  1. You are surprised that the Cubs didn't give up prospects to acquire a 33 year old player whose numbers have deteriorated and is a FA after next season?
  2. LOL I just clicked on page 42 and read the first 2 posts and thought "I bet it was WSR".
  3. San Diego is just so pesky. They won't go away!
  4. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-0624-anthony-rizzo-cubs-chicago--20120624,0,6809614.story Damn it. I'll have to go Tuesday too if this is the case. How you suffer !! Have you been to many games this year?
  5. Is it bad that Soriano has a higher OBP than Castro despite having a BA that's 35 points lower?
  6. I didn't mean to imply that Shark is now garbage. Yes he's been bad the last month or so, but when he was on to start the season, people were praising the movement on his pitches and his control. Rick Sutcliffe picked Shark #26 in a 'who you would build your team around' draft. The guy obviously does have talent and his pitches are good..it wasn't a fluke that he started so well (back me up here FIP guys), but there's probably going to be a few bumps in the road. Maybe he'll just keep on sucking and we can call him a bust, but I think its just as likely that he gets it going again and becomes a reliable starter for the next few years
  7. If the Cubs can't come back from a 6-1 deficit, then in Shark's last 7 starts he's 1-6 with a 6.18 ERA with a 1.61 WHIP Edit: Wait, I was assuming the runner on 3rd with 0 outs would score. He'll only be 1-6 with a 5.94 ERA and 1.61 WHIP
  8. It's certainly reasonable to cry broke when you have to sell your house and cars because you cant afford them anymore. I mean yeah no ones gonna feel sorry for him but to him he's broke. The reason I look down on him for claiming he's broke is because he could easily make at least a chunk of that money back. Even though a lot of people can't stand him, his personality and celebrity allow him access to high levels of income that the average person don't have. And of course there's always investing what he has left, which is a gamble (as he now knows), but if you play it relatively safe he can at least make more money off the money he has. If all else fails, he can bet against the Nets for an entire season.
  9. I hate when that happens. You meet someone who is a Cubs fan while living far from Chicago and are initially excited to have another Cubs fan to talk to. Then you find out he's a meatball who has no idea what's happening on a week to week basis but still loves talking Cubs. Now everytime you run into him he's excited to bring up the Cubs and talk about how mad he is that Tony Campana isn't playing everyday. Eventually you try to avoid the dude whenever possible because it's more annoying than it should be to engage in conversation with the meatball.
  10. Oh man, that Cuban stuff is awesome. He is really hitting on the reasons why the sports media sucks nowadays. It's all groupthink of generalized stories/typecasting of individuals and teams. You can go through so many teams and players and come up with a 1 sentence description of how they are painted in the media. LeBron James (until the Finals) - Great player amazing talent but doesn't have what it takes to be a winner Kevin Durant - What is right about the NBA, great player and even greater guy. Will predictably take LeBron's crown as great player who can't win. Chicago Bulls - 1 superstar and a bunch of role players. Great regular season team but not enough offensive star power to go all the way San Antonio Spurs - An aging core with a group of unheralded role players molded into a team by the great Popovic Kobe Bryant - A winner, personification of Michael Jordan And whenever ESPN brings up these players/teams, its like the same conversation every time. "The Bears are great but they are only going to go as far as Jay Cutler takes them and he's not a winner" "Crazy Rex Grossman does nothing but throw interceptions" It's not that these generalzations don't have a hint of truth to them but its just the same recycled conversation and there's no original thought involved, no understanding of why this is the prevailing thought, and very few people willing to offer an opposing theory unless their job is to oppose all popular thought (Skip Bayless).
  11. I guess, but I'm kinda ok with the disagreement being with the 4th or 5th best team being pissed than the 2nd best team. At least we've moved the discussion further down the "ladder". What if a 12-0 Boise State left out after winning @ MSU, @ TCU and vs. Utah. Of course you could make the argument that they should have played a tougher schedule, then BSU fans say they tried, and we're left with the exact same argument as before. What is Boise State really is the best team that year and don't get selected? What if there are 5 teams with 1 loss and relatively similar resumes, to the point where the number 1 team could just as easily been 5. I know these are a bit of extreme scenarios and many years there will be a clear gap between 1 and 4, but as soon as something like the above happens, there will be controversey. And the first time a 4 seed wins the title, there will be more scrutiny towards the selection process.
  12. http://www.sbnation.com/nba/2012/6/21/3109494/dan-gilbert-cleveland-cavaliers-lebron-james-miami-heat Holy crap, dude has lost it. "I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS HIS SECOND" Yeah ok. Maybe if you didn't get him Antwan Jamison, Delonte West, Larry Hughes and Mo Williams he would of stayed. You do know that wasn't a real open letter from Dan Gilbert right?
  13. Wow, the Hawks finish with a home and home against the Blues. The last season the Hawks didn't finish against Detroit was 2006-2007.
  14. They've been tinkering with the BCS formula for years and still haven't gotten it right...that's what worries me the most about doing it that way. They usually tinker the formula whenever an injustice occurs so it happens a year late. With the selection committee, if there's a clearly deserving team that for whatever reason doesn't do well with the computers, you have a chance to fix that immediately, instead of a year too late. I'm sure one of the reasons why they are doing this is because there is more drama for more teams going into the last weeks, as opposed to having (hypothetically) 3 undefeated teams and 6 1 loss teams. In previous years, the team who is last in the BCS 1 loss team totem pole has pretty much no hope unless they have a huge game left to play or there are a lot of upsets above them. With a selection committee, each of those teams have hope that they will be selected. I dunno, I'm not in love with the idea of a selection committee, and I know they are going to [expletive] it up at times, but I can also see some benefits to it in theory.
  15. If the Heat have a commanding lead tonight, I am turning off the game and not turning the NBA back on until the draft....which is strangely enough a week from today.
  16. that's awesome...was it hard to get tickets to each of the events? I really want to go to an All Star game at some point in my life, although I hear it's rather boring.
  17. Yeah there were actually 2 concerts in 2 days, Roger Waters on Friday, Brad Paisley on Saturday, and then the Cubs played at Wrigley on Tuesday. It was bound to be terrible but I was still surprised at how bad it was.
  18. I would think you have to have a selection committee with a 4 team playoff, however fallible it will be. Otherwise how can you do it to ensure that a high majority of the time no blatently obvious playoff team is left off? I dunno, I could be completely offbase on this, but how would an automatic selection system address conference winners vs. non-conference winners, or non-BCS conference undefeated teams, or a 2 loss team in the SEC vs. a 1 loss team in the ACC, etc. What would be the other scenarios anyways? Maybe 3 BCS conference winners and a committee selected wild card? What if the 3 conference winners are 11-2 Wisconsin, 13-0 LSU, 12-1 Oklahoma and the 4th spot is between 11-1 Alabama and 12-0 (with lets say wins over Michigan State, TCU and Utah) Boise State? Wouldn't the same crap that happened before occurr, with Alabama getting the nod. I realize there's always going to be controversey around that 5th team, but I would hope this system would at least partially eliminate undefeated non-BCS schools with decent schedules not getting a chance to play for the national title. Of course there is probably an obvious way to do this that I'm just not thinking of, making the whole post moot.
  19. Not bad for your 4th post in June
  20. Because Rizzo is going to hit 1.000 with a guy on third with less than 2 outs? I meant to separate the statements. It'll be exciting just to see how he does in the lineup and we can probably have a little more hope in those types of situations with him in there. Regardless how bad the team is, it's going to be fun to watch him. I know you weren't trying to say this, but I get the feeling that meatball Cubs fans are going to expect Rizzo to come out and have a 1.000 OPS and lead the offense to a resurgence and if he does anything less he's going to take flack and be considered a disappointment. The expectations for this kid have to be sky high.
  21. Only 30,000 or so at the game last night, lowest attended game in Cubs-Sox history. Looking online there are plenty of seats available for this one too. Sad that I'm too lazy to travel to the South Side
  22. Win this one for the BP Cup! Oh wait nevermind the tiebreaker is whoever won last year. Pretty stupid, but its a pretty stupid "award" anyways.
  23. 3-2 on all 3 hitters, that's my marmol
  24. lmao at Campanas reaction on the replay as he's running by Castro. "Wooooahh!!"
