  1. RISP, time to immdediately go down 0-2 in the count.
  2. Can't know if it'll fit in the budget until the sale goes through. I'll pitch in a buck. If every Cubs fan in Wrigley right now would pitch in a buck, we might just have enough money to get everyone on the team one. If every Cubs fan in Wrigley pitched in a buck, they could pay for 4 games of Soriano's salary.
  3. 27 RBIs is good for 100th in the league.
  4. I'm thinking you're right. Don't be too down on them...the Cubs have already scored more runs this series than the last time we played the Twins. In 2006 we scored 3 runs in the entire 3 game series.
  5. are we sure that was actually kouske and not a cardboard cutout of him?
  6. There must be a crap load of twins fans there. I was in my backyard and I heard a super loud cheer. I normally don't hear cheers from my house all that loudly so I assumed a Cub did something really good. Upon checking my phone I see it's a twins homer.
  7. Positive thought of the day: I only had to go back 3 seasons to find EIGHT different examples of teams with similar or worse starts than this Cubs team only to come back and win at least 89 games and/or make the playoffs. 08 Dodgers 28-30 08 Brewers 30-28 08 Mets 42-44 07 Yankees 38-41 06 Twins 25-33 06 Athletics 28-31 06 Padres 32-31 06 Dodgers 47-55 Some of those teams added players, some of those teams won weak divisions, and some of them just plain old got better. So while it seems like half our team is bums and it seems like the offense will never hit again, just remember that you don't have to go back far to find other teams that felt the same way only to have it turned around at the blink of an eye.
  8. I swear I thought that shot off the crossbar with 3 minutes left or so went in. I had to watch the replay 3-4 times before I believed it actually just hit the crossbar and bounced out. Just think, 1 inch separated the Wings from most likely winning the Cup there. It's a bit of a stretch, but I had to believe an OT Game 7 is won by Detroit. Congrats to the Penguins, that was a really enjoyable Game 7...probably not among the all time greatest, but really enjoyable nonetheless. And now we don't have to hear about the Blackhawks being the last home team to lose a Game 7 in the Finals.
  9. I just flipped over to MLB Network and saw that....LOL. Wow. Stupid Mets giving the Cobs new ideas on how to lose games. :hello: Not that the Cobs need new ways to lose games, but wa happened? 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. Mets up 1 run. Yankees had runner at 1st and 3rd. Easy popup in shallow right field. 2nd baseman Castillo goes back to make the easy catch but clanks it. Tex was the runner on 1st and he came all the way around to score the winning run. Memorable, but not as epic as losing a game when two runs score on a sac fly. Ahh, the 2006 Chicago Cubs. Makes this team look like the '27 Yankees.
  10. The joys of interleague play. The only time you will ever feel like there are too many visiting fans at a game at Wrigley are Cardinals games, and games against AL teams. Sometimes Brewers games nowadays. They see the @ Cubs on the schedule back in February and plan a weekend trip to Chicago to see their team play at Wrigley. It happened last year when the Cubs played the Orioles. When the National Anthem was playing, whenever they say "O say..." all the Orioles fans said "O" in unison to match the word in the song. I guess its some dumb Orioles tradition, but when they did it, it was loud and noticable.
  11. Normally I'd say it shouldn't be hard to find cheap tickets on the street if your willing to wait it out, but there will be massive swarms of rabid DeRosa fan boys/future Mrs. DeRosa's that will be out there looking for tickets to be in the mere presence of The Great One.
  12. Is our curse that bad that even players that are rumored to come to the Cubs have bad things happen to them? First he almost gets traded to methville and now he's hurt.
  13. Bradley's postgame comments were weird. Said something about having a hard time tracking the ball in the sun, and then he just looked towards the crowd and was still seeing "purple and green clovers" and just threw the ball into the stands. Then he realized something was wrong by the crowds reaction. He finished by saying that his heart was in the right place (giving a souvenir to a fan) he just made a mistake.
  14. What's entertaining about today? We finally scored at least a few runs, and the pitching finally gave up a few today. Both were bound to happen eventually, but of course in typical Cub fashion they happened in the same game. I would have been more interested in seeing his comments if we lost another 2-1 extra innings game today. um...yeah...we didnt um.....play very good baseball today. uh....the kid....um Wells had a bad start so....um.....yeah........the team isnt....um....isnt....theyre not playing very good baseball lately. More like "Well...we finally scored a couple of runs today, and then...our pitching staff picked a bad day to finally have a poor game. It's just the way things are going for us right now, what can I say? We're gonna try to build on today's offensive performance after the 5th inning today and try to get em tomorrow." His opening statement to the press conference will probably sound like that. The thing is though, 3 runs does not a good offensive performance make. 4 runs, and I agree, but 4 runs would have won 9 of the Cubs last 13 losses. Lou has been way too rational this year...he will search for a silver lining and say that he hopes we can build on the offensive performance today.

  16. Certainly not this year, or next, or probably 2011. It'll be a while till we have the financial flexibility to make the moves necessary to win it all again. People said it wouldn't happen for a few years after 2006. There are tons of variables that could happen. One of our prospects could suddenly emerge into a young star, we could make a trade and pick up some important pieces, the new owner might want to make a spalsh after his negotiations ruined this season and tell the management to throw more money at FAs, the team could overachieve next year instead of underachieving this year, etc etc. Also, its possible that we get our heads out of our butts and put it together this year. At worst we're 3.5 games out of first after today. I've seen too many teams play .500 ball for 80 game stretches of the season and then make a playoff run to count out the Cubs no matter how inept we look right now.
  17. He only has 3 more guaranteed years. New owners are generally more likely to axe a guy despite that much time on his deal. They can fire him and still make him be a scout or minor league guy, which is where he had his success in this organization. And it's not like anybody would have to be admitting a mistake. You're talking about costing the team maybe a couple million to hire another GM while Hendry is still under contract. Yeah, I neglected to mention the new owner angle, which is very viable, because it killed my argument and I already typed my post out and had my cursor hovered over the "Submit" button, so yeah.
  18. How could you not be looking forward it, what with all the hilarity on the field and such..... At least you know that with every fly ball to the outfield, you have a chance of having a ball thrown to you.

  20. I'm with you. I'm not all for booing players for poor performance. But poor effort and not even paying attention absolutely deserves it. You guys think Milton will support Hendry when he gets fired after the season? I mean, he's going to be a major reason in Jim getting fired. Hendry isn't nor does he deserved to be fired. I agree he isnt getting fired, but Id like to know why he doesnt deserve to be fired if this season keeps going the way it is. I think it has to do with the 4 guaranteed years after this one that Hendry is due based on the extension he signed last offseason more than anything. If you wanted Hendry to get fired your best chance was last year, and he ended up having the best year of his career at the GM position.
  21. Loaded with 0 outs. Too bad the Cubs can't hit for the Twins here. Bob is ripping on the Cubs for being careless in the field.
  22. The player they get doesn't have to match Hendry's salary. Given the state of the Trib and also of the Cubs team, I wouldn't be surprised if Hendry was encouraged to drop some payroll if at all possible. I can't really think of many more players that have both value and a tradable contract on the Cubs. you still haven't answered the question. where are we going to put a bat? 2B is the only place we can really upgrade, and like i said, i don't see any potentially avilable 2B that would be worth giving up our best starting pitcher (this season) for. people keep talking aobut wanting to get a bat, but they never say where he's going to play. we're locked in at every position but second base, shortstop, and catcher..... and we're not going to find upgrades at shortstop or catcher. Second base, third base, right field. It doesn't have to be a guaranteed starter. If you can find a player who can play 3B until Rammy is back and RF when Bradley is hurt, needs days off, or is ineffective, that's a player to look for. Also any player to avoid Miles or Freel to be in the lineup, or Font vs. Lefties is fine by me. I more than realize your point is that the Cubs are paying superstar money to fill every position but 2b, 3b and C. We need to give the offense a boost wherever we can get it. Taking Miles, Freel or Font vs. LHP and replacing with someone even mediocre to the team. Anything to avoid Fontenot, Hill, Miles and Blanco being the mainstays at 6-8 in the lineup everyday. Will it solve all of our offensive problems? No. Bottom line our big money hitters need to improve in order for this season to have any meaning. But that doesn't mean there aren't still other areas where we can approve.
  23. lol That comment is a bit outlandish, but he's up there amongst the best pure hitters in baseball. When you factor power in there then it's a differnet story. Then again, in only 37 games this year he has taken his game to a new level. He already has 12 HRs, only 1 off his career high (in a year he played 140 games). He also has driven in more runs in 37 games (36) than any Cub has driven in this year over 57 games (27). He's been good...very good.
  24. Those are depressing numbers... This team is so uninspiring. Not to bring up the DeRosa word, but I was just looking at his numbers. It's obviously stupid to compare his stats and assume that they would be the same on the Cubs, but for the sake of my drunken stat posting, humor me. If DeRosa was on the Cubs this year he would have... The 3rd highest BA on the team (min. 100 ABs) at .274 The most runs on the team with 40 The most RBIs on the team BY FAR with 42 (Soriano is the Cubs leader at 27!!) The 2nd most HRs on the team with 10 (leader is Soriano with 14...next most is Lee at 7) The 3rd highest OPS on the team (min. 100 ABs) at .797 The 3rd most doubles on the team with 11 The 3rd highest SLG% on the team (min. 100 ABs) with .452 The 3rd highest OBP on the team (min. 100 ABs) with .345 Blah blah blah. I know get over it DeRosa is gone. But its fun to see after a slow start he's putting up pretty good numbers while the majority of our team makes us want to cut ourselves.
