  1. [tweet] [/tweet] Could it be? A major league contract?
  2. I agree but I'm assuming that Hinch and Luhnow are going to be blackballed, at least for awhile, because of this. Assuming they were the ringleaders behind this, I would guess any other GMs or managers would at least hesitate before deciding to possible cheat this blatantly in the future.
  3. Guess he cost too much money [tweet] [/tweet]
  4. Have to say that the NFC was terrible this year
  5. Wait huh? He was the one that reported it earlier today. Is he saying he misspoke or did he hear something new since his first report?
  6. It’s a tiny morsel of excitement, let’s hold onto it and never let go even though it makes absolutely no sense given the info we’ve heard all winter.
  7. Well let’s see, the harshest penalty ever given out was a lifetime ban
  8. lol....... They are pissed off about the union, so they move to CHICAGO?
  9. KB was a Super 2, so he's going through his 3rd arb with a 4th on deck for next year. If his time weren't manipulated, he'd be going for a 3rd and final time. So he didn't lose a year of arb, but I do think the player comps used to determine his salary would have changed, likely for the more expensive. So in the event he were to win I imagine that there would be some sort of $ component in addition to the earlier FA. Makes sense. I retain a passing knowledge of the arbitration process but fine with not going into too much of the details. Appreciate the explanation.
  10. Low hanging fruit but $1.5749 million too much IMO. Yes I'm suggesting that he be paid $100 for his services this year.
  11. Random question but if for some reason the arbitrator ruled in favor of KB in his grievance and he was given an extra year of service time, wouldn't that make him entitled to the correct arbitration raises as if he was being paid correctly the entire time? Like for instance, if his service time wasn't "manipulated", he would have had his 1st arbitration year in 2017 instead of 2018 (or 2016 instead of 2017, cant remember exactly how it works), but instead he was paid like a pre-arbitration player. So while he might be getting the benefit of going to FA a year early, he was still grossly underpaid for 1 season. Also now that he settled for arbitration based on his 2nd arb year, then if he wins the grievance he should be paid as if it was his 3rd arbitration year. Most likely, the fact that he settled means that he knows he's going to lose the grievance right? (I could be completely misunderstanding arbitration years fwiw, I am assuming that each arbitration year was a sliding scale that increases by year)
  12. Nothing really new in this article but if you like reading articles that have a TL;DR of "WTF Cubs?" here is one from The Ringer: https://www.theringer.com/mlb/2020/1/10/21059296/mlb-chicago-cubs-free-agency-cold-stove
  13. Actually that's a good point regarding Anthony Davis. Now I don't know if he will actually consider the Bulls no matter how coy he is being about his FA, if you wanted to lure him a complete regime change in time to make a few moves to make the roster look better before FA starts might be a direction worth considering. You can sell him this was the first impactful action by Michael Reinsdorf and the primary reasons for the bad reputation the Bulls have (Jerry Reinsdorf and GarPax) are gone. Of course Michael Reinsdorf has been running the show for several years but he doesn't have to know that...
  14. I'm not holding my breath, and even if it does happen how confident can we be that Michael Reinsdorf will be able to find the right person. When will this change happen? If they've decided that GarPax isn't their guy anymore, do it today before they screw up another trade deadline. I mean realistically the Bulls are not in bad shape if you remove GarPax from the equation. They have the team in a great cap position, they have fairly valuable trade assets, they have talent just not superstar talent. I don't mind crediting them for doing that. The problem is that I have no faith in them from here, barring getting lucky on a draft pick turning into a superstar. The fact that they replaced Hoiberg with Boylen without talking to anyone else and then doubled down by extending him for no good reason tells me all i need to know about their ability to turn around this team. Pax (removing Gar here) does some things well, I credit him for the baby bulls plan that worked, I credit him for clearing the cap space and having the team in a position to sign LeBron and Wade in 2010 even though it didnt work. I credit him for consistently having the team in good financial shape. But we just need a new voice for the organization. 1 ECF appearance in 17 years isn't cutting it...
  15. I'm confused about "still" being the best team? I mean its certainly debatable but our 2nd best reliever right now is Rowan Wick and our position player and rotation depth is not great. Still have the top line talent and with solid seasons from the core we should be right up there, but I find it hard to call us the best team at this point.
  16. Maybe this isn't the right topic to post this under...By my math, there's aprox. $75.6M coming off the books from last year, which includes players no longer on the roster and any salary decreases (i.e. Lester). And there's aprox. $41.8M in additional salary, which includes salary increases due to both contracts and expected arbitration increases (as projected by MLBTR) and all of the minor signings. So, that leaves approx. $33.8M decrease in money spent on salary from last year. Is there something I'm missing? Is there another reason other than they don't want to spend money for that amount of decrease in spending??? No. There is not. Wasn't most of Zobrist's salary erased last year? That only accounts for a small part of it but the number is possibly lower than $33.8m. What I dont understand is that I don't think the Cubs exceeded the luxury tax by a lot last year, but apparently are still projected to exceed it this year despite losing Zo, Strop, Cishek, Hamels, Russell, etc
  17. I think I'm rooting for Seattle and Minnesota next weekend. I really like when highly unusual circumstances occur in sports, and a Wild Card team hosting a playoff game is pretty damn unusual...never happened before.
  18. Seriously. I did not agree with the 10 second run off to save the TO but whatever. Why do you kick it with 7 seconds left and that TO still out there? With Drew Brees at QB. Let him put one in the corner of the end zone. If he gets sacked you use the TO albeit with a harder FGA but to me the risk is worth it.
  19. Kyle Long is either retiring or is being cut and announcing it on twitter but his wording suggests that he’s retiring. How much would that help the Bears cap situation vs simply being cut?
  20. Yeah he’s largely been the same player every year since then. I get being worried about the injuries but he isn’t really a different player now vs 2016. Maybe he’s lost a little speed. 2015-2016: .285/.378/.524 .385 wOBA, 143 wRC+, .240 ISO, 11% BB, 26% K 2017-2019: .284/.390/.511 .382 wOBA, 147 wRC+, .227 ISO, 12% BB, 21% K You can debate that on the offensive side, but his defense has certainly declined and the metrics bear that out. Guess that would explain why the offensive numbers are pretty similar but he’s gone from a 7 win guy to a 5 win guy
  21. Not sure what article this is from but it’s interesting to see the perspective of other teams re: Bryant Edit: found it, from a Kap article: https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/cubs/why-cubs-and-theo-epstein-havent-done-anything-offseason?amp&__twitter_impression=true
  22. Seems like an overreaction to a one point conference loss They haven’t played well since beating TTU. They almost lost to NW and lost their first 2 conference games at home to unranked teams. Big East is stacked so can’t really afford to lose the easier games at home even if they are still formidable teams. They could still play more like they were earlier in the season but it’s been trending downward lately.
  23. Looks like DePaul remembered that they are a Chicago team and, um DePaul
  24. I don’t know what’s worse - trading Bryant or bringing back a considerably worse roster because they can’t trade him
