Why do they automatically put the host country in Pot 1? I get that playing at home gives some advantage (heck even South Africa almost advanced out of the group stage) but in years like this it’s an unnecessary advantage given to 3 lucky teams in the other pots. (Permission to erase this post if the US draws Qatar)

Costa Rica goes 6-1-0 in their last 7 WCQ matches with the 1 draw being at Mexico. Pretty impressive.

We didn’t even play bad. We had good chances early. Felt like once we gave up the 1st goal we were like meh and it turned into a glorified friendly.

I wonder how much of an adjustment period Suzuki is going to have? He's 0-9 with 5 K so far in the spring, which I wouldn't think twice about normally but it seems like there would be an adjustment to increased velocity going from Japan to the MLB. I could be talking out of my ass though lol

I don’t see the downside right? Maybe pisses off their club teams a little but at the end of the day we haven’t clinched however unlikely it is for Costa Rica to score 6 times on the US.

Canada might be into Pot 3 now with Ghana slotting in behind them instead of Nigeria barely in front. They should also be pulling for Mali and of course North Macedonia. Speaking of which, Portugal took a lead, so the USA to Pot 1 dream might die at step 1. Need that miracle comeback from North Macedonia but Germany is up on Netherlands

The official website looks like it localizes it for your location if you scroll down: https://www.fifa.com/tournaments/mens/worldcup/qatar2022 So the 4 group stage time windows appear to be 5 AM/8 AM/11 AM/2 PM Eastern time. Qatar doesn't do daylight savings but they seem like they're accounting for that if my time zone math is right. Knockout stage games are all at 10 AM and 2 PM Eastern Dont love the 5am matches but the rest are awesome. The World Cup is a great 'throw on at work' event in my office.

Interesting thread about the parallels to the 2018 Bills who had a new GM take over with a somewhat similar situation. Doesn’t mean that the Bears will end up like the Bills but it gives me a little perspective at least

I’m not terribly high on Patrick Williams but think the ceiling is still there. There is no one drafted 5-11 that I would definitely take over him. Halliburton at 12 is the first player and he was always considered a late lottery pick. Hard to blame AKME too much there. I also think a 19 year old that just missed 5 straight months needs a little more time to evaluate than 5-6 games.

Sucks because he looked so good at times toward the end of last season. I know illini fans were expecting great things from him. Seems like a good dude so I hope he finds somewhere good to land and can thrive

My fear is they evaluate him based on a garbage roster and then cut bait. But if Fields is a legit great QB I’m thinking he shows enough despite the deficiencies to move forward with building around him. I’m perplexed about some of the stuff this offseason but I’m already seeing articles suggesting that Poles should be fired lol

This is a good point. Although I'm sure CR would love to win 6-0, they have to be realistic and play for the best shot to get in, which would be the playoff. Apparently yellows from qualifying carry over so it makes sense to sit any of their guys who have yellows during WCQ

If that happens do you play the game in Costa Rica with a neutral strategy and then go uber conservative if they go down by a goal or two, or do you bunker from the start?
