  1. Looking at the NL so far this offseason: Padres - Better Dodgers - Better Giants - Worse/Same Rockies/Diamondbacks - doesn't matter Cardinals - Better Cubs - Better Reds - Same Pirates - Same Brewers - Same Braves - Worse Mets - Same Nats - Same Marlins - Better Phillies - doesn't matter If you assume (big assumption in December) the Dodgers, Cardinals and Nats are favorites for the divisions, that leaves the Padres, Cubs, Pirates, Marlins and Giants fighting for WCs. Maybe the Brewers, Reds and Mets with an outside shot. I guess if I wasn't a homer, the Cubs might be closer to that outside shot group. Just thinking outloud, I expect to be challenged on half of this.
  2. Chicago media has been awesomely brutal towards the Bears
  3. Noah had surgery during the offseason, and the thought was that he'd be ok for the season, but it was acknowledged that it's still a problem, and he's going to be having to fight it all season. Apparently there's swelling after games...it's going to be a rough season for him. EDIT: All that said, Thibs says they're more worried about his ankle right now than his knee. I think it was Cowley who in the preseason said his knee was bone on bone and would be a problem the rest of this season if not his career. Cowley is kind of a hack so I didn't really believe that, and I probably still don't but it's definitely something I keep coming back to when I see Noah struggle. If last year was peak Noah, it sucks that it had to come in a meaningless season. Edit: This was from a RealGM thread in October: http://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1352130
  4. RIP to the end of Derrick Rose's consecutive games streak at 12. Even Iron Men succumb to humanity eventually.
  5. Come on, don't have revisionist history. Lovie is not an elite coach but he's not bad. He provided stability and leadership* and his players seemed to always play hard for him and loved playing for him. There were no instances of inmates running the asylum in Lovie's tenure, there were no situations where a live ball lay on the ground while his players were walking off the field, there were no situations where one of his assistants bad mouthed a player to the media anonymously and then allowed that coach to stay on. Did Lovie have significant flaws? Yes, definitely. Did he deserve to move on after 2012? Yeah, probably. But I don't think its fair to say he's not a good coach. *Although its clear that the Bears had strong leadership on both offense and defense in the form of Kreutz and Urlacher which certainly helped him maintain control in the locker room.
  6. I can't believe Clausen is starting for us....the only QB that Todd Collins was able to beat in a Bears uniform. Clausen finished with a 29.7 rating in that game, Collins 6.3
  7. What is everyone's favorite Trestman cliche? *.....and that starts with me *We had a great week of practice *Any explanation of anything that involves the word "process" Any others?
  8. LOL Cutty is the Aaron Rodgers of press conferences
  9. I think whether Cutler wanted to take the high road or not, he knew that this was the best way to go about it, considering how the media is spewing venom at Emery and Trestman. Now Cutler is made into a sympathetic figure instead of the surley guy he's normally portrayed as.
  10. Again, things just keep getting crazier.
  11. Jesus. Every decision they make is worse than the last
  12. He's looked worse at times this year, but not at all times. I think last game was clearly his worst and I believe that was a throw in the towel game in response to the coaching debacle. It's disappointing and partially justifies the complaints about his attitude, but not the norm. This is pure speculation and probably not true, but I read someone suggest that Cutler is being benched for insubordination (among other things). Why? Remember midway through the 4th with the Bears down 24-8, still only down 2 scores the Bears started out a drive with back to back runs, confusing everyone. Did Trestman throw in the towel? The (unfounded) speculation is that Cutler, in an F you response to the Kromer situation actually checked in to running plays 2 times in a row.
  13. Why didn't Trestman announce the change during his P.C? Unless the call to bench Cutler came straight from the top?? I don't know...there are so many unanswered questions about this team, particularly the last 2 weeks. I wish someone could get to the bottom of everything and write a book someday.
  14. Ben Finfer is steaming mad
  15. But even then, there was no guarantee Rodgers was going to turn into anything. He sat on the bench for 3 years while Favre rapidly deteriorated before he got his shot. Tom Brady was a 6th round pick, and had to wait for Bledsoe to get hurt before he was forced into action. For every Rodgers there's 10 Grossmans out there who get picked in the first round and crap out. I might be wrong but I don't think there is any talent evaluator out there that is significantly better than the others at recognizing franchise QB talent beyond the obvious guys which are few and far between and almost always number 1 picks.
  16. Get lucky is right. I feel like finding a legit franchise QB is a complete and utter crapshoot. Even if you draft a close to sure thing like Manning or Luck, you have to be fortunate enough to be the worst team in football in a year they are available. So yeah this is what we might be back to...the crapshoot search for our franchise QB.
  17. Welcome to the Trestman regime Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? But Kaplan and his sycophants were crowing about how the other players must appreciate that there's finally some accountability! How many defensive players have been benched due to poor play? To be fair we are really exhausting the depth chart at LB and in the secondary. I think Shea is the only Week 1 starter that you can say should be benched. There's really no other options at Safety and CB (plus you want Fuller to keep getting reps).
  18. Pete Prisco is sounding so dumb on twitter saying this is the dumbest move ever. I'm not saying it is or isn't but he's defending that by pointing out Cutlers TD passes and completion %.
  19. Alex Smith is a tough comparison because he was younger, with a relatively cheap contract (I think?) and was coming off a season where he had a 104 QBR (albeit was benched halfway through the year) Does anyone in the NFL still think at age 32 they can harness Cutler's talent? Maybe? I guess all it takes is one team with a bad QB situation and a coach that needs to win now to gamble on Cutler.
  20. Emery knows he can't get rid of both Trestman and Cutler without losing his job too Exactly. If he cuts Cutler and fires the coaching staff he's basically throwing away like $20-25m of the bears money next year and getting nothing in return. In addition there is a $15m hole in your salary cap next year making it hard to turn around quickly. You can suck at your job but if you cost the mccaskeys millions of dollars you might be getting fired.
  21. So it looks increasingly possible we are back to where we were from the 50s-2008....how do we get a franchise QB? Outside of the 2QBs at the top is there anyone else worthy of drafting? Obviously they don't believe Fales is the guy or if he is they don't think he's ready Clausen cannot go into next year as our starting QB can he?
  22. I doubt this I don't doubt Marc might be trying to prove it. I hope it works in an odd way some other team gets duped by him. Gotta keep the competition down. Crap I totally misread that. I read it as the Bears FO was trying to show that Trestman wasn't to blame so they can retain Trestman
  23. Could the bears just say they don't want cutler to play in meaningless games so they are seeing what they have in Claussen? I could see the bears spinning this so that it doesn't look like they are giving up on Cutler. Or obviously if they let Trestman and maybe Emery go they can say they didn't support benching him. I think it would be a bad idea to just cut cutler after the season. Doesn't help us at all next season unless they are just going to punt it and go through a rebuilding year.
