Daniel Greenberg is reporting that the Toronto Blue Jays, currently holding the second Wild Card spot in the American League, are showing interest in Marcus Stroman. It would represent a return to Stroman's roots, as he came up through the Toronto farm system and has played the majority of his career with the Blue Jays. -

Yeah, you’ve always been consistent that whether it works or not tanking sucks, which I totally get. It’s also probably not as great of a way to build a contender as people think it is. The Cubs may have won due to tanking, the Hawks might have gotten a generational talent doing it, but many more teams have pissed away 5+ years tanking and have nothing to show for it. What did the Bulls get for pissing away a half decade? LaVine and 1 playoff win basically. Their tank netted just 1 pick inside the top 6, and that was in a really shallow draft. The Sox got 2 playoff wins for their long tank and are looking to sell off now. It’s a lot of misery for a small chance at payoff. -
CLE and STL 300 game winners was harder than I was expecting. Thankfully I remembered from previous grids that none of Sabathia, Feller or Gibson got to 300 wins. Remembered Phil Niekro had a spell in Cleveland and took a wild guess that Cy Young played for the Cardinals.

BTW on Bellinger, yesterday was only the 2nd Cubs game I've been to this year and for whatever reason watching him in person gave me an added appreciation for his defense. His breaks on balls are almost always quick and accurate. His arm is crazy. Not sure how it appeared on the broadcast but he caught the one fly ball while backtracking away from 3B with a runner on 2nd and 0 outs. The runner tagged and he turned and had what looked like an effortless throw that ended up making to 3B on the fly and if more accurate may have had a chance to get the runner. Not very many CFs in baseball that make a throw similar to that. Fun guy to watch, especially when hes hitting.

Did the Cubs look at Justin Turner at all in the offseason? I remember his name floating around as a potential target. He's a butcher on defense at this point so may not have fit the type of team Jed was putting together but his bat would have looked really nice on this team at a position of need. He would be 3rd on the team in OPS by a wide margin over the 4th best player if he put up those numbers here.

By no means is it a bad move at all, or even a decent move. It was a good move possibly very good. But the only way it would be an amazing move is if his 2023 production helped lead the Cubs to the playoffs or we got an elite prospect for him in a trade. Otherwise he's just a guy who had a good year here for one season (or a half season) and got a massive contract elsewhere.

Not that Bellinger has been terrible against LHP in his career, but like most lefties his numbers have been noticeably lower against lefties before this year. (something like .850 vs RH, .767 vs LH) This year before the grand slam, Bellinger had a 1.063 OPS against LH and .792 against RH. Obviously a small sample size though (77 PA against LH)

Just reading down a quick list I pulled up. Certainly wouldn’t say no to Matt Chapman.

I noticed yesterday that Mastrobuoni has a total of 1 RBI in 78 PA this year. That projects to 8 RBI (rounded up) over a 600 PA season. Edit: And that 1 RBI came on April 4th

Damn there really are a lot of them. Makes me wonder if I should start my mental searching each day by thinking about former Cubs that may have played for the other 2 teams.

Trying to guess which ones you were referring to. I got: Rarity score of 30 today and it wasn't even that hard with the former Cubs tip. Obviously once I had 4 fairly rare selections I was going for rare picks the rest of the way like Dale Murphy and Alan Trammell over more obvious picks, but they all came to me pretty easy.

Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who has followed the Cubs closely but we rank 27/30 in terms of WAR for drafted players since 2015. Some of this is likely because we drafted lower from 2016-2021. Some of it is we don't get small market comp picks. But sad to see how poorly we've done. Theo will always be considered a success because he got us what we wanted, but I can't help but also feel a bit disappointed (and to be clear disappointed doesnt mean I think he failed by any means) which makes me feel guilty because I recognize that he also oversaw the most successful run in franchise history. We thought we were getting an Andrew Friedman type guy that would have waves and waves of prospects coming to Wrigley, but we actually had one wave and then development fell off a cliff.

Well I guess we learned that we can’t just pick 20 random Americans from the MLS and win our continental championship. We drew against all 3 of the teams that we played with a pulse which I guess is not terrible, though Canada was playing a B team and Panama a B+ team.

Backed myself into some trouble by making Ichiro the Mariners ROY pick, and then got stumped for a few minutes on the Marlins/Mariners player until Logan Morrison came to me. Also poor White Sox, all 3 of their boxes have really low accuracy numbers (49%, 49%, 53%)

Yeah the official line is that while the Cubs have been bidding for it since like 2009, the renovation of Wrigley was typically still ongoing until the sportsbook was completed which it was a few weeks ago. Now that the renovation is 100% done, the Cubs are expecting to be given a game. Hopefully that happens soon....the 4 teams pushing for it are the teams with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th longest waits between ASG (with longest again being Oakland) and the team that hosted it in 2000 but was awarded a recent game and had it (rightfully) taken away due to politics.

Induced weak contact on the first 3 hitters, one of them dropped in for a hit and one of them took a great play to get the out, then struck out the last batter. All in all he repped well as you said.
