    Honestly, I'm pretty content with Soriano, Pie, and Floyd most days. with DeRosa, Fontenot and Theriot taking turns playing SS and 2B

    Fontenot had solid PECOTA numbers coming into this year... as for the "legitimate starter FA signees", Wells sucked last year and he sucks this year. The only surprise was that he didn't turn into Carpenter (yet). By legitimate I meant that they are real starters instead of converted bullpen arms. As for Fontenot, we all had high hopes for him, but he didn't seem to be anywhere in the Cubs plans.

    Are we the new Cardinals? Bringing up minor league players that are projected to make only a minimal impact in the bigs and they flourish, starting pitchers with mediocre career numbers turn out to flourish on the Cubs. Meanwhile, all the Cardinals players are getting injured, their rotation is made up of converted bullpen people, and their worst pitchers are the legitimate starter FA signees that they've brought in

    That actually looks like a moderate, certainly not easy, schedule: Padres - Best pitching staff in the league, even if we miss Peavy, best record in the NL and has owned us in recent past. (My prediction: 1 of 3) Rangers - Just beat our division leaders 2 of 3, still have a decent offense, Sammy will be inspired, and our strength is pitching, which goes to die in Texas (2 of 3) White Sox - Like you said, throw the records out, I have a bad feeling about this series (1 of 3) Colorado - Certainly not an easy team like you seem to be suggesting but still (2 of 3) Nationals - OK they are pretty bad (2 of 3) Pirates - Certainly not pushovers, and have good pitching (1 of 3..just a gut feeling) the 29-37 NL East Nats are pretty bad, but the 28-38 NL Central Bucs are no pushovers. Sosa inspiration. "bad feeling" about the White Sox. gut feelings. holy negative subjective analysis batman. OK, I'll admit that the Nats record suprises me. We handled them quite easily. But the Pirates aren't a terrible team, and their lefties Gorzelanny and Duke (who sucks unless he plays the Cubs) will trouble us. And yes, bad feelings and gut feelings, so what? My opinion. The basic gist is there isn't a huge talent disparity in the league, and that the schedule the Cubs face is certainly not easy.

    How did this really kill you ?? It happened 12 years before you were born !!! :wink: I shared the following story with Milt Pappas when I met him some years ago. I was driving north on I-94 (this was about 3 years after Milt's no hitter) from Chicago to Milwaukee in a tractor/trailer when I came upon a big black Lincoln Continental that was being driven by some guy that weighed at least 350 pounds and had a Wisconsin tag that read "NL UMP". As I passed that car, knowing that Bruce Froemming was a native of Milwaukee, it took every ounce of restraint that I had at my command to keep from suddenly changing lanes to the right. To this day, Pappas can't say the name Froemming without his lips curling into a sneer !! The sooner Froemming retires, the better off the world will be. 11 years but point taken!

    This guy was a huuuuuuge Cub tormentor in his career. I, for one, applaud his decision to get the heck out of the game and leave the Cubs alone. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6924504 Everyone knows about his part in the recent Lou Piniella dirt kicking tirade, and some people remember his calling Kenny Lofton's catch a "trap", scoring the only Braves run in Game 5 of the 2003 NLDS. The one that really killed me was the 1972 game where Milt Pappas' perfect game was ruined by a borderline call being called a ball with 2 outs in the 9th. The next batter grounded out weakly, and the no-hitter was preserved.

    If you think that's bad, Juan Encarnacion was batting clean up the day before. Yet, as mentioned in another thread, people STILL PITCH TO PUJOLS!!! WHY?!?!?! Probably because they are usually up by so many runs, it just doesn't matter anymore.

    The prime time to hate the Yankees was like 2002-2005. That is when they signed or traded for just about every big name they could come up with, Sheffield, Giambi, ARod, Kevin Brown, Carl Pavano, Randy Johnson, Johnny Damon. Since then they have started to develop some of their own talent, have cut back on the spending and started to realize that just signing every high priced talent wouldn't be enough. But the bottom line is that they still have the highest payroll by like $80 million, they are completely overexposed by ESPN and the national media, and they still have many players that people simply love to hate, whether it be steroid boy (Giambi), Mr. 250 million/slappy/metro (ARod), and traitor (Damon). So for that and the fact that they are one of the most successful teams in American sports history, they will be hated for some time.

But still for $34 face value they are worth posting about for Cubs fans. Just figured at least a couple of people that assumed that it would be too expensive to go would find this info beneficial.
