  1. I get that half the team is in the IL but is having a shortened bench worth the chance that Rizzo might be available 1-2 days before his IL stint is up?
  2. After today, the Cubs next 17 games are against 1st place teams (6 vs SD, 4 @ NYM, 3 vs. STL) or against a team that’s 12 games over (4 @ SF)
  3. Their RD is now +31, 9th best in baseball. No where close to to the Padres at +86 but there’s starting to be a gap between the Cubs and most of the rest of baseball (10th best is the Yankees at +18)
  4. Oh come on. how many ways are the umps going to screw the cubs out of a run this inning?
  5. sounds like they could have initiated a review if they wanted to, but just like that SNB game last week they chose not to for some reason.
  6. unbelievable. potentially game changingly bad call
  7. Brothers hasn’t pitched in 10 days which is bizarre.
  8. I think someone was asking the other day about the record for longest scoreless stretch for a bullpen. I couldn't find it, but I did see this after the game: That's insane. Gotta give a lot of credit to the Theo and Jed for figuring out a way to build a very strong bullpen from scraps (and Kimbrel). I mean people like Tommy Nance coming in from the fringes of professional baseball and becoming a key contributor in close games, prospects who toiled in the minors like Steele figuring it out and becoming key pieces (Steele had some success in low minors but the last time we saw him he had a 5.50 ERA in AA). Crazy to see.
  9. haven't seen the Bote HR yet but given the wind and the discussion of the ball Joc hit, should I assume that Bote's hit would have gone 500 ft on a normal day? Or was it just a line drive?
  10. Did strong play inspire that move? I had always been under the impression that the bullpen being a catastrophic pile of suck led to that move. We also traded for Castellanos 7 weeks later with Theo basically talking Ricketts into forking over a couple million to pay for him. There were quotes after they signed Kimbrel that basically said that the Cubs strong play of late gave them the confidence to go out and make the move. At the time of his signing the Cubs were in the middle of an 11-2 stretch. Of course Zobrist's personal issues clearing payroll space played a big part as well.
  11. The last time strong play inspired the FO to go out and improve the team in season they signed Kimbrel who sucked and the Cubs missed the playoffs for the only time in the last 6 seasons. (Of course I want them to improve the team, my brain just connected those 2 things when I read the quote from Jed) Anyways, that's great news. We could really use an ace quality starting pitcher and a backup catcher. Any idea where we can find that?
  12. I think the Pirates TV broadcast is even better: https://streamable.com/oskwmc
  13. Right! It's not a run down..Javy can't be 'safe at home'. I counted 6 different idiotic things the Pirates did on the play: 1. Not stepping on first right away 2. Not more aggressively running towards home 3. Throwing to the catcher 4. Second baseman not covering 1st 5. Catcher not immediately running towards Javy while he was making the safe gesture 6. Errant throw to 1B allowing him to reach
  14. Game threads are so sparsely populated these days that its hard to get a good read on how a game goes by reading them. Just because no one replied 'hey nice job getting out of the jam and picking up your teammate Tepera!' doesn't mean we only enjoy discussing when the Cubs do poorly. It's worth discussing how that imperfect waiver wire pitcher was pitching the 8th inning of a 1 run game because Ross for some reason pitched both Kimbrel and Chaffin in a 3 run game last night, both for the 2nd game in a row, rendering them unusable. It's worth discussing that the guy with the sterling ERA but shaky peripherals immediately got into major trouble (hat tip to Javy too) and couldn't finish his inning. We also spend basically an entire page marveling at Javy's magic work, so its not all bad here.
  15. I told you, the Cubs do not want to score 6 runs against the pirates and will sabotage themselves to make sure they don't
  16. Contreras is really gunning for Rizzo's TOOTBLAN king title. That's the second completely ill advised unnecessary base running play in a week. The last one was in a blowout so whatever, this one prevented a runner from being in scoring position in a 2 run game. Ugh
  17. 0.53 ERA (including today) 3.45 xERA (not including today) 4.32 xFIP (including today) I actually somehow expected it to look even worse
  18. Walk Sharp grounder up the middle Flyout HBP Walk Nice work Winkler
  19. Not sure if Javy was trying to give back to the Pirates when deciding to make that throw that was completely unnecessary and wildly inaccurate. But at least they got an out.
  20. Winkler could pitch 75 scoreless innings in a row and I'd still expect him to enter the next game and walk the first 2 guys
  21. The Cubs are allowed to score more than 5 runs against the Pirates right? It's like they make it their personal mission to win every game 4-x. They get to 4 and just give up
