    It wasn't really reporting as much as it was his guess of how things will shake out at the end of camp. Still a genuinely stupid theory though. He was basically saying that Williams has been terrible at camp, and not much better at RG last year. I actually wonder about that. Pretty much every other source besides Football Outsiders thinks that Williams was mediocre at best last year, while FO thinks that he was one of the best guards in football last year until his injury. I would generally trust FO's data over anyone else's, but when everyone else is leaning one direction (not just beat writers and lesser football minds), it makes me wonder.

    Valbuena has gotten 2 walks against possibly the best lefty in baseball and made a few good defensive plays. What odd timing on this rant. Just a random observation upon tuning in. Giving a guy like Cardenas as much time as possible to get an idea what we have in him or if it's even worth keeping him rostered next year is more important than giving Valbuena a pat on the back for a pair of walks that boosted his OPS past the .600 mark. As was mentioned, Cardenas isn't good defensively. He shouldn't be an option for anything besides utility guy (ditto Valbuena). Neither is a good option, even for a second tier team. Cardenas was picked up for his bat with the hopes that he could improve on his defense. Really, if there's nowhere to put him on the field he may as well be in Iowa, with Vitters at 3rd. At this point in the season there's no reason for someone like Valbuena to be playing everyday. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you've got two guys like that, the one with the higher offensive ceiling should be getting the most PT. You are completely disregarding the value of defense.     Depends on how badly they lose. If they manage to keep it within 2 scores, I'd imagine they will fall to around the 10-13 range. If they get destroyed, probably somewhere around 18-20. or maybe we can even win

    Nah, I understand the thought process, but Dempster generally loved Chicago and the Cubs, I don't think any of that was fake. Good for him to do that.

    I don't think Theo/Jed should take it personally. The Dodgers simply gambled that Dempster only wanted to go to LA and wouldn't open up his list of teams. If they had desperately needed a SP, they might have relented and offered something better, but obviously they were happy to take the gamble that they could get Dempster for a bag of balls. If the Dodgers truely believed they had to have a SP, they would have had something worked out or in the works as a backup option. Where did I say Theo or Jed should take it personally? Nor did I say that they should not do business with them. I just said that I wouldn't waste time listening to them unless they come in with a serious offer to start negotiations. Sorry I must have misread what you were trying to say. I thought you were implying Theo and Jed should be angry at the Dodgers for offering nothing for Demp. My point stands though, every trade discussion is different. The Dodgers apparently didn't want/need a SP enough to cave and offer something good for Demp. They thought they could use the leverage they thought they had and steal him from the Cubs. I wouldnt ignore them if they started out with a lowball offer again. Now if it became a repeated pattern then yeah, [expletive] off.

    Weird, I heard the opposite about him. Someone broke down his play last year (Hub?) and noted that he had 15 QB hits last year, which by itself is a rather mediocre number. Then you account for the fact that he had 7 QB hits in week 1 against Atlanta, and you get 8 QB hits the last 15 games of the season, slightly more than 1 every other game. Also he said all 7 of his sacks came in 4 games, but whatever, that doesn't matter as much to me. I think he is an inconsistent pass rusher at best, especially when you account for the lack of attention he gets rushing on the same line as Peppers.

    good piece. That's just not true. Hmmm....3/7ths of it might I was going to try to make an argument that the front 7 could be good for the scheme, but that's not the case either. Urlacher fits/fit the scheme great as a MLB that could both drop back into deep coverage and play the run (or rarely rush the passer) if needed. Peppers will fit every scheme, same with Briggs for the most part. There is no true three technique guy on the line, which I understand to be one of the most important things to have for Lovie's Cover 2 scheme. I don't see anyone on the roster that seems capable of filling that role either. The other DL's can play the run pretty well (talking Izzy, Melton, etc), but obviously there won't be enough pass rush unless someone like Paea or Wootten step up. No pass rush means LB's need to cover more ground and safeties need to make the right decisions every time so there are not blown assignments leading to wide open WRs. Also, I am by no means a football strategy savant so if any of that sounds wrong, feel free to call me out, but after almost 9 years of watching this defense, that's what I understand of it.

    Yeah that thing was stupid back in the day when the leagues still had their own presidents and never played each other until the world series, but at least it made a little sense. It's even dumber now. Edit: On further thought, I guess it makes sense for league leaders and league awards purposes. But when Geovany Soto comes up to bad for the Rangers the first time, as much as he'd like to hide his .199 BA, the Rangers TV network should not display .000 0 HR 0 RBI .000 OPS and pretend this is his first AB all season.

    From an old-fashioned statistical model, his season is shaping up to look great. On pace for .285 17 HR 82 RBI 13 3B 25 SB from a 22 year old SS. So at least the Joe Morgans of the world will think he's having an awesome season offensively.

    I dunno it didnt seem to be that hard to find solid starting performances on this team that wasn't built to be anything but awful. It's possible that Garza, Shark and Wood will all be back. Shark and Garza should be solid most nights. Wood could go either way, if he is decent now you just have to find next year's Maholm and you are in good shape. Probably won't find someone out there that will put up a sub-3 ERA 2/3rds of the way through the season like Dempster did but I don't know if that's necessary to field a .500 team. I would think that the rotation that the Cubs have been trotting that out there this year is good enough to make the playoffs with a solid offense and pen.

    God I hope not. If team is still this bad in year 6 and the farm system wasn't about to bust with ML ready guys, Theo and Co would probably be forced out and a new guy would come in and his plan would probably involve more spending (if possible, I know you are the leader of the Cubs won't be able to spend like a big market team of we suck too long band).

    This Lions thread is fun to read. Thanks for the link. Not sure if this guy was intentionally being a homer, or really thinks this, but I wouldnt put it past a Lions fan... If I put on my "trying to be unbiased" Bears tinted glasses: QB - Bears OL - Lions WR - Split/slight adv Lions RB - Bears TE - Lions DL - Lions LB - Bears CB - Bears S - Lions ST - Bears Coach - Split/slight adv Bears (not just X&O's evaluation) Team more likely to have a stater in jail at gametime - Lions Team more likely to have a player stomp on the face of another and claim he was catching his balance - Lions Bears.

Hinrich was still in college Boozer was still in college Deng was in high school Robinson was in high school Noah was still in high school Gibson was still in high school Bellineli was overseas probably in the equivalent of high school Butler was in grade school Teague was in grade school Also, JVG said the Bulls will be lucky to make the playoffs this year. Radmanovic and Mohammed were both NBA scrubs/bench players
