  1. I'm guessing he's just smart and setting the price very high.
  2. BTW, that new Russian Nets owner plans on spending 3/4 of the season in Russia. Where's the outrage?
  3. I thought I remember reading Saturday or Sunday
  4. South Korea ties it up blah
  5. Outside of simply making his presence be known (show up in the bleachers every once in a while?), what specifically can Ricketts do in Chicago that he can't do on a boat in Africa? I'm sure he's keeping very much up to date with the goings on in the standings and with attendance. Why do you think it's important that he be here? Please tell me this isn't the meme going around on talk radio? It's the first I've heard of this.....I think we should stop discussing this before someone picks it up and eventually it does go on talk radio.
  6. Wait that doesn't make any sense. How can Nigeria advance if Greece beats Argentina? In that scenario Greece and Argentina both have 6 points and Nigeria 3 Oops, meant Argentina win. Argentina would have nine and the other three would all have three points. Ahh yes I just figured that out. Seems like the most likely outcome at this point but of course as long as Nigeria is beating S. Korea, there is no incentive for Argentina to win.

  8. Because they were the 3 droughts of epic proportions. Nobody cares about the Giants not winning in 50 some years, people knew who Willie Mays was. All the Cubs, Red Sox, and White Sox guys were dead or banned Doesn't explain why you used a 20 year window, mentioned three teams and an 8-0 record. It's two teams and it all took place within the last 6 years. Cause 20 sounded better but 25 included Red Sox losses 24 would have sounded really badass.
  9. Well I am not sure, but like mentioned above they were the entire NHL for a ~25 year span so most older people (65+ years old), grew up with those teams only. For some reason, the majority of those teams claim a ton of tradition and very little change in logos, uniforms and colors. Besides the Hawks and Rangers, they all have a ton of championships too. When you think about it, there are only 14 NHL franchises that pre-date the 1979 WHA merger and have stayed in the same city since then. In reality there should be an original 14: Chicago Blackhawks Detroit Red Wings Toronto Maple Leafs Montreal Canadiens Boston Bruins New York Rangers St. Louis Blues Los Angeles Kings Vancouver Canucks Philadelphia Flyers Pittsburgh Penguins Buffalo Sabres Washington Capitals New York Islanders For historical purposes, the Kings, Canucks, Sabres, Capitals and Islanders have drastically changed their logos/color schemes since their inception making them seem slightly less historical. People love the idea of going to a hockey game or watching one on TV and seeing the teams in the exact same jerseys as they were wearing 30+ years ago. Theres something very old timey about that I guess.
  10. On this subject, I was listening to the Score yesterday (1st mistake) and a guy called in and was asking if it was possible to send some of the Cubs down to the minors "to show that the Cubs management means business" or whatever. So whoever the host was (Holmes?) was humoring him and asked him who he'd send down if he could and his answers were......... Carlos Zambrano and Derrek Lee. When the host questioned him on it he gave the typical Z has a screw loose and doesn't care about winning or something. And when he asked about Lee, the caller admitted how much of a class act Lee has been, and that he would never want to embarrass Lee, but sending him down to the minors was the right move to show the team that they aren't going to put up with poor play.
  11. This is confusing....the teams who had the longest pennant droughts in 1990, have gone 8-0 in world series games once they got there? The Red Sox didn't have a drought after they swept in '04, so all that enormous pressure they felt with the curse was gone, allowing them to sweep the '08 world series The Phillies won the 08 World Series? But yeah obviously that's what happened. Cowboy up and Kevin Millar got the Red Sox through it while Don't stop believing and AJ Pierzynski's dropped 3rd strike play got the White Sox through it. I think the Cubs need Joe Esposito's "You're the best around" and Julio Zuleta back as pitching coach with his slump busting techniques to get us over the hump.
  12. This is confusing....the teams who had the longest pennant droughts in 1990, have gone 8-0 in world series games once they got there? The Cubs (0-0), White Sox (4-0)...and who else? The only other team to make one WS appearance between 1990 and 2010, or sweep their first WS appearance post-1990 was the 1990 Reds, who went 4-0 after a 14 year drought (1976) inbetween pennants. Were the Reds really the 3rd longest pennant drought in the league in 1990? I figured he was talking about the Red Sox and White Sox, not sure why he is using a 20 year time frame, an 8-0 record and a 3 team grouping. Oh and what really threw me off was pennant drought, which historically means winning the league and advancing to the World Series. I should have realized that's what he meant.

Were the Reds really the 3rd longest pennant drought in the league in 1990? Edit: no, the Indians went from 1954-1995 without winning the pennant, and the Braves went from 1958-1991
  14. Do people understand that spending money on Wrigley Field's bathrooms doesn't affect the payroll in the slightest bit. He's not saying "Hmm we could sign a better SS, but I'm not gonna lie, I'm a big Cubs fan but I'm an even bigger bathroom guy. I could not live with myself knowing that my fellow Cubs fans are using such shoddy facilities. I'll work on winning next year I guess.....unless there are more bathroom improvements to make!"
  15. The general feeling that I have is that Ricketts has enough money to safely run a ballclub with a $140 mil payroll, but when attendance sags down to 30,000 a game (not saying its there or could ever get there without multiple down years), I think his margins get a lot tighter and maybe the payroll drops $30 mil or something. So I am not sure why people think that not going to games is going to "show ricketts" anything. I generally believe he wants to win and will show it when he has an opportunity to. But he can't and won't spend $160+ million to do so. So there was nothing he could do this year, other than maybe fire Hendry, which we'd all love. More importantly than that, I'd love to clean the entire front office out and start over. If you want to start fresh and really signal a new era of Cubs baseball, doing that would be much more effective than buying a few ballplayers.
  16. Games that stick out for me 10/7 @ Colorado - First game of season 10/9 vs. Detroit - Home opener/Banner raising night 10/13 vs. Nashville - First game against Nashville after playoff series 10/20 vs. Vancouver - First game against Vancouver after playoff series 11/1 @ NY Rangers - O6 team 11/24 @ San Jose - First game against San Jose after playoff series 1/23 vs. Philadelphia - Only SCF rematch of the year 3/5 @ Toronto - O6 team 3/13 @ Washington - Revenge against Ovechkin? 3/29 @ Boston - O6 team 4/5 @ Montreal - O6 team....no O6ers at home besides Detroit this year damn. 4/8&4/10 @ Detroit/vs. Detroit - Our typical home and home against Detroit to end the season. Playoff positioning.
  17. Niemi, or Huet? What would sending Niemi down accomplish? Obviously meant Huet. I'm brain dead today.
  18. The same thing was said about the Red Sox. Yeah but they were able to Cowboy Up. What could we possibly do to match that?
  19. France got one point - they tied Uruguay. Duh....my bad.
  20. Well it would be fun to root for, but at least it would be nice to see RSA go home with a win, and France go home with 0 points and 1 goal scored all tournament. That would have to put them close to 32nd out of 32, but I think North Korea will probably win that designation.
  21. Dammit
  22. Capgeek isn't working for me right now, but I think that roster is doable *if* the players vote the escalator in and *if* Niemi and Hjalmarsson sign a little on the cheap side of projections. I'm assuming Niemi has to be sent to the minors or to the KHL to make that happen...or is that a foregone conclusion at this point?
  23. If you made a $100 bet that France's coach would be fired after the World Cup, how much would you get back if he was? $5?
  24. you may have lebron james field, but we have lebron james speedway This is getting silly.
  25. Dammit so Carlos Silva is the reason we suck.
