higher than eighth or ninth in the Big Ten right now. Iowa may have the worst recruiting area of any Big Ten team, and hasn't been able to snag the few top recruits that have come out of the state. The facilities are Big Ten-average at best. Iowa City certainly isn't a "destination", unless drinking is your game. The fan base support is certainly near the bottom of the league. As far as prestige, the last ten years has eroded a lot of the prestige Iowa built up during the previous 20 years. To my memory there have been no more than two or three Top 25/NCAA tournament caliber teams during that time. One of those teams (the 2002 Recker/Evans debacle) underperformed so much that they settled for a short-lived NIT bid. With this being said, there isn't that much separating Iowa and the four or five teams above them. The right coach can win there, but it certainly cannot be considered a top job at this juncture.
  15. It's too bad this didn't happen ten years ago. Then Steve Alford would still be at Iowa and be able to point to his long streak of NCAA appearances (and first round losses) as proof of his success. Instead, he has been relegated to New Mexico (with a top 20 team) and Iowa won't make the tournament anytime in the foreseeable future.
  16. I believe that I heard that the contract for the tournament is up and the expectation is that ESPN will get all of it. They have enough networks that every game will be able to be shown everywhere. You can bet that ESPN is one of the driving forces behind this change.
  17. Tebow isn't around to heal him?
  18. See you in 2014 once Soriano is gone. I knew, heck we all knew, that the Soriano contract would hamstring this organization during the last few years. That doesn't mean that the Cubs can't find ways to be a winner. It just makes it more difficult. The Bradley situation is much more difficult for me to swallow. To me it seems that the GM of the Cubs has to make trades and signings that are going to help the club. When considering this trade it would seem fairly easy to determine what should be done. Are the Cubs better off with with Bradley and his baggage or are they better off with Silva and his suckiness ples pay an additional 4M? Any GM that thinks the Cubs are a better team with Silva needs to be fired. Immediately. I've been a Cubs fan for nearly 40 years and the last 15 months have been just about as bad as any I remember (along with 2004-2006). There have been worse teams and GMs, but to have brief hope and then lose it all again so quickly is disheartening.
  19. Boise, TCU, BYU, Fresno, Houston, Southern Miss would be a decent starting point for a new BCS conference. 2011 might be a good year to get them if they have 21 returning starters next season. I doubt a majority of those starters are fresh/soph.
  20. You're entering Tebow territory now.
  21. Nope. Its genetic.
